Google Shopping Expanding 360 Degree Product Images, Making New Hire

google-shopping-featured Last year, Google began adding 360 degree product views to Google Shopping ahead of the holiday season. This year, the search giant continued to tout the 360 views and have expanded from toys to other consumer products that consumers typically like to examine closely such as cameras. Users can move the images around to see all sides, top and bottom of a product and theoretically "feel as if they’re picking up products off the shelf". The company appears to have hired or be close to hiring a new partner technology manager for the program. A LinkedIn posting now states the job is no longer [...]

Year Of The Hummingbird: Our Top SEO Columns Of 2013

sel-seo2013-featured Our All Things SEO column covers a wide range of topics within the realm of organic search, and this past year saw no dearth of material for our columnists. Perhaps one of the most widely discussed issues within the SEO community in 2013 was the loss of keyword referral data, as Google moved to encrypt all search activity this past September. SEOs relying on this keyword data were forced to change up their tactics and adjust their strategies to accommodate this development. Semantic search was another hot topic in 2013. Although the Schema.org initiative was launched in mid-2011, th [...]

New Year’s Eve 2013 Google Logo Is Bringing In The New Year With A Disco

Google New Year's Eve logo 2013 Today's Google logo is celebrating New Year's Eve disco-style. The interactive logo includes a spinning disco ball, pounding speakers and a light-up dance floor. The numbers for "2013" dance away, while the number "4" awaits to takes its spot with glancing eyes. Clicking the logo delivers search results for "New Year's Eve 2013." The logo is sorely lacking audio. With all the dancing numbers and the vibrating speakers, it's hard not to want to hear something from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Maybe the New Year's Day logo will actually give us something to dance to, even if it is [...]

Google’s Rap Genius Penalty Results In Huge Traffic Declines For The Lyrics Site

rapgenius-logo Before Christmas, Rap Genius was outed for link schemes and then on Christmas, Google penalized the site for those link schemes. The penalty is still on and a couple metrics sites show huge drops in traffic for the site, some as much as losing 90% of their traffic since the penalty. Marcus from Search Metrics published the impact this Google penalty had on their search visibility in Google. Marcus noted that there was a 92% drop in search visibility according to their metrics. Search Metrics tracked hundreds of keywords that were impacted by this penalty, not just their home page but [...]

Latest Google Related Dilbert Pokes Fun At Google Engineers

207821.strip On Friday, Scott Adams's Dilbert published another Dilbert comic strip related to Google on Google Engineers. This one pokes fun on a stereotype that Google engineers are arrogant. As you can see from the comic, it plays heavily on how great Google engineers think of themselves. The comic starts with the employer saying: I hired an engineer from Google. He's so smart that he evolved into a life-form that exists as pure energy. The energy life-form (aka Google engineer) responds: Bow before my greatness, you pitiful humans! The employer explains: Sometimes he's a bit a [...]

How SEO Greed Can Ruin A Perfectly Good Linking Strategy

rapgenius-logo By now, you are likely aware of the Rap Genius "Tweet In Exchange For Anchor Text" link scheme, hencefore to be known as TieFating. Barry Schwartz reported last week on John Marbach's exposé of the popular music site, Rap Genius, which had started an "affiliate" program in order to get links pointing to their website. After it was exposed, Matt Cutts, head of Google's Webspam team, said, "we’re aware and looking into it." The site was then officially penalized for link schemes. Link Building 2013: Looking Back At This Year’s Top Link Week Columns

sel-2013-review-featured With each passing year, search engine algorithms grow increasingly sophisticated in their ability to identify (and penalize) spammy links. Among other things, this year marked the fourth and fifth releases of Google's spam-filtering Penguin update (Penguin 2.0 and 2.1, respectively). Additionally, many link building tactics that were once considered legitimate were unceremoniously moved to the "spam" column in 2013. Google updated its webmaster guidelines to provide additional guidance on what they now consider to be an unnatural link, and even Bing detailed several ways not to buil [...]
