Ask’s New App Search To Be Powered By Quixey

apps-featured Quixey and Ask have entered into a deal in which apps from Quixey's database, whether for mobile or the PC, will be integrated into search results. It's going live today and should be rolling out now, although it's not yet live for me. Apps in Ask search results will be from Android, iOS, Windows Phone and Blackberry. Tomer Kagan, co-founder and CEO of Quixey, says that apps can equally be "answers" to search queries. Apps thus become one more content category for end users. While app search has existed for some time in specialized sites and app stores, the further mainstreaming of app [...]

Ask.com Returns To TV With Spot Emphasizing Q&A

Ask.com has a long history in TV advertising; some of it has been entertaining and some of it controversial. But the IAC-owned search engine was on a TV hiatus of sorts during the past couple of years. Now, according to AdWeek, the company is running new TV ads in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The ads reportedly focus on Ask's more recent positioning as a Q&A engine: The 15-second commercials emphasize the company’s new focus on fact-based answers to questions posed in everyday language, showing people asking things like "Where can I watch TV online for free?" and "Does speed dating [...]

Ask.com Opens Up Its Human Q&A Community, Steps Further Away From Search

ask logo After more than a year in beta, Ask.com today opened the doors on its community-based question-and-answer product. It positions Ask as much less search-oriented, and much more Q&A based -- not unlike its original incarnation in the 1990s. The Q&A site had been available in beta to a limited number of users since last July (2010) when Ask began to transition from search to Q&A. As you'll see on the third screenshot below, Ask says it has more than 344,000 people already in the Q&A community. At the time of the initial announcement last summer, the Ask.com homepage still had a search bar, [...]

Here is a video me interacting with the Google logo. Google was not the only search company celebrating Earth Day with a special logo, so is Yahoo, Bing, Ask.com, AOL and others. St. Patrick’s Day Logo Not On Google.com

This is the first time in years that Google does not have a St. Patrick's Day logo on the Google.com home page. Google does have a special logo on Google Ireland but not on Google.com. Here is the Google St. Patrick's Day logo on Google Ireland: I have a feeling Google did not post it globally because of the Japanse crisis but I do not have that confirmed as of yet. Interestingly enough, Yahoo.com is also missing the St. Patrick's Day logo. Only those in the Ireland region will see an animated logo. Here it is: Bing, Ask.com, Dogpile, DuckDuckGo and some others have logo [...]

Ask Launches Local Conversations iPhone App

Ask.com noticed some interesting behavior happening on its Q&A iPhone application. People were trying to have "conversations" in the comments area of the app, according to Ask's Jason Rupp. Much of that chat activity was focused on particular locations. But Ask's Q&A app wasn't intended to support full-blown conversations. Cut to several months later and, just in time for the SXSW conference, Ask is launching a new app focused on local conversations. It's called Ask Around. Location awareness on the phone immediately puts people into the middle of a local conversation. All commen [...]

The study is intended in part of promote Ask's Q&A mobile app. But the data also reflect and confirm interesting differences between mobile and PC user attitudes and behavior. Ask.com To Focus On Q&A Search, End Web Crawling

Talk about getting back to your roots. Ask.com, which originally used humans to find answers to questions, is going further back to its origins by abandoning its web crawling technology. The Need, Or Not, To Crawl Search engines like Google and Bing try to have answers to anything someone might search for by "crawling" the web, making copies of all the pages they find and storing them in a searchable database, or index. Ask has done the same thing since around 2001, when it acquired the Teoma search engine. Crawling helps ensure that you have a comprehensive index. However, crawling is an [...]

John Mulaney said, and here is the transcript: First up in the world of technology. I heard this week that AOL might be buying Yahoo. I love it! That is so sweet. It is like when two people in a nursing home start dating. They may not have much time left, but at least they have each other. I love it! You can watch the skit on Hulu, if Hulu allows you to. It is the introductory part of the sn [...]

IAC Boss Barry Diller Disses Ask, Says It Has “No Value”

Like a father disowning his own child IAC's Barry Diller seems to have all but written off the search engine he paid almost two billion dollars for a few short years ago (update: see Barry Diller statement below). According to TechCrunch, Diller told a conference audience (partial paraphrase) that today Ask had "no value." I don’t think Ask.com is going to gain search share; everyone copied us . . . Ask has no value inside of IAC, so why would it add value as a standalone site? That can't be correct because Ask contributes substantial revenue to the company's Media & Advertising divis [...]
