On Mobile, Google Now Allows You To Handwrite What You’re Searching For

It started with typing your query, then voice queries, then image based queries and now Google announced you can hand-write your queries.

Google announced today you can hand write your query on your smartphone or tablet when on Google.com. All you have to do is place your finger on the Google home page and use your finger to write. Google will use its handwriting technology to convert the handwriting to text.

To enable it, go to Google.com on your mobile or tablet device and click on “Settings” at the bottom of the screen (or for tablets at the top right) and enable “Handwrite.” Then go to Google.com on the device and start writing.

Here is a screen shot after you enable the handwrite option:

Once it is enabled, the home page wil allow you to write your query. On the search results page you can activate the screen by clicking on the “Handwrite icon” at the bottom right of the screen. Here is a more detailed help document on handwrite instructions and here is a tips document from Google on this new feature.

Interesting! I wonder how accurate it is, and if other programs will adapt this handwriting technology into their mobile websites and apps?

a bit annoying to have to switch out of handwriting mode to be able to browse search results..but still a neat idea :)

  • jkings

Neat idea but it’s going to take a lot more time to write out a query than typing one.

I guess it will help people save much of their time and energy. Since mobile screen are small and handy typing on the tiny keyboard has always been a matter of headache. Hope this will save us from all those difficulties.

It’s amazing, better if it will be a bit more clever. Googlers always
rock. Hope they will make the recognition more smart so that it can
easily be used on small screen devices.

Very nice, I just had a play on my smart phone which has quite a large screen and it worked rather well :)

The only problem I had was with a couple of letters, for example if you write “g” in lower cast and don’t join it up fully it seems to think its an “s” or “w” some times lol. but apart from my sloppy hand writing I think this is working great and couple take of quite well if google markets it to the real world and not just web savvy people like webmasters and SEOs

Pretty cool but sometimes it’s hard to avoid clicking on one of the suggestions, especially when you need to tap to write something, like the dot in a lowercase “i”.

This feature is damn cool and worked well on my smart phone. But, it may be a bit annoying in the beginning.

Its a nice gimmik, but wouldnt use it for everyday use. It takes longer than if you just typed your query.

Hi I am using blackberry but can’t found any one suggest me how can i enable this feature????

  • Blue-eyed Gal

Well, that’s one way to get people to come to Goog’s homepage instead of using Safari’s search box.

Google has to keep doing gimmicks like this to counteract its deteriorating “evil” reputation. But I admit, I find it handy.

Now if they’d just fix it so you could cross out a search query and write a new one, instead of having to fumble for the tiny x button! Otherwise, I’m finding it faster than typing.

I love to use Mobile but, it was so frustrating when I had to search something from
Google. This will be a helpful feature for me as it saves time typing any query. So, searching on mobile has become too easy and fast with this new handwriting enhancement.
