Mark Zuckerberg Says Facebook Search Is A Multiyear Voyage

facebook-graph-search-600 During Facebook's call with investors yesterday detailing another quarter of runaway financial success, CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent a good amount of time discussing one of the less social aspects of the social network: search. Facebook, he said, is committed to spending the company's money and resources in a long-term effort to make searching within the platform a better experience for its users. "Search for Facebook is going to be a multiyear voyage," Zuckerberg said. By getting it right, he said, Facebook will be able to give users information they can't get from other search engines [...]

And we're not just talking about click fraud here.  The fraudulent tactic affecting PPC the most dramatically these days is a fairly insidious one that can be hard to detect. It's called PPC ad impersonation and occurs when an impostor advertiser takes a known URL, like JossAndMain.com, and uses it as the Display URL of their own advertisement. When you first hear about PPC fraud rings, you tend to think of click fraud where an automated system, not a real pe [...]

Google Tests Showing Product Ads In Knowledge Graph Carousel Area

test-experiment-trail-600 About a year ago, Google launched the carousel interface to better distribute content from their Knowledge Graph. IE8 Users Don’t Get Forwarded To Google Secure Search

Internet Explorer At the moment, users of IE8, still the most popular version of the Internet Explorer browser worldwide, are being sent to unsecure search on Google. The move to send users to Google regular servers instead of secure servers is related to Google seeming to work through how it deals with people still using the older browser. Webmasters may notice referrer data from IE8 visitors coming from Google turning on and off as a result of this work. Users of other IE versions are still sent to secure search. With this current switch, the full set of referrer data including the keyword used in the quer [...]

What Do Users Really Think Of The New Google Design?

google-homepage-search-600 When Google started testing the new look for its search results pages which ditches the shading behind the ads and replaces it with yellow "ad" icons, contradictory outcries of this sort began popping up, "Ad click-through rates are going to plummet because the ads are too obvious with those bright icons." "The ads look like organic listings without the yellow background shading. Nobody will notice those tiny icons." Google made the transition to the new look official last week. The other changes that came with the update are the removal of underlines, larger title fonts (and shorter titl [...]

Study: Researchers Blame Google Flu Trends Inaccuracies On Ongoing Algorithm Updates

google-health-medical Researchers at Northeastern University in Boston claim the regular overestimation of flu cases by Google Flu Trends can be blamed on Google's ever-evolving algorithms and the inaccurate analysis of big data. Google Flu Trends often has been cited for incorrectly projecting the number of flu cases. In 2010, a University of Washington study claimed Google Flu Trends was 25 percent less accurate than reports from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Just last year, Nature.com reported Google Flu Trends overestimated the number of people with influenza like illnesses (ILI) by nearly double. [...]

Google Reviewing “Not Provided,” Withholding Keywords From Organic But Not Paid Search Clicks

not-provided-featured When Google moved to secure search in October 2011, it was a blow to publishers, who began losing data about the search terms used to reach their sites. It also opened Google up to claims of hypocrisy, in that advertisers continued to receive the terms. Now, Google says it's reexamining the issue and seeking a better solution. Will clicks on non-paid listings go back to passing along search term data again? Will ad clicks have that withheld? Google didn't say either way, and there could be other possibilities, as well. Google Looking For Solution The news came out of a keynote convers [...]

How 3 B2B Companies Integrate SEO In Their Online Marketing Strategies

2014 State of Marketing Even though B2B marketing goals and objectives remain relatively consistent year to year, what's changing are buyer expectations of marketing programs and communication. In late 2012, Simon McEvoy of Tangent Snowball wrote about the influence consumerism was having on the B2B buyer. After all, B2B buyers are people, too. The exposure of dynamic communication and marketing campaigns at the consumer level ultimately influences their expectations of marketing as  business buyers.
