New Search Blogs From Women

I've written before about how there are many women are involved in search and search marketing, but blogrolls like ours can still feel man heavy. Fortunately, there are some new blogs up from women in search, including Google Webmaster Central's Vanessa Fox. Here's a round-up.

Let's start with Google, and some background on other personal blogs by those who work with webmasters. To date, that's been the men. Back in August 2005, Google search quality czar Matt Cutts launched his own blog (still currently down for April Fool's), which soon turned into a resource for those wanting to know more about Google. Matt does write about non-Google issues, but there's plenty about Google to make his blog required reading.

Adam Lasnik had joined Google in 2005 to work with Matt on webmaster relations, giving webmasters another blog to watch -- Adam's own. Adam doesn't actually blog much about Google issues there, however. Instead, you're more likely to hear him interacting at places like WebmasterWorld or Google Webmaster Help at Google Groups.

Enough of Google men. Like Adam, Vanessa Fox deals with webmaster relations for Google. She oversees Google Webmaster Central and has been blogging plenty at the old Inside Google Sitemaps blog, which became the Google Webmaster Central blog. Now she's launched her own personal blog, which so far remains Google free.

Her domain name, well -- it'll raise some eyebrows. Some backstory here. There's another Vanessa Fox on the web that apparently works in the adult industry. This came to light when Dave Naylor discovered after doing a post mentioning Goggle Vanessa that he got traffic for her name and, well, something adult related. If you go to vanessafox.com, it will NOT be the Google Vanessa's blog. Since she can't have her name, as a joke, she's picked up a domain name the other Vanessa might want. Plus, it gives Dave Naylor a chuckle.

Speaking of having your own name, search marketer Jennifer Slegg has run her own blog about contextual ads at JenSense since November 2004. Now she's got a new one under her actual name, JenniferSlegg.com, where she plans to write on SEO and online marketing and content development.

Another new blog is from Alchemist Media, which is Jessie Stricchiola's company. I'm not sure if Jessie's doing all the posts on the Alchemist Blog, but it's one you might want to watch.

Rae Hoffman's Sugarrae blog isn't new. In fact, it has just turned a year old. But somehow, it slipped past me. So being new to me, I roll it into today's post on new blogs on search by women! Plenty of good reading on it, including her recent Five Link Development Experts: A Group Interview post.

More blogs from women? I ran down our blogroll to pull out those either run by women, from companies owned by woman, or where women tend to do a significant amount of the blogging:

Need names and backgrounds of women associated with these blogs, or even more search and marketing blogs from women? Li Evans has a continuing series on Women Of Internet Marketing that you should check out. It's now into part 15.

By the way, a note on our blogroll at Search Engine Land. I get a lot of requests to be on it. Here's the deal. I tend to list things we read at Search Engine Land, and we can't read everything. I also rarely list a brand new blog, because I like to see them develop into solid resources before I take the time to add a link. The very best way to get on it if you're consistently writing content of substance. If so, then it's a natural fit. It's also something I notice, so you'll likely get a link without even asking.

Sorry I can't list everyone, but my primary job is to write about search news, not ensure the world's most comprehensive list of search blogs. You want that -- you want Lee Odden's Search Marketing Blogs list, now coming up on 400 blogs.

One last tip. I remain amazed at the number of requests I get for blogroll links where the person asking either doesn't have a blogroll themselves or has one but doesn't list Search Engine Land. I will and do list people regardless of a backlink. But it's only polite, you know? Link onto others as you would have them link onto you.

Looks like you forgot Donna Fontenot in SEO Scoop (http://www.seo-scoop.com/)...
By the way, isn't it some kind of sexism to make a special post to say that women too own blogs?

*ahem* :)

I forgot to say. I know I'm going to be missing people, so feel free to add further links. And sorry, Gurtie -- yep, Gray Hat is on the blogroll, so I'll update to the above in a bit.

Sexist to do a special post about blogs by women in search? I suppose some could argue that. But I think women in the industry might be interested in knowing where other women are blogging. Men might want to see what other men are blogging -- but the point is, it's pretty easy to come across blogs run by men. So I think it's worth some attention.

I wanted to mention two more women bloggers -Debra Mastaler http://thelinkspiel.blogspot.com and Amanda Watlington http://amandawatlington.typepad.com. Debra blogs heavily about linkbuilding and Amanda blogs on blogging and happenings on the Internet.

A side note, Debra shamed me into starting a blog recently at http://www.semclubhouse.com/ , so I guess I'd be a third lady blogger to add. :-)

Oh, and Danny, thanks for giving special recognition to lady bloggers.

Thanks for the mention Danny! :)

BTW - those who are looking for all the women i've interviewed at SMG, there's a great resource I've pulled together. Its a list that contains each woman and links to their interview. Within that interview there's usually a link to their blog and also their own websites.

The trouble with posts like this is those who are left out, such as my blog, wonder why and then those SM blogs that are male owned/run that do have women contributors, such as SERoundtable (Barry has two women on his team) are not included. Suffice it to say the list is actually larger...with new ones coming on board, such as Christine Churchill's blog.
I had blogged about women in tech with blogs and it was fun to see them come piling out. If I could put in a word for them, there is Kalena Jordan and Sophie Wegat in Australia who have SEO oriented blogs.

Hi Danny,
I enjoyed this post. The SEOigloo blog is run by me...a lady! And...I have Search Engine Land in my blog roll.

My blog deals primarily with small business SEO and web design issues. We've only been blogging since 2006, and are working hard on making our blog a better resource all the time. Just thought I'd say hello.
Kind Regards,
Miriam

I know it's not perfect. But neither was it every posted as a comprehensive list, Kim. I wanted to mention a few new ones and point some attention to the work Li's done with interviews, plus I knew people would contribute more.

The problem with ANY list is that some people get left out, regardless of sex. I'm confused about you saying you're left out, however. Cre8tive Flow is mentioned in ths post, and it along with Cre8asite is on our blog roll. Kalena's mentioned up there in this post as well.

Anyway, like I said -- it's not perfect, and I appreciate the comments from everyone along with links and pointers to more.

Danny, thanks and I understand...Cre8tive Flow is the Cre8asiteforums blog. It has a woman blog editor (not me), and blog posts are by moderators and guest members. The biggest poster is Bill Slawski, so I doubt it fits your women's blog list, LOL

My blog is Cre8pc SEO and Usability and never made the blogroll properly because I think it was confused with the forums blog. Li followed you up with a post today that lists The List.

It's fun to see the new talent popping up, like Rebecca, Lisa, Tamar and Liana and of course, SEOFanGirl :)

hi,
seems in coming days women would be having more blogs than men, great thought. keep it up.

see ya,
mohit

Wow, you sure give good traffic Danny. Thanks for the blog backslap and thanks Kim for the blog love, it's mutual I assure you! We may not wear yellow shoes but we can still blog with the best of em.
