Google Maps Adds Ski Resort Trail Maps For Android & iPhone

Over on the Google Lat / Long blog,  Google Maps announced new feature that overlays lifts and trail maps for 38 major ski areas in the U.S., available from Google Maps using your Android device or iPhone.

It could be a handy feature, provided you have two things: something like Burton Screen Grab gloves so you can swipe the touchscreen on your smartphone without your hands being exposed to the cold air and active cellphone service on the top of the mountain or within the trees. Some ski areas and certain trails of course, can lack decent cellphone reception in low valleys or tree areas.

Here’s a screenshot of one of my home mountains, Brighton Ski Resort in Utah:

Previously, Google Maps also announced a “street view” feature for select ski runs, although the progress in mapping out the slopes via the snowmobile camera seems to have stalled.

Still disappointed they haven’t added back in the National Park trails. That was in the previous Google Maps app for iPhone that Apple built and then removed to everyone’s dismay.

Meh. This kind of data has been available for a couple of years in OpenStreetMap data. See http://openpistemap.org/ for example. And for bonus points, you can download OSM data for offline use in several apps. I’m sure there is a ski rendering style out there for OsmAnd.
