Today’s Google logo pays homage to Eiji Tsuburaya, one of the most influential special effects directors in cinematic history.

Tsuburaya’s film credits include creating Ultraman and co-creating the Godzilla series. He is also responsible for bringing the Japanese live action genre known as “Tokusatsu” to mainstream cinema.

“It’s fascinating to me how long-lasting the results of his work has been,” said Doodler Jennifer Horn who helped design today’s logo, “It’s easy to see remnants of the Tokusatsu style in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, Evangelion, and even the Power Rangers.”

Horn visited the Tsuburaya Productions as part of her research for the Tsuburaya logo, and said she was inspired to build an interactive Doodle that reflected the “fun, fast, and totally chaotic” process involved in Tokusatsu style of film-making.

The animated Doodle includes a 10-step process for building a Tokusatsu style film, with an illustrated Tsuburaya showing how it’s done using a number of the characters he created.

Here’s a video of the Doodle captured by the Amanz YouTube channel:
