Facebook: No Sense “To Even Begin To Think About Doing Web Search” Now

facebook-search-featured Facebook is working on improving its search engine, but a company executive says it doesn't make sense "to even begin to think about doing web search" right now. Lars Rasmussen, Director of Engineering at Facebook, made the comments in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. He told the paper that he's "working on something very specific which is super exciting," and admitted that Facebook search "could be a lot better." But, he says, the speculation about Facebook getting into web search is premature. "There are occasional articles out there about how people either speculate ab [...]

Report: Microsoft Did Shop Bing To Facebook

bing-sale-offer-featured You know that rumor about Microsoft shopping Bing to Facebook? It sparked lots of speculation about whether that would be a good move for both companies. Turns out it did happen, according to a report in the New York Times citing executives who made overtures to Facebook on behalf of Microsoft -- but without the effort being sanctioned by CEO Steve Ballmer. This happened more than a year ago, according to the report. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg declined to discuss the matter, telling those Microsoft executives that the company had too much else to focus on. Neither Google nor Facebook spok [...]

How “Facebook Search” Could Help Google Escape The Antitrust Noose

Screen shot 2012-04-08 at 8.05.32 AM Last week in the Chicago Tribune former judge and scholar Robert Bork (who is also a Google advisor) penned an opinion column arguing that by the accepted standards of antitrust law Google has done nothing legally wrong. Bork says, "There is extraordinary competition in the search engine business. Look at the proliferation of what are called vertical search sites that specialize in particular products or services, such as Amazon, Expedia, Kayak and hundreds of others." Who Competes with Google? This question of who competes with Google -- and is the market in fact competitive -- is central t [...]

How Serious Is Facebook About Search?

facebook-search-featured An article in BusinessWeek suggests that Facebook is planning a deeper push into search. Will that be limited to improving search for the site -- or will it be something more comprehensive? It's clear that Facebook needs better internal search. Right now the search function at the top of the page is not very useful. Improving Facebook site search seems to be the first objective of an internal team, led by former Googler Lars Rasmussen, according to BusinessWeek; Searching the social network could get a lot better in the near future. About two dozen Facebook engineers, led by a former Goog [...]

How People Power (& Personalize) Bing’s Social Search

The good folks over at Stone Temple Consulting released an in-depth interview with Bing's Principal Group Program Manager for Bing Social Search, Paul Yiu.  The Bing social search team integrates social content and indicators into the search results to add both personalization and relevance to the search results.  Bing currently ties in data from both Facebook and Twitter to improve the overall quality of the results.  In contrast, Google only ties Google+ data into their search results pages. Eric Enge performed the interview for Stone Temple and didn't pull any punches on social indica [...]

10 Optimization Secrets To Drive More Mobile Traffic From Facebook

facebook-mobile-featured One of the staggering facts in Facebook's public filing last month was that 50% of their traffic is driven by mobile devices. That's about 5x more than the average website. Perhaps even more staggering: the growth rate of their mobile traffic actually exceeded their US growth rate last year (17% vs 16%). With US smartphone penetration now past 50% (likely to reach 65% by year-end), mobile devices are simply how your Facebook profile is consumed! Meanwhile, for most of the 4 million businesses with Facebook Page profiles, Facebook's mobile-friendly version acts as the only "mobile [...]

Bing Posts To Facebook Timeline If You Use New “Linked Pages”

(44) Greg Sterling Yesterday, Bing rolled out a new "Linked Pages" feature that looks interesting. But using the feature gives Bing permission to post to Facebook on your behalf. That's a lot of permission that seems necessary only as a way for Bing to pimp itself. It also means your friends might soon be posting Linked Pages to your Facebook Timeline. How Linked Pages Look With Linked Pages, you can add pages that will appear in association with your name or those of your friends, when those pages are viewed by you or others you are friends with on Facebook. For example, here's how my page now looks, in a sea [...]

Under Threat Of Being Blocked Google, Facebook Comply With India’s New Internet Censorship Rules

After China and the US, India is the third largest internet market in the world. But India has philosophically aligned itself more with China in pursuing a policy of censorship toward publication of content deemed "offensive" or "objectionable" by individuals, groups or the government. A recently enacted law seeks to remove all such content from the internet in India. Facebook, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft were sued under the law and had been arguing in Indian court that it was all but impossible for them to comply as a practical matter. The law makes online publishers potentially liable for [...]

A Proposal For Social Network Détente

google-twitter-facebook-radar-featured For the past two weeks, I feel like I've been witnessing some type of Cuban Missile Crisis going on between Google, Twitter and Facebook. I'd like to suggest some ways that social-nuclear war might be averted. Beyond Blame, Believing In Cooperation Let's set aside blame, because blame isn't going to move anything forward. Let's also assume that all the players can be taken to some degree at their word, that they do indeed want to work together in some ways. What does everyone want? The Wants & A Game Changer Google has wanted its own social graph for some time. By social graph, I [...]

“Don’t Be Evil” Tool — Backed By Facebook & Twitter — Shows Google’s “Search Plus Your World” Can Go Beyond Google+

what google should be I've written that Google has plenty of public data to allow parts its new Search Plus Your World feature to be inclusive of rival social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Now, those networks are proving that true, through a new "Don't Be Evil" tool that lets anyone leverage Google's own results to see this. The tool -- a bookmarklet that works in your browser -- changes three parts of Search Plus Your World that currently shows information only from Google Plus. These are: People & Pages results Google+ Sitelinks Google+ Suggestions In Autocomplete The tool can be found on [...]

Report: Social Media Spending Threatens To Overtake Paid Search Among SMBs

social-media-adoption-featured Borrell Associates has come out with an extensive new report about small business ("SMBs") and social media adoption. It contains forecasts and spending estimates as well as other data about SMB usage of social media as a marketing tool. There's a great deal of data already in the market about SMB adoption of social media. What they show is that between 45 percent and 70 percent of SMBs say they already have a presence on social media sites (mostly Facebook). Borrell reports that between 60 and 64 percent of SMBs have a formal presence on social media sites. An earlier 2011 study by [...]

Free Speech Battle In India: Google, Facebook Summoned By Court Over “Inflammatory Images”

According to a report from Chinese news agency Xinhua, a judge in India has ordered a broad range of online companies, including Google, Facebook and Yahoo, to "delete 'inflammatory' images of religious figures" from their sites. Though not identified in news reports the images were deemed offensive or blasphemous under a sweeping law enacted earlier this year aimed at blocking or removing "offensive" or "objectionable" content from the internet in India. In case the problem with implementation of a law against "objectionable" content isn't self-evident its provisions are vague and scope [...]

Search Trumps Social For Local Business Information

search-globe-websites-featured The internet and search engines in particular are the top sources for information about local businesses, according to a new survey from the Pew Internet & American Life Foundation. That's not really a surprise. But what's interesting perhaps is how many people rely on print newspapers and how few seem to rely on social media for local information, according to the survey data. Pew surveyed just over 1,000 US adults by telephone in January, 2011. What it found was that 55 percent of people "say they get news and information about local restaurants, bars, and clubs" and 60 percent "say t [...]

Facebook Downplays Significance Of FTC Privacy Settlement

facebook-logo Facebook and the US Federal Trade Commission announced their formal privacy settlement today. Facebook and the federal agency each put their spin on it, with Facebook saying it was very similar to "agreements" previously reached with Google and Twitter: Recently, the US Federal Trade Commission established agreements with Google and Twitter that are helping to shape new privacy standards for our industry. Today, the FTC announced a similar agreement with Facebook. These agreements create a framework for how companies should approach privacy in the United States and around the world. For Fa [...]

New European Law ‘Targets’ Personalized Ad Targeting On Facebook

A new directive by the European Commission may stop advertisers from leveraging users's information when advertising on Facebook.  The Telgraph reports that the EC is looking into the way that Facebook "eavesdrops" on users and how personal data is made available for ad targeting.  This new legislation will be introduced in January and will be applicable to all action taken on Facebook, even though most information is stored on U.S. based computers. The new laws would require that users would need to approve more than the standard 4,000 word contract if their personal information was [...]

Google+: Brands Rush In Where Consumers Fear To Tread

Screen shot 2011-11-18 at 5.59.35 AM Earlier this week BrightEdge released data on early adoption of Google+ pages by brands. It also offered a comparison with Facebook. The SEO firm said that 61 percent of the top 100 brands in the US have Google+ Pages, in the little over a week since the doors were officially opened. By contrast 93 percent of that same top 100 have Facebook pages. The Google+ adoption numbers are impressive. Indeed, given the possibility that Google+ may turn into a major new social platform brands want to quickly establish themselves on it. So far, however, there isn’t that much follower action, accordin [...]

Now It’s Facebook’s Turn For 20 Years Of FTC Privacy Audits

facebook-welcome-featured According to the New York Times and Wall Street Journal the world's largest social network is nearing a settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that will subject the company to 20 years of "privacy audits." A nearly identical punishment was imposed earlier this year on Google over "deceptive privacy practices in Google’s rollout of its Buzz social network." The complaint against Facebook stems from sweeping changes to privacy settings in 2009. Several privacy advocacy groups including EPIC complained to the FTC about Facebook's actions, which made much of users' profile data [...]

Asked to reflect on the cultural differences between Google and Facebook, current Facebook COO and former Googler Sheryl Sandberg told Charlie Rose that "Google is fundamentally about algorithms and machine learning . . . Larry Page Ousts Mark Zuckerberg As Most Popular On Google+

Google-Plus-Logo It looks like adding a suggested user list to Google+ has finally paid off in solving its "Mark Zuckerberg problem."
