The Google Earth Blog has an overview of a big, high resolution image update for Google Maps (also on Google Earth). The update is global. The two “platforms” are inching closer together with all KML files being indexed and discoverable now in Google Maps. Also, last week Google (on the Lat Long Blog) promoted its “help model a city” program enlisting the community to help fill in 3D coverage around the U.S. Google also has reportedly licensed automated 3D rendering technology that will accelerate the 3D build out on Google Earth.
All this comes on the heels of the highly publicized and much discussed (and debated) roll out of Google StreetView.
