Facebook To Retire “Who Can Look Up My Timeline By Name?” Search Setting For All Users

facebook-people-featured As of today, Facebook announced that it is completing the removal of its "Who can look up my timeline by name?" search setting. Users who still have access to it will begin seeing a reminder below their Facebook search bar that the setting is being retired. Last December, Facebook announced it was replacing the search setting with new controls for users to manage their content. According to Facebook, the "Who can look up my timeline by name?" setting was automatically retired for users who were no longer taking advantage of it, with the "small percentage of people" still using the search se [...]

Facebook Now Lets You Search Your Posts & Status Updates In Graph Search

facebook-graph-search-featured Facebook announced the launch of searching your posts and status updates within graph search. Facebook said, "Today, Graph Search will include posts and status updates." With this, you "will be able to search for status updates, photo captions, check-ins and comments to find things shared with you." I personally tried this, and it is not active for me yet: But when it does become available, you can search for topics like [Posts about Dancing with the Stars by my friends] and you'd see this: Other search commands that let you search Facebook posts and status updates include: [...]

Google Launches Hashtag Search, Shows Google+ Posts On Search Results Page

Google logo The integration of Google+ across Google properties continues in a big way today with the launch of hashtag search. Simply put, if you search Google for a hashtag, you might see Google+ posts using that hashtag to the right of the regular search results. Google's Zaheed Sabur announced the new feature this morning on Google+, saying that it's available initially for English language searches on both Google.com and Google.ca. The only posts that will show up on Google searches are those that were shared publicly, or shared with you (if you're a Google+ user). Clicking on one of the Goo [...]

Yahoo Updates Answers For Social And SEO Value

yahoo-answers-questions-featured It's amazing to me that it took Yahoo so long to update its Answers property. Once a thriving Q&A network and social search site, Yahoo really let Answers go to seed. However the company announced yesterday that it was rolling out a new user-experience including mobile optimization. Even in its dilapidated state, Yahoo Answers is the most successful "help engine" or Q&A site on the web (don't tell me it's Quora). Answers was the site that long ago vanquished Google's paid answers property. But the years of product and management turmoil at Yahoo caused tremendous neglect of Answe [...]

Topsy Becomes Definitive Twitter Search Engine

Topsy-Plain-Logo Social search and analytics provider Topsy announced that users can now search its index for every single tweet ever published since Twitter's inception in 2006. This capability is very useful and likely makes Topsy an acquisition target (probably by Twitter). According to the site, there are now more than 540 billion tweets in its index. Topsy has become a social analytics service in addition to being a "social search engine." Topsy has the added distinction of being essentially the lone survivor among a group of "real-time" search sites that emerged in 2008 - 2010, including Colle [...]

Twitter Now Shows Protected Tweets In Its Search Results, But Not All Can See Them

twitter-search-2012 Twitter has made a small change in how it handles protected tweets in its search results. The company tweeted the news that some protected tweets will now be visible in search results -- but they'll only be visible to the user who has the protected account, and to that user's followers. Prior to this change, no tweets from protected accounts showed up in Twitter's search results. Even if a private account let you see its tweets, you couldn't find those tweets in Twitter's search results. Of course, some accounts switch back and forth from private to public and vice versa. Here's how t [...]

Shatner’s Tweet Hints That He May Like Bing Just As Much As Bing Likes Captain Kirk

bing-startrek In a brief exchange on Twitter yesterday evening, the original Captain Kirk gave Bing a shout-out, recommending the Microsoft search engine could possibly enlighten a fellow Twitter user. William Shatner responded "I hear Google pr Bing helps with that problem" after @Andypops1 tweeted on Shatner's feed, "I still have no idea what spumoni is." Assuming the "pr" in Shatner's tweet was a typo, it appears Shatner is recommending Google or Bing to find answers online. While it would have been a stronger recommendation without the Google reference, it's worth noting that the man who overcame [...]

SMX East Keynote: Twitter VP Richard Alfonsi On “Now” Moments & The Conversation

RichardAlfonsi405vert On Twitter, there are many different "conversations" happening simultaneously.
