Soovle.com is a great site/tool too. I often use it (amongst others) for developing keyword lists, but it is brilliant for identifying negatives! Just drag and drop into the Saved Suggestions (Book Icon) and they are ready to download.

I like keeping an eye on my Google Analytics to see if search behavior is changing. The way people search is bound to change every year and there might be some gems lurking in your Analytics that you can capitalize on before your competition even notices there’s a shift going on.

I’m relatively new to SEO. What information would I be extracting by using your tip: [your niche]+most popular posts of 2012+traffic. Let’s say I type in that query, with a relevant industry … then what? I’m trying to get as much out of your article as I can. Thanks a lot.

Wonderful idea, Ian. Never thought of it for negatives that way. Thanks for posting!

    Hi Russell,

By using the query [your niche]+most popular posts of 2012+traffic you would be finding the posts that proved the most traffic for your competitors. In the article I used the law niche to find a number of content creation ideas which would likely bring in a large amount of traffic.

I mainly rely on Google Keyword tool and I find it to be sufficient for my needs. I have tries Wordtracker’s free system too but did not upgrade to the paid version for cost reasons. Another way is to use Alexa.
