AdWords Adds Reporting On Trigger Keywords, Amid Other Interface Changes

AddingKeywordColumn Ever wondered exactly what keywords in a searcher's query resulted in your ad being triggered? Google has added a feature in AdWords to give advertisers that information, allowing them to adjust their keywords and bids accordingly. Meanwhile, the company has made other interface changes -- including account diagnostics and new impression share reporting. The new keyword column is available in the search terms report. To add the column, click the "Columns" drop-down and click "Customize columns." Then click "Attributes" and click "Add" on "Keyword." The new feature got positive reactions [...]

As a UK-based local SEO, I am envious of the plethora of local and social events that run regularly in the US; sadly, I don’t get across to many of them. So, it’s great to see an event of this caliber thriving in the UK, and even better to see the array of talented speakers and panelists who attended from the UK, Canada & US. 10 Reasons Enterprise SEO Is Trouble, Plus 4 Ways To Make It Work

It sounds really attractive: 9-5 hours. You get to focus on a single product. You can win over a single IT department. The grass is way greener over there. But the truth is, in the SEO world, the large enterprise is in trouble. I know about brand favoritism. And I know large enterprises have massive resources at their disposal. All marketers have if only moments: after a particularly grueling client meeting or a day of fighting one fire after another, we think ‘If only I was an in-house SEO at a big, big company.’ The problem? They can never seem to use those resources. And except [...]

Google: Want To Switch To HTTPS? Go Ahead!

google-https Google's Matt Cutts said on a Hacker News comment that those who are interested in switching their whole web site from http to https should go ahead and do that. I spotted this comment in response to Facebook going HTTPS by default, where someone mentioned that Google may have an issue indexing HTTPS content. Matt Cutts, Google's head of search spam, said no - they index it fine and you can "feel free to go HTTPS" at this time. This is interesting in that we know since Google switched to HTTPS on Google search by default, that the [not provided] statistic in analytics packages have caus [...]

Can Google AdWords Customer Service Be Saved?

google-call-center-featured I recently had an AdWords client get blacklisted by Google for policy reasons. Anyone who has worked on AdWords accounts for more than a couple of years has no doubt had this happen to them as well. In this case, I had just launched the client’s account and had bought a total of maybe 20 innocuous terms. To be clear, there was *absolutely* no reason for this client to be banned (the client offers free online classes, is VC-funded, and 100% legit in every way). Here’s the initial email we got from Google notifying us that we had been blacklisted: From: <adwords-noreply@google.com [...]

Firefox To Add Search Engine Hijacking Warnings To Browser

firefox-keywordurl-hijack-warning BrowserFame reports the latest "nightly channel" of the Firefox browser, version 19, is warning browser users when it appears someone is hijacking the search engine results. This is to warn users when they may be "falling victim" to "search hijacking" according to the feature page. The page goes on to explain how the feature works in more detail: Some of these cases are triggered by aggressive malware that wants to steal search referrals, but other cases can be resolved by us simply resetting the pref to its default value once: - poorly written add-ons that legitimately change t [...]

bing-google-featured Google and Bing both hit all-time highs in U.S. search market share in October, while overall desktop search activity was up eight percent from the month before. Bing gained a tenth of a point and reached 16 percent in October. Both of those numbers represent all-time highs using comScore's estimates. Yahoo was static for the month and Ask's share was down. Bing Publishes Its Webmaster Guidelines

bing-search-featured Bing has published its first set of webmaster guidelines, offering website owners general guidance on best practices related to SEO for Bing's search engine. They're accessible in the Help section of Bing's Webmaster Tools as a new entry under the "Content Guidelines" section. The direct link is www.bing.com/webmaster/help/webmaster-guidelines-30fba23a. Bing's Webmaster Guidelines touch on things like links and social media in very general terms, and go into a bit more depth on SEO and technical website topics. How To Gather Evidence To Help Determine If It’s Time For A Mobile Website

Is t time for a mobile website? I was talking to some clients a few weeks ago and in separate conversations, both asked me if it was time for a mobile website. Their current websites rendered okay on a smartphone, but they noticed a lack of conversions for mobile users, as well as a high bounce rate. Generally, a page that can be enlarged can be read on a mobile device. What you run into for the user is a lack of functionality and interaction with the site. Dropdown or slide out navigation is nearly impossible to click on; if you're using video or Ajax functionality it can be lost or not n [...]

Google Maps App A Step Closer To iTunes Submission

Google maps icon larger When Apple announced, in June, that it was introducing its own maps and ousting Google from its default position on the iPhone, that was perhaps the best thing that could have happened to Mountain View. Apple subsequently introduced an elegant-looking but flawed mapping app as part of iOS 6. While Apple and its mapping mistakes have helped to open up the market somewhat, and brought new attention to third party mapping apps such as Waze, Scout and others, they have also created an opening for Google to fully monetize local search on the iPhone in ways that were not equally possible before. [...]
