Tax Season: Plan Now For Great Advertising Returns

ppc-puzzle-featured Someone once said that Americans deserved a tax system that looked as it if were designed on purpose. No doubt, the world is a complicated place when tax time looms. Rule changes, exemptions, complicated deductions -- it's no wonder that people start to sweat a little as April 15 approaches. If there's one thing taxpayers can cheer, however, it's the fact that the web has really helped reduce the pain of researching tax information, completing tax documents and submitting tax returns. Tax season is increasingly a digital season. Here at Bing Ads, we've seen firsthand the growing tendenc [...]

4 Trends Paid Search Marketers Must Address In 2014: Audience, Relevance, Social & Mobile

Mobile Devices Upon revisiting last year's post on this topic, a couple of our bold predictions flopped and a couple turned out to be more reality than fantasy. Though we didn't see Apple monetize the search results served up by Siri, we did see ad formats evolve to increase relevance and user engagement. The inclusion of ad extensions as a factor in ad ranking and the expansion of Product Listing Ads (PLAs) to show on smartphone devices were less a result of explicit user feedback, as we had predicted, but more based on user behavior. Nonetheless, the changes have spawned a richer and more engaging ad ex [...]

Google Testing Ads On The Knowledge Graph

knowledge-graph Google is testing showing ads on the Knowledge Graph. Gianluca Fiorelli from Spain shared a screen shot of the ad format on Twitter. The new ad format seems to be a local ad that shows local dealers specifically for the new car knowledge graph format. Here is a picture showing local dealers that may sell this car: The knowledge graph is returned for a query on [2014 chevrolet camaro]. I personally do not see the ad myself but it is location specific. The ad is indeed relevant and useful for some searchers. This is just the beginning of seeing ads directly in the Knowledge Gr [...]

Google Adds Cars To Knowledge Graph

knowledge-graph Google announced on Google+ that they have expanded the knowledge graph to include automobile/car information. So if you search for [2014 Honda Accord] or [2014 Mazda3] or other car make and models, you will see information about that car on the right hand side panel's knowledge graph box. The information includes the name of the car, type of car, image of the car, the make, price, miles per gallon, engine sizes, other models, other configurations with a link to other searches related to it. Here is a picture: Then when you click on other cars in the "people also search for" you g [...]

Testing, Testing, Testing: A Recap Of Google’s Latest Search Tests

science-experiment-test-featured Google is known to run hundreds of experiments a year and often we pick up on some of those experiments and report back on them over here. Many of those experiments have to do with the user interface and how Google makes small tweaks to the layout, design, fonts and colors to see what type of impact it has on the searcher. Many of these tests we capture and categorize in the Google user interface section. There is also an excellent new resource for tracking every minor change Google tests, it is at allgoogletesting.blogspot.com. That being said, I wanted to share a screen shot Dr. Peter [...]

Google’s Yellow “Ad” Icons Test Appears To Be Expanding

adwords-mobile-ad-icon It appears Google has been rapidly expanding their new yellow ad label found on their search ads over the past week. Google began testing these yellow ad labels on mobile search and then expanded the test to the UK and beyond. Now, it seems as if we are receiving two to three emails per day from readers saying they are seeing the new yellow ad label in the search results. Here is a picture: If I had to guess, this is the new AdWords ad format that will be rolling out officially on both desktop and mobile search results in the next couple weeks. Gathering New Keyword Insights In A (Not Provided) World

ML-10-2013-2 Not Provided is all anyone is talking about these days -- with good reason. Holding data hostage and forcing users to buy ads to see it is pretty dirty pool, in my opinion. Most of my clients cannot lay out the money just to grab data, so we've had to come up with some creative ways to see information at a keyword level. I've shared previously how using a "Not Provided Filter" can give you insights into landing pages that are triggered by a keyword search. If you know the landing page, you can extrapolate and "guess" what the keywords might be. This is great if you have time to really loo [...]

Google Quietly Brings Back RSS Feed Option To Google Alerts

google-alerts The Next Web reports Google has quietly added back the RSS Feed option to Google Alerts. I've confirmed the RSS Feed option has indeed returned at google.com/alerts. In early July, Google quietly dropped RSS delivery as an option for Google Alerts. I lost tons of the alerts I've set up, however, they still seemed to work with Feedly, when I transitioned from Google Reader after Google Reader closed. Here is a picture of the need "Feed" option within Google Alerts: As you can see, you have the option within "deliver to" to deliver the alert to a feed. After you click "create a [...]

SEM For B2B Companies That See No Value In Search

b2b branding site conversion funnel Not every company sees the value of SEM in the B2B space. Companies that only do two or three deals per year based solely on lead nurturing will have no need to rank for keywords or for building site traffic. Selling any website services outside of design to these high-ticket companies may seem impossible because they only use the site for branding purposes. But there are some SEM tactics that are worth selling. There is still a need for analytics, SEO and conversion optimization for these types of clients; however, the strategy is completely different from normal SEM tactics because users [...]

Search Privacy Low On List Of Privacy Concerns For US Internet Users

search privacy Despite the fact that search history can be so revealing about people's desires and interests, a new survey of US internet users finds that concern over search privacy -- while significant -- still ranks far behind other online privacy issues. The survey by the Pew Research Center covered 1,000 adults in the US, was conducted last month and asked a wide-range of questions about online privacy. You can read it here, and also see our coverage on Marketing Land: Report: Almost 90 Percent Concerned About Online Privacy & Trying To Avoid Advertisers. One part asked people to rank types o [...]

Live @ SMX East: Google Enhanced Campaigns – What We’ve Learned So Far

east13_spotlight Earlier this year, Google announced Enhanced Campaigns, a significant update to AdWords, designed to simplify campaign management across multiple devices and to increase adoption rates of mobile advertising among small and medium sized businesses. And by the way, the new program was mandatory - all advertisers would be forced to change over to Enhanced Campaigns sometime during the summer, whether they wanted to or not. The response among advertisers was all over the map. Some welcomed the streamlined functionality, improved extensions and targeting capabilities, and the ability to more eas [...]

Google Keyword Tool Is Officially Dead, Keyword Planner Gets Lukewarm Welcome

google-keyword-tool-dead-featured Lukewarm may be overstating it. If Twitter sentiment is any gauge, the SEM world has not exactly embraced Google's new Keyword Planner, which as of yesterday officially replaces the Keyword Tool.  Looking at tweets over the past 7 days, "Keyword Tool" yields a sentiment score of 59 on Topsy.com compared to just 45 for "Keyword Planner." https://twitter.com/inkovic/status/372183942637424640 Unlike the Keyword Tool, used by SEOs and PPC managers alike, users must login to an AdWords account to access the Planner. That's just one of the grumbles heard around the Internet about the Keyword [...]
