Bing Improves Image Search With Tabs & Page Preview

As Greg covered earlier, Bing announced a ton of new features today. One of those features is an improved image search.

The first major change is the added tabs for image searches that can have several meanings. Some example searches that would trigger the tabs include [Casablanca], [Apple], [Jaguar] and others. Now Bing has added these tabs at the top to help you refine your query.

In addition, Bing added a preview or live version of the site hosting the image in a frame layer below the image. So if you visit a specific image, you can see the full page it came from. Here is a picture:

Bing made three other big changes to Image Search with the “new” look:

    1. The “More Sizes” link is no longer offered
    2. The “Similar Images” option was also taken away
    3. It is no longer possible to select a particular image using right-mouse and open it in a new tab so you can look at the image of possible interest but come back to the original tab and continue scrolling at will. You have to leave the results page to look at the image and then press Browser back (at which point Bing tries to re-paint the results page as it was but usually doesn`t land you where you had left off).

These are three major drawbacks to Bing Image Search in my books. I don`t understand why Microsoft is going backwards.
