Confirmed: Google Search Testing New “Clean” Design: For Tablets Only

google web search Google is testing yet another design, this one is the same gray and black bar look but places the search filters and navigation at the top of the page, instead of on the left. Amit Agarwal posted screen shots of the new design, here are two of the many screen shots he has posted: Agarwal doesn't mention that the new design is only for tablets, but apparently he say it while using his iPad, The Next Web reports. It also cites two others seeing the look on their tablets, hence the idea this might be a tablet-only look. Personally, I am not in favor of moving the search results s [...]

Google Plus One Button Now 3X Faster

Google announced they have now speed up the Google +1 button for websites. The button is now automatically up to 3 times faster and best of all, webmasters do not need to update their code for the speed changes to take affect. The change is automatic. Google said, "no action is required on your part, so just sit back, relax, and watch as the button loads more quickly than before." Is 3X faster not enough? Google has also released a new asynchronous snippet that is even faster. This feature allows your web site to continue loading while your browser downloads the +1 JavaScript. T [...]

Official: Google Panda 2.3 Update Is Live

google-panda-generic-featured Google has confirmed to Search Engine Land that late last week it pushed out a small update to the Panda filter. "We're continuing to iterate on our Panda algorithm as part of our commitment to returning high-quality sites to Google users," a Google spokesperson told us. "This most recent update is one of the roughly 500 changes we make to our ranking algorithms each year," the spokesperson added. Over the past week or so, I have been tracking the complaints in the various forums, including the large ongoing thread at WebmasterWorld. At first, I felt the complaints suggested that Goog [...]

Just A Matter Of Time: Google +1′s Being Sold By The Thousands

google-plusone-featured A report by the Atlantic shined a light on a new "social media service" which allows users to purchase Google +1's in bulk.  The site in question, Pluseem, has a variety of different Google+ package sizes, from 50 plusses to 2,000, with the prices ranging from $0.18 - $0.38 per plus. Of course this is a direct violation of Google's quality guidelines: Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you'd feel comfortable explaining what you've done to a website that competes with you. Another useful test is to ask, "Does this help my users? Wo [...]

Russia’s Search Engine Yandex Steathily Moves West

Yandex now has deeper cash pockets following its IPO — so where and in what type of expansion is the company going to expand? Moving west and south perhaps? There are good competitive reasons why Yandex needs to take its battle with Google to other markets — but it also needs to be secure at home — in Russia.

A Google Plus Primer On Links & Rank

There are a lot of questions bouncing around about Google+ links and their impact and effect on rank. I will share what I feel confident about and also give you a road map of must read articles that once read, will really help you to feel more comfortable with what we do and don't know about Google Plus, link building and sharing, and search rank. Stream First, for the link builder, the obvious. You post a URL in the "Share What's New" box, below and share it with "Public", or with one or more of your Circles. Effects Of Choice Positioning On Social Purchasing Behavior

As I discussed in How Prototype Theory Influences a Social Strategy, they way that people influence others and their decisions is based on their associations with certain words and phrases. For example, the word tree will most likely bring up an image of an oak or maple tree in a person’s mind, versus a less common tree, such as a birch or weeping willow. The way that people associate words and phrases and let them influence his or her decisions is something that is related to both prototype theory and the types of information sharing discussed in Colleen Roller’s well-written article, [...]

Twitter Search Gets “New Twitter” Look & Feel

twitter-search-featured For ages, Twitter has operated a standalone Twitter Search site in addition to allowing people to search from within Twitter.com itself. Today, that standalone site has gained a new location and been upgraded to match the Twitter.com search experience. Previously, Twitter Search was located at http://search.twitter.com. Now, that address leads to http://twitter.com/search, as tweeted by Twitter earlier today. What's different beyond the URL? The interface. See More With Right Panel Support Searching at Twitter.com makes it easy to perform a search and then pop-open a right panel to view m [...]

Google Relaunches Boost As AdWords Express

Further consolidating the products (or at least their names) in the local and mobile space, Google has re-named Boost as AdWords Express, also stepping up marketing efforts and consolidating sign-up for Express and Google Places. "We've seen great success with the product, but we want to change the product name to better emphasize the ties to the main AdWords product," said Kiley McEvoy, the product manager for AdWords Express. McEvoy told me that the company had "tens of thousands" of advertisers using what's now called AdWords Express. The product was first announced, and introduced to [...]

The cars were supposed to collect the locations of Wi-Fi access points.
