What I like is that you start off with the most basic, and probably the most important question – does the site owner have the access to the back end to install the code? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been teaching SEO and so many of my attendees have no control over accessing or editing their site. Great article for newbies!

“If you’re using AdWords, you’re going to want to enable AdWords domain
tracking with the check box to the right of the domain options.”
The GA traffic tracking script stays the same if you check the AdWords box, the only thing it does is add a step below the script, reminding you to link you AdWords and Analytics accounts together, so that the PPC cost data can be seen in Analytics.

Yup, the only item that you’d have to check is Doubleclick data since that does change the implementation code. But let’s face it, if you’re a Novice or Beginner you likely aren’t using Doubleclick.

Great tips and excellent guide. I have had a couple of customers who were in the knowledge that their Analytics were working fine but this was not the case, There are some simple tweaks one should apply, and you have described the process very well.

    thanks for sharing.

Hi , i have problem , i can see only direct visits but not search traffic and reference one..what can i do

    Hi Raghava,
That is definitely an odd issue! I would maybe start with checking my script installation – try running analyticscheckup.com for your site to make sure the scripts are configured correctly and on every page.

If the scripts are all okay, and on every page, I’d maybe talk to an analytics expert to see if there’s something blocking the reporting of referral or search traffic.

    Good Luck!

Two questions Carrie (or anyone?) -

    1. Suppose I started with ‘Single Domain’ and now I want to add a sub-domain, how do I reset accordingly?

    2. Suppose I (stupidly) started with a single domain designation and used the sub-domain as the “single domain”? How do I reset to encompass sub and primary??

Thanks Carrie (or anyone)! – marcus
