What’s In A Brand? AOL Becomes “Aol.”

One wonders how much the branding consultancy Wolff Olins was paid to help create America Online's new "brand identity." Over the weekend the about-to-be-independent company revealed its new brand and brand philosophy. The major change (so far) is the move from uppercase to lowercase letters: from "AOL" to "Aol." Here's how the release describes that new identity: The new AOL brand identity is a simple, confident logotype, revealed by ever-changing images.  It’s one consistent logo with countless ways to reveal. The new brand identity will be fully unveiled on December 10, when AOL common [...]

AOL’s Truveo Relaunches As Improved Video Search Destination

According to comScore the average watcher of online video in the US took in 385 minutes-worth in April. And according to Nielsen, in May, "year-over-year, unique viewers, total streams, streams per viewer and time per viewer were up, led by a 49 percent growth in time per viewer." The leading video site is Google/YouTube by a large margin with almost double the unique users of Fox Interactive Media, the next ranking US online video provider. After that it becomes much more competitive. Against that backdrop of intense competition and increasing consumer demand for online video, AOL's video [...]

Truveo Says It’s The Most Comprehensive Video Search Provider

An internal Truveo study conducted during the past month found that Truveo has a more comprehensive video search coverage than its top competitors. According to Truveo it undertook the study itself because "there is no major testing organization, publication or consulting firm publicly conducting ongoing quality studies of video search engines." Included in the study were Blinkx, Google Video, Microsoft Live Video Search and Yahoo Video search, in addition to Truveo. YouTube was not included because it's not considered by Truveo to be a "video search engine." Truveo indexes YouTube results. [...]

AOL Offers Video Ticker Ads

AOL is introducing a new video advertising format: ticker ads. It's the latest video site to move away from pre-roll, which the Online Publishers Association suggests is a good model but otherwise is roundly rejected by users as delivering a bad experience. According to the AOL press release, the new ads were developed in conjunction with Gannett-owned PointRoll. Here's how they work: Rather than overlaying an ad and obstructing the view of a video, AOL's video ticker ad appears at the bottom of the video player 10 seconds into the video stream. When clicked by a user, the ad expands whil [...]

Truveo Launches Big International Expansion

After relaunching this August as a video search engine and consumer destination, AOL's Truveo is aggressively expanding on a global basis. By the end of the year, Truveo intends to be in 15 countries, including Russia and Turkey. Starting today it will be available outside the U.S. in France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Spain, Taiwan, and the UK. The URLs all follow the pattern: http://uk.truveo.com. More URLs for the international sites can be found in the release. YouTube has numerous international sites as well. However, Truveo indexes YouTube video in addition to video from major brand [...]

Truveo Adds European Videos From Kewego

AOL-owned video search engine Truveo has struck a deal with European white label video platform Kewego to offer European television and other EU video content (from 20 countries) to audiences through Truveo. In August Truveo relaunched as a consumer destination and comprehensive video search engine and portal that hopes to eventually challenge YouTube. Most of the videos on Kewego appear to stream within a player on the site rather than referring out to a third party site, which Truveo does some of the time based on its partner requirements. [...]

AOL’s Truveo Introduces New Video Search Site And Consumer Destination

AOL acquired video search engine Truveo in January, 2006 and has used it primarily as a technology platform to power AOL video since that time. Simultaneously, the company has been supporting video search on third party sites. (See our previous coverage.) You could do video searches on Truveo.com but it wasn't really presented as a consumer destination – until now. Last night, Truveo relaunched as a consumer video search destination. Emphasizing branded content (including branded channels), it may be the most comprehensive video search site on the Internet. The site also has a host of pers [...]

AOL Relaunches Video Portal

AOL is busy upgrading and relaunching a range of features and sites on its network. The latest on the list to get a revamp is the video portal. The redesigned site offers a new home page, an upgraded video search experience (via its video engine Truveo) and an embedded playback experience. There's also a new Windows Vista gadget that offers AOL video content on the desktop, has customizable "skins" and a number of dynamic features including a "real-time ticker" that indicates when new videos are added to the Truveo index. [...]

AOL’s Truveo Builds Video Search Network With 40 Million Users

Video search engine Truveo, acquired by AOL in late 2005, announced that it now has a user base of almost 40 million monthly uniques (per comScore). This is not at Truveo.com but across a diverse network of partner sites, which it powers. The company also said that since late last year it has seen 50 percent "month over month" growth across that network. Truveo CEO (and AOL Video SVP) Tim Tuttle attributes this to the copyright crackdown on YouTube and the efforts that users are making to find video content they used to find on YouTube from other sources. It may also be that users are genera [...]
