Bing Offers Advice On Google’s Penguin Update: Diversify

Duane Forrester, Senior Product Manager at Microsoft Bing, wrote a blog post on the Bing Search blog named Penguins & Pandas Poetry.

The post is about Google’s latest Penguin update and how SEOs and webmasters need to be better prepared for such updates.

The basic advice is simple, SEOs and webmasters need to do one thing – diversify.

Duane is not just saying, focus on Bing and make sure your site does well there too. Yes, if you lose all your Google traffic, ranking well in Bing is nice but since Bing only has about 30% marketshare, you are still missing out on a lot of traffic.

Duane is also telling you to diversify outside of search. He explains, “Algorithms change. Rankings change. Competition happens.” It does – so look at social media, look at Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest as traffic sources. Look towards email marketing and other forms of offline marketing.

Of course Duane recommends you build the best site in your niche, make yourself an authority and your site should be “future proof.” But in terms of what is important for Google and Bing in the future, Duane says “search is influenced by social today.” What is next? Also, what is the next SEO spam tactic and are you doing it?

So when Bing talks about Google’s latest update, they are not just saying leave Google for Bing – they are saying – be a smarter marketer and think about the future, making the best resource and most importantly – diversify.

Unfortunately, “Advise” in the title should be “Advice.”  Otherwise, an interesting take from Bing’s perspective!

Let’s go Bing!!!! Today, after 2 years, I logged into my Bing Webmaster account, and it was an amazing experience too see how you have improved your tools for webmasters! they are easier to use and more intuitive than the Google Webmasters Tools, and not only that, they are giving $50 for advertising to their users, what a good suprise!…. Bing is doing a great job and is time we stop talking about Google all the f…g time… Google has become EVIL, it is time we give more credit to Bing/Yahoo… their SERPs are also much better than G SERPs these days!  BING, keep doing the good job, we really need a competition for Google, webmasters and people have become stupid just doing its will…. Google is closing the doors to the small publisher, and this is the perfect time for you to show the world you also have a good search engine and tools for webmasters!

I’m sorry for the typo.  I came back to edit it 2 hours later and noticed this comment as well.  I should not have rushed the story without proofing it before publishing.

It is amazing how the sentiment for Bing has changed following the days when Microsoft were seen as the big bad boys on the block.
I am certainly looking to follow such a course from now on.
This is not rocket science, but it is helpful seeing the blatantly obvious spelled out!

What a surprise! BING is giving to all Webmasters 90-Days or $300 for FREE Advertising in Yahoo / Bing! Check it out http://advertising.microsoft.com/small-business/bing-and-get-noticed-online-now

So, basically, “throw in the towel on Google” and take your chances with other forms of marketing, etc.  OK!

Just a heads up folks… both the $50 and $300 offers are intended for new Microsoft Advertising adCenter customers only. If you have a current adCenter account you are not eligible for these promotions (sorry). The $300 is a limited-time offer to those who have received a targeted communication.

But what is the new task for good SEO ?

Duane is saying what others MANY others have said..Eric Ward, Jill Whalen, and others..this is not new.  Good marketers know you need to diversify.  The same sort of discussion came up around the JC Penny link building thing..

Creating a niche website is one of the best ways to make money online but only if it  offers unique content and has specific keywords.
