Search Engine Land News
=============================
What a year -- our first year, here at Search Engine Land! We turned one yesterday, and our Search Engine Land Celebrates Its First Birthday! post gives thanks to our readers, writers, editors, and others who've helped make the past year so successful. The post also covers some stats on how we've grown.
We've also grown with new staff. Welcome, New Search Engine Land Editors! introduces you to our new features editor, Vanessa Fox; Rob Kerry, editor of our Sphinn forums; Rebecca Kelley, our copy editor, and Greg Sterling, who recently gained the title of contributing editor.
You're reading Search Month, our newsletter that recaps an entire month's worth of search news. Search Engine Land also publishes SearchCap, a daily newsletter recapping the day's events in search. Recently, Andrew Girdwood did an in-depth look at how that newsletter compiles the best of nearly 500 sources of search news. An Inside Look At Our Daily SearchCap has more details, so check it out!
Many of the SearchCap sources are listed on the Search Engine Land blogroll. Last month, that massive list of search-related blogs underwent a major change, shifting from an alphabetical order to one where blogs are categorized by subject. Search Engine Land's Blogroll, Sliced, Diced, & Categorized covers the change plus explains some new ways to see search news from important blogs at a glance.
In particular, the links below will put the top headlines from Search Engine Land along with several other major search news resources into popular home page services. Try them out!

Our SMX conference series has come to an end for 2007, with our last shows of the year held in Orlando and London in November. You can read more about the buzz and learning that went on via the posts below:
SMX shows for 2007 may have concluded, but SMX in 2008 will start big and strong with our SMX West event. This is our must-attend three day search marketing conference especially designed for beginning and intermediate search marketers, though there's plenty for experts to learn, as well.
Over the coming weeks, we'll be telling you more about all that we have planned at SMX West in more depth. But for more now, the posts below cover our current call for speakers, an overview of the show, and an in-depth look at what Search 3.0 is all about. We will have an entire track at SMX West that covers Search 3.0, the blended search results that hit all the major search engines this year.

Top 10 Most Popular Stories: November 2007
=======================================
1) Google Maps Adds Terrain View, Replaces Hybrid View - If you load up Google Maps, you may notice that they have removed the "Hybrid" button and replaced it with "Terrain" and a simulated view of cities or terrain. Here is a live frame of the Google Terrain view of New York City 10010.

2) It’s The (Other) Algorithm, Stupid! Understanding DiggRank - Have you ever wondered what it really takes for a story submitted to Digg to get to the home page? Or why a certain story—even a really good, social media friendly story—never got to the home page? I'm frequently asked the question, "Hey, my story has [number] of Diggs but it still hasn't been promoted to the home page. Any idea what's wrong?" And, relatively less frequently, I hear someone saying in amazement, "Wow, all it took was 29 Diggs and that story rocketed to the home page!" I'm always tempted to reply "It's the algorithm, stupid!" Digg has an algorithm? Yes, just as PageRank and other algorithms are used to rank web pages by search engines, some social sites use algorithms to determine which stories become popular. Call it DiggRank, if you will. Let’s take a deeper look at what the Digg algorithm is and venture a few guesses about how it works.

3) The Social Media Manual: Read Before You Play - I get so many questions from people about Digg, Propeller, Reddit, Stumbleupon, and other social news sites every day that I decided to write this little "manual" as something to read before you jump in head first into any social site, and to keep by your side as you progress through the ranks. It should not only help you succeed with your social media marketing efforts, but also help you avoid some of the mistakes I've made.

4) Wife Googles Husband, Discovers He Kept Lottery Win A Secret - Miami woman sues missing husband for share of lottery win from the AP reports a husband was keeping a huge secret from his wife. The secret? He won $19 million in the Florida lottery jackpot! Donna Campbell is now suing her husband for half of his winnings, which turned out to be $600,000 after he had to split his winning with the group he bought the ticket with, who opted for the lump-sum payment of $10.2 million.

5) How To (Kind Of) Buy A #1 Organic Search Ranking On Google - Google adamantly denies that payment influences organic search engine rankings. In an ideal world that might be true, but exposure begets exposure. Here are some of the cheapest and fastest ways to get your message to the top of the search results without paying for every click.
===================
6) Forget Black Friday! Are You Ready For Holiday Season's Cyber Mondays? - "Black Friday," the day after Thanksgiving, is the biggest shopping day of the year for U.S. brick-and-mortar retailers. But, for each Monday after Black Friday, consumer searches spike up on the internet and online retail websites enjoy their highest traffic and associated sales of the year. Search engine use is directly impacting businesses during this period, and companies which haven't optimized their internet presence stand to lose out on some of the sales they could be getting if consumers could find them. This is true for online businesses as well as for brick-and-mortar stores. While savvy companies planned for this season all the way back in the summer, and already have their internet storefronts in order, it's not too late to do a few more things to insure a business can squeeze out more from gift shoppers on the "Cyber Mondays" following Black Friday.

7) Google's Larry Page To Marry Lucy Southworth On December 8th - Now the other Google founder is planning a secret wedding from SFGate.com reports Google's co-founder, Larry Page, is going to marry his long time girlfriend, Lucy Southworth. The wedding is scheduled for the weekend of December 8th. The location is unknown at this moment, since Page is keeping the wedding details secretive. Expected to attend the wedding include both former and current Googlers, plus famous names like Richard Branson of Virgin, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, and Al Gore is expected to do a live video conference during the wedding.

8) How To Maximize Your Exposure In Google - It's been a while since I've looked at Google's page titled How to submit your content to Google. On first glance, it would be easy to assume this page represents all your options for submission and link seeking. The page includes the sections:

9) San Francisco Oil Spill Maps & Wishing For Better Community Map Search Tools - Trying to figure out the impact of last week's oil spill in San Francisco Bay, which happened after the container ship Cosco Busan hit the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge? There are maps to the rescue! Links to them below, along with some observations on the difficulty in finding community-built maps like these in Google Maps.

10) Effective Tagging For Both Usability & SEO - In this era of Web 2.0, it seems that blogs, mash-ups, RSS feeds, and wikis have been the buzzwords occupying most of the limelight. But personally, tagging is the Web 2.0 technology that excites me the most, because of its versatility and wide applicability. A tag, according to Wikipedia, is "a (relevant) keyword or term associated with or assigned to a piece of information (e.g. a picture, article, or video clip), thus describing the item and enabling keyword-based classification of information." More simply put (with due credit to Flickr.com): tags are like keyword or category labels, and they can help visitors find items which have something in common.

Communication Breakdown: 5 Avoidable Failures That Derail Search Marketing Campaigns - Last week I had occasion to visit with a B2B prospect. Halfway through our meeting they voiced concern about their ability to uphold their end of the SEO partnership. Naturally, soon thereafter we were engaged in a spirited discussion on the main reasons B2B campaigns fail. As it turns out, they were already familiar with how both lack of implementation and lack of measurement can contribute to campaign failure. However, they were genuinely surprised to learn that lack of communication between internal teams can play a huge role in determining whether a campaign succeeds or fails. See also:

Google AdSense: When A Click No Longer Counts As A Click - Google is changing what constitutes a click on an AdSense ad. In the past, a click on the URL, title, or background of the ad would trigger a click and earn an AdSense publisher money. In the future, a click on the background of the ad will no longer trigger a click event and an AdSense publisher will not make money. In short, a click occurs only if a user clicks on the title or URL of the AdSense ad. See also:

Internet Yellow Pages: Worth The Effort? - It's painfully obvious that the local search advertising market remains highly fragmented. Numerous local search experts attending the recent SMX Local & Mobile conference reiterated the observation that businesses seeking to target local audiences have a plethora of options, and identifying and selecting the right locally-focused sites can be an overwhelming task for small business people who have limited time to devote to the task. The Mobile Internet: Still Years Away? - The New York Times ran a kind of overview article this weekend about the mobile Web and the fact that it may still be far off as a practical matter. The article has a somewhat bearish tone and point of view and argues that the mobile Internet is still years away as a mainstream phenomenon. Do you agree? To see, I've created a quick survey on mobile Internet habits. Depending on the level of response, we'll write about the results in a future column. It takes only about two minutes to complete. Optimizing Bids By Day & Time Can Dramatically Increase Your ROI - Consumer behavior changes based on the day and time an individual is searching. It's common to see conversion rates increase for dating sites in the early to late evening, while service-based industries often see a decline in conversion rates during those times. Adjusting your bids by time of day or day of the week can be quite useful for optimizing your campaigns for a lower cost per action. See also:

Search 3.0: The Blended & Vertical Search Revolution - This has been a remarkable year. After years of no real dramatic evolution in search, the third generation finally arrived. Google calls it Universal Search, and I've been tending to say "blended search" as a generic name for the change that's now hit all the major search engines. But in doing the agenda for our upcoming SMX West conference, a better term for what's going on finally clicked: Search 3.0. In this article, I'll cover the why and what of Search 3.0, taking in Search 1.0 and 2.0 along the way and touch on how Search 4.0 -- personal and social refinement -- is on the way. See also:

Online Advertising Continues To Grow: Q3 Worth $5.2 Billion - Online ad revenues recorded 25 percent year-over-year growth for a $5.2 billion dollar performance in the third quarter, according to the IAB. The first nine months of the year generated $15.2 billion in online advertising. Paid search represents a steady 41 percent of revenues. See also:

Search Marketing Tactics
===========================
Are Your Customers Looking For A Problem? Solutions Are Search Marketing! - The main problem with marketing is it's too much marketing and not enough problem—your customer's problem. Too often, we focus on our product instead of what our customer needs. Instead of trumpeting how great our products are, the Internet rewards companies that let their customers come to them. And just how do you let your customers come to you? Search marketing is a good place to start. Some of the most successful search marketers know how to focus on the customer's problem to allow customers to come to them. See also:

Inbox 2.0: Vision And Perhaps Confusion At Google And Yahoo - A much discussed blog posting this morning comes from Saul Hansell at the New York Times, who spoke to both Google and Yahoo about their plans to turn their email products into social networks, in a manner of speaking: "Inbox 2.0." The plans discussed in the post suggest some clever and creative thinking about how both companies can leverage their existing products and integrate them with other properties. But people at both companies also seem to be in a kind of frenzy, which may turn out to be unjustified in the long run, over how to compete with Facebook. See also:
