Google Testing New ‘Search Within’ Tool; Also, Bigger URLs In Search Results

Google Logo - StockHere are a couple current user interface changes that Google appears to be testing.

Search Within

The first one comes to us from Tecno-Net, and shows Google adding a “Search Within” command to its Google Instant interface.

When you do certain searches — like [CNN], [Apple] or [Google] — one of the options that Google Instant shows is “Search Within,” which allows you to limit your search to the specific website. If that doesn’t quite make sense, Tecno-Net’s video should make it more clear:

Bigger Green URLS

One other test involves larger text on the green-colored URL that Google shows below each search result. Alex Chitu spotted this and shared this screenshot on his Google Operating System blog.

I don’t see either of these changes when I do searches on Google this morning.

As always, Google is regularly running numerous tests to its user interface and not all of them get approved for wide rollout. Google users may see as many as 12 tests every time they do a search.

  • Reah Sandberg

Search Within is similar to what site: operator does. They just made it look more appealing.

  • Aidan McCarthy

The larger urls have been used in Australia for about two weeks now…

  • alex miklin

    Great article, Matt!

  • Christopher Pratt

Isn’t this just a site: search? Is this actually new in function in any way?

  • Matt McGee

The end functionality is the same, but it’s a much more visible way to get those results. We can assume that very few “average” users know that the site: command exists.
