eBay Restarts AdWords Campaigns With New Outlook

EBay to resume ads on Google, but rely on rivals from Reuters reports that eBay has resumed advertising through AdWords on Google but on a more limited basis than in the past.

eBay spokesperson Hani Durzy said:

I will tell you it will be in a much more limited way than it was before....What we found is that we were not as dependent on AdWords as some people thought.

This backs Bill Tancer of Hitwise's data, where he shows that although eBay lost Google traffic, overall traffic levels stayed strong.

eBay Pulls Google AdWords Ads To Protest Google Checkout Moves from us covers the background of the eBay boycott, which the company billed as an "experiment."

I added at Search Engine Roundtable that some advertisers and searchers are happy and delighted that they may not be seeing eBay ads for so many queries at Google. eBay has been known to bid on pretty much any type of search, even keywords like "used kleenex" and other funny types of ads.

eBay said it will now be placing more ads on Yahoo, Microsoft, Ask and AOL's ad systems.

I cant imagine how Ebay justified spending zillions (okay maybe not zillions) of dollars on AdWords for the dumbest searches imaginable. I would search for my name and find out I'm for sale on Ebay - interesting - My non-computer-savvy husband was alarmed - until I explained Adsense for about 2 minutes and he said "nevermind."

Cant say I'm sad to see the weird Ebay ads go - it'll make Google a nicer place to search
