Is the contest still live? http://www.bingiton.com redirects to bing.com for me in Canada.

There’s no doubt Google results suck these days but it still does not mean that Bing is any better.

Would Bing’s marketshare be at an all-time high if it weren’t the search default on IE and IE the default browser on Windows? Don’t get me wrong, I really like a lot of the things Bing is doing, but with PC’s lead over Mac purchases at the lowest levels since the 90s, and rapid mobile growth where Bing has very tiny search share they still have a big battle ahead of them.

    No, it’s over.

  • Durant Imboden

Even if the study is an accurate predictor of behavior, a “Bing It On” challenge won’t have much impact unless Bing can get people to try its Pepsi to Google’s Coke. How many people are willing to take the time?

  • Sandeep Gupta

I tried the challenge over 50 times using the search terms from past (Google Search History) and logged in as anonymous – the results of Google were always better. Keep crying – Bing Is Not Google.

  • ChaseVenters

I tried their challenge. Google won three, the other two were a draw.

  • Nathan Taylor

I think it’s only available in certain locales. I am able to access it at http://www.bingiton.com.

  • Nathan Taylor

Played twice, Google won both times. The thing is, for the search terms the challenge suggests it does perform better than Google in some identifiable ways- which is why Bing offers those suggestions. Unfortunately, for obscure or abstract searches like technical subjects, Google seems to always out perform Bing.

For the first time bing gave better search result for me last week…

I generally do not cross check with Bing, but for one search, Google results were exceptionally bad.

I think Google lost, owing to its ‘freshness’ update. The search term I entered had nothing to do with time.

Yeah it still works but only for certain countries now, for example it no longer works here in the UK, we get the same redirect to bing.com but… you can still access bingiton.com via proxies such as kproxy.com for those locations that redirect to bing’s home page :)

Yeah I had a similar out come when I tried it when the site first launched. In my first set of keywords Google won 4 and bing won 1, then on my second set of keyword google won 3 and bing won 2.

But the only problem is that its not hard to tell which results are which, so people in the “google habit” as bing are calling it will know what they are looking at and the same should go for those using bing.

Surely this would make the test results incorrect if people don’t pick the best results but rather pick the results they know are googles as best and bings as worst, and vica versa.

  • Jenksy

Any and all regular visitors to SEL (including myself) are undoubtedly the worst set of people to draw any sort of conclusions from regarding the Bing It On challenge. I knew which engine was which within a nanosecond of each new page of the test appearing. In short, bias and expectancy effect were/are surely at play for all of us.

That being said, being aware of that bias and expectancy effect, at least in theory, means one can get ’round it. When I took the challenge Google did better when I asked questions and searched long tails. Bing did better or as well, otherwise. In the end it was a draw each time I took the challenge.

Now, Microsoft needs put a couple million into a TV campaign for Bing that increases awareness of the challenge. As I recall, they were supposed to launch a TV campaign, but I haven’t seen a a single ad. So, if their aim is to change the habits of your every day web surfer, it seems they’re kind of doing a piss-poor job of it.

I found that my results were marginally better for the real estate niche on Bing, but I still find myself using Google more simply because old habits are hard to break. I’m going to change the default search engine in Chrome right now to Bing for a week and see how I like it. :-)

  • Eric Canales

When I search with Bing I realize I haven’t yet corrected my default search engine at work :(

  • chris lipsit

I’m no statistician but 4,700 people surveyed by volunteering is hardly statistically relevant?

Even if Bing has a short term bump, it is all for not. Google’s users select Google not just because of the accurate results. Google search is now part of a solid ecosystem of devices with business and personal social apps, services and communications tools. Google engages users at their work, in their home and on the road. Google+, Google Places, Google Local, Andriod, and of course Google.com… and Bing has…Yahoo!Bing search with Facebook logins, Hotmail and Windows 8 Mobile? Sorry to sound harsh, but Microsoft has yet to even figure out what their official brand name is nor how to create a single login for all of their online services. If winning the marketing game was about quality only, McDonald’s would not be the worlds largest seller of burgers, its about making a well rounded service available to your customers whenever and where ever they want you.

I’m not a statistician either, but I think when they do those “Who’s going to win the presidential election?” polls, they survey less than 4,700 people. :-)

I played it twice. The second time I compared the ‘Bing It on’ results with the search results in Google and Bing (for the same query) and both Bing results where always different then the results provided directly by Google and Bing. This made me wonder how Bing it on works, didn’t trust it so I stick with Google.

Google won for me but that isn’t the deciding factor for me. The way Bing is set up sucks. Bing makes me feel crowded to the left because of the grey bar on the right even if it’s minimized, it has less search results per page, Google will put a small section of a Google map to the right on location searches Bing gives no map option to the right or in the results, if you misspell then click on the suggestion it leaves the misspelled word in the search bar which I use Google for because I am a horrible speller and Google’s spell check will give me the right word when other spell checks are way off. ect.ect.ect.

I like google better. It’s clean, simple, and has great results. Bing is cluttered. no thanks.

  • arbus

Reality check. In Sept. 2012 Google brought 1,342 visits to our site. Bing brought 3 visits in that same time frame.

  • pharmassist

played about 10 times to make sure and bing won 7/10 searches for me but the results were pretty much equal and in quality on both sides. i just prefer bing now.

  • alkalitta

i always used google until they no longer let me save my searches .
i hate that damn suggestion crap and you have no option.
i just use whatever works now .
