3 Ways To Prioritize Your Global Search Marketing Efforts To Maximize ROI

I was pleased to be part of a great panel at SMX London on prioritizing your search marketing efforts. It included SEO veterans Mikkel deMib Svendsen of deMib.com, Julia Longdon of ContentMango and Dave Davies of Beanstalk. For me, this was an extremely useful session with a huge hidden ROI benefit for search marketers not necessarily obvious in the title of the session. Why? The answer is very simple -- it’s known as the REAL Law, which stands for "Resources for Everyone are Always Limited." Even the largest organization must make choices about what they do with resources. Often, the lar [...]

Seeking Broader Appeal Blekko Offers Bold New UI

blekko-2-featured In January, upstart search engine Blekko launched a specialized tablet app called Izik. The UI and overall experience were optimized for the touch-screen devices. Search results were more visual and finger friendly. Most of all, CEO Rich Skrenta stressed that Izik was leaving behind the familiar "10 blue links." As part of the Izik launch, Blekko built an API. Now that API, together with Blekko's corpus of curated search categories (slashtags), form the infrastructure behind a new Izik-inspired design for the main Blekko site. This morning, Blekko is introducing a bold redesign that puts mo [...]

6 Evolutionary Phases Of The Online Marketer

We online marketers can get a little full of ourselves. Those of us who strive to educate others about our craft can get preachy about the "right way" to bring traffic to websites and optimize that traffic for conversions. However, like those we are educating, we ourselves have evolved (and are still evolving) throughout our online marketing journey. What works for us now only works because we endured this evolutionary process and were able to learn from experience. We often forget those years we spent growing -- we want our readers to simply jump to a new level after reading our brillia [...]

New: AdWords Report Scheduling For Any Day Of The Week

A new change in AdWords allows marketers to schedule reports to run any day of the week. Up to now, reports could be scheduled for the first of the month, daily or weekly on Monday. So, if you report Friday through Thursday, for example, scheduled reports weren't very helpful. Now, you can schedule weekly reports for any day of the week. Reports can span the previous 7, 14 or 30 days and emailed to you on the day that best meets your reporting needs. [...]

What Exactly Is Meant by “Retargeting”?

Retargeting is not a new concept to the digital industry -- in fact, it has been around for some time -- but its uses and forms have definitely evolved. Over the course of this evolution, "retargeting" has become somewhat of a loose term – we now see it used alongside "search" and "social" in addition to its original form, "site retargeting." In my opinion, there is a real need for clarification of, and education about, retargeting. For example, is search retargeting really re-targeting? Despite its name, search retargeting is more of a mid- to upper-funnel strategy that engages new users, [...]

Getting Away From Our PPC Campaigns This Summer

Having just finished marching in three parades and playing Taps at Memorial Day observances to honor our deceased veterans, I find myself looking forward to the more relaxed days of summer, and wondering how in the heck I can get away from my PPC campaigns this summer. [caption id="attachment_161017" align="aligncenter" width="439"] Wouldn't it be nice to take the whole summer away from PPC campaign management? EU Says More Google “Concessions” Needed Before Antitrust Settlement

google-eu-featured The vigorous lobbying efforts of Google critics FairSearch.org and Foundem's SearchNeutrality.org seem to be paying off. Earlier today EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia told members of the European Parliament that additional "concessions" would probably be required of Google to settle the antitrust investigation against the company and avoid litigation and potential financial penalties. According to Reuters, Almunia said the following: After [all the settlement proposal feedback is received] we will analyze the responses we have received, we will ask Google, probably, I cannot an [...]

Removing URLs From The Index In Bulk

Need to remove URLs from the index? For a small number of URLs, this can be a relatively straightforward process -- when you are dealing with thousands or tens of thousands, it can be a lot more complex, especially if you feel a great deal of urgency about the matter. This is what I am going to focus on today: situations where the amount of content is massive and the urgency is high. It turns out that you have several options -- so let's explore what they are! Why Remove Content In The First Place? There are many possible reasons, but here are some of the most common: You published co [...]

Are You Taking Advantage Of Content Byproducts?

what would you like to see In my last column, I discussed how to create linkbait by writing about other people. Shari Thurow made a comment that fits in perfectly with an idea I had about finding ways to expand existing content and better market the byproducts of your business: "Instead of linking to the link-bait article, I'll write my own POV (point of view) in the proper context and promote it elsewhere." Shari's idea was to respond further to interviews by writing more on her own site. This allows you to clarify any statements you made that were possibly taken out of context or misquoted, for example. But, I thin [...]

Communicators, Take Note: The Deplorable State Of Social Search Is Changing

search-social-featured The rate at which people share information (profound and profane alike) on sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube is staggering. 137 million status updates per day appear on Facebook, 230 million tweets are shared per day on Twitter and 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute -- all numbers which increase daily. No doubt, social media is alive and well. Social media properties have clearly made the processes of creating and sharing content a compelling activity for everyone. Yet the story is altogether different when it comes to retrieving content. Ever tried to search for [...]

8 Keys To A Successful Local Business Website

A company website is the core of most local businesses’ online presence. In fact, more than half of all SMB online marketing service dollars are spent on the Web presence category, including Web design and hosting, according to a Borrell Associates study released late last year. Yet, despite its central role, the vast majority of SMBs continue to struggle in developing a site that can be easily found in search and that provides the information, engagement and trust that consumers are looking for. A recent vSplash audit of the presence of 3.9 million U.S. SMB websites found deficiencies [...]

Google Glass Diary, Part 4: Local Search & Navigation

google-glass-local-search-featured Remember that first Google Glass video? It was published a little more than a year ago and gave the world its first glimpse at what Google had in mind for Glass. Even though Google described it as "an early concept video," you can clearly see that local search and navigation was a key aspect of Google's concept. The first two minutes of the 2:30 video practically center on local stuff: search, information, businesses and navigation. And, that's smart because since Glass is a mobile device, local search and navigation is bound to be an even more common use case than the more traditional G [...]
