Instagram is a free app for the iPhone allows users to modify and enhance photos by applying these filters to photos (as well as modify images easily.) The service has over 5 million users mainly due to the ability to enhance images with custom filters, it’s ease of use and community features.

The New York Times reports that this Facebook enhancement has been ready for quite some time, and that Facebook did make efforts to acquire Instagram. Clearly, the sale did not go through, and Facebook is fighting back.

This also comes on the heels of learning that there may be a built in filter program in Apple’s upcoming iOS upgrade. The photo filter space may just become over-staurated itself soon.
