Google has a Google Logo, aka Google Doodle, today for Mary Leakey’s 100th birthday.
Mary Leakey was a British archaeologist and anthropologist who earned hear fame after discovering the first fossilized Proconsul skull. The Proconsul skull is of an extinct ape which is believed to be from humans descent.
She is also credited with discovering the Zinjanthropus skull at Olduvai Gorge, developing a system for classifying the stone tools found at Olduvai, and discovering the Laetoli footprints. In her 83 years of life, she has contributed a lot to the field of archaeology.
She was married to Louis Leakey, who she worked with for most of his career. Her husband died on October 1, 1972 and she died while in Kenya, East Africa on December 9, 1996. She left three children; Richard Leakey, Philip Leakey, and Jonathan Leakey.
