Today’s Google Crossword puzzle logo may not have made it in time for crossword puzzle fanatics on the East coast to enjoy with their morning coffee, but it’s up now and will keep many cruciverbalists busy for the afternoon.
Celebrating tomorrow’s 100th anniversary of the crossword puzzle, Google’s interactive logo offers players a digital crossword puzzle along with Google+, Facebook and Twitter icons to share the logo and #GoogleCrossword hashtag on their social networks.
Clicking the search icon delivers a results page for “Crossword inventor” with Arthur Wynne at the top of the search list.
Born in 1871 in Liverpool, England, Wynne is known as the inventor of the crossword puzzle. The first crossword puzzle Wynne designed was published in the December 21, 1913 Sunday edition of the New York Word newspaper. According to Smithsonian.com, Wynne originally named his puzzle a “word-cross”, but the name would eventually be changed to “crossword” after a typesetting error.
