Announced in February 2013, Enhanced Campaigns for AdWords is a next-generation ad system that is especially noteworthy for eliminating mobile bidding options. The articles below have more about the new system.

Smart Geographic Segmentation & Bidding With Enhanced Campaigns

New PPC Best Practices In An Enhanced Campaign World was one of SMX Advanced Seattle's most engaging sessions; and, as a speaker, I have received a great deal of feedback and questions about those bid location modifiers. As it turns out, location bid modifiers are one of the (only) benefits of upgrading to enhanced campaigns, as they can be applied by location in a very granular and simple way. I thought I'd recap a couple of thoughts about geo-segmentation and location bid modifiers. Segmenting Your Paid Search Account By Geography The segmentation tips below can help improve the perform [...]

Should You Create Ad Group Sitelinks in Enhanced Campaigns?

One of the nicest things about AdWords Enhanced Campaigns is that you can now control sitelinks at the campaign or the ad group level. From a feature  standpoint, this sounds great. However, when you start considering the execution phase of creating sitelinks for every single ad group, the task can suddenly seem quite daunting. First, we'll cover how sitelinks work. Then, we'll need to determine whether or not we should upgrade our ad groups; and if so, create a priority order. About Sitelinks Sitelinks allow you to add additional information below the ad. Each sitelink can also be cu [...]

AdWords Image Extensions: Early Reactions & In-The-Wild Examples

adwords-images-photos-featured The PPC world is abuzz over the news that Google opened its beta for image extensions, which allow AdWords advertisers to include images with their text ads. In these very early days, PPC managers that have had campaigns in the beta are in experimental mode, while others are eager to get their accounts into the beta. We asked several marketers for their thoughts on the new feature and followed up with Google to get some more details. Bringing A Branding Flair To DR Below is capture of an ad with image extensions. The images have more of an editorial feel than the head-on product shots used i [...]

Optimizing Google Enhanced Campaigns: Success Starts At Migration

In February of this year, Google made headlines with its launch of enhanced campaigns. Since the initial outpouring of both interest and concern, advertisers have been seeking to understand how enhanced campaigns will not only reshape their campaign structures and strategies, but also how this will impact their ability to acquire revenue. With the July 22, 2013 migration deadline fast approaching, the attention has shifted from "why" to "how." How do search marketers efficiently migrate to enhanced campaigns and optimize them to ensure post-migration success? During this critical time pe [...]

Bing Ads Will Copycat Google AdWords Enhanced Campaigns With New Bid Adjustments

bing-ads-featured It shouldn't come as a surprise that Microsoft is adjusting the Bing Ads platform to play nicely with AdWords enhanced campaigns. The company said they would be making changes back in early April, and now they are providing specifics. Bing Ads has supported incremental bidding by geo-location, gender, age, day of the week or time of day for several years now. Today, Microsoft announced changes that bring those features in line with the functionality of bid adjustments in enhanced campaigns. The reality is, if advertisers can't easily import their AdWords campaigns, they are much less [...]

Google AdWords Image Extensions Now In Beta

adwords-images-photos-featured Today, Google has announced the official beta for Image Extensions in AdWords. The image extension has been spotted here and there in the wild over the past couple of months. It allows AdWords advertisers to display relevant images with text ads. Google will certainly be experimenting with the visual display, but here is a current example. Google says that one in six searches on Google provides results with visual content. Now, text ads will have the flexibility to reflect the growing importance of image content across the Web. Until now, product image ads were the only way to include im [...]

Will Enhanced Campaigns Drive Mobile CPCs Down?

google-adwords-square-logo There are two pieces of conventional wisdom surrounding Google's Enhanced Campaigns that seem to get tossed around a lot without much thought or examination. The first is that this new campaign model will make it easier for small advertisers to get into the mobile advertising game. The second related piece is that Enhanced Campaigns will likely lead to higher mobile CPCs and that this is one of Google's primary motivations for changing its model. I have personally been guilty of echoing both of these sentiments to varying degrees -- but as we get closer to the mandatory transition in Jul [...]

Welcome To The Mobile Era Of Search

It’s rare when you can pinpoint the moment of a major game changer for an industry to a single day. Usually, these shifts happen over time; and then one day, you look back and realize how momentous a particular event really was. For paid search, there have been many catalysts that have accelerated the industry, most of which were not even specifically search related. For example, the widespread availability of consumer-priced, high-speed Internet access  took years to mature and was the result of multiple global telecoms working in parallel. This development led to more daily time spe [...]

The new Bid strategies tool will be located in Shared Library. You can create a flexible bid strategy and then apply it to specific keywords, ad groups, and campaigns. Performance metrics by bidding strategy will be available in Bidding strategies. There will be four types of flexible bid strategies available when th [...]

Google Testing Ads In New Google Maps, Pushes AdWords Location Extensions

google-adwords-local-map-featured If you needed another reason to get your location extensions set up in AdWords, Google has announced its testing new ads in the new Google Maps. AdWords search ads set with location extensions can appear directly below the search box and on the map itself. Ads without location extensions can appear below the search box only and not on the map. The screenshot below shows a Rent-a-champ Cars ad below the search box and an "ad", or sponsored listing, on the map, indicated by a red icon with a white square in it. Google announced the new version of Google Maps at the company's annua [...]

Google: Nearly 2 Million AdWords Campaigns Are Now Enhanced, Early Results Are In

google-adwords-square-logo In an update on the early progress of the transition to enhanced campaigns last night, Sridhar Ramaswamy, SVP, Ads and Commerce at Google -- and the lead on enhanced campaigns -- said that close to two million campaigns have been set to enhanced. That's up from 1.5 million Google quoted on the first quarter earnings call on April 18. Results From Early Adopters Based on positive case studies from clothing retailer American Apparel, financial services provider Woodbridge Structured Funding, and an unnamed luxury shopping brand among others, Ramaswamy says early adopters of enhanced campaig [...]

How To Conduct Ad Tests In Enhanced Campaigns

Enhanced campaigns have brought about many changes to AdWords. One of the biggest changes yet to be discussed is the fact that your ad testing methods will have to change. One of the “features” of enhanced campaigns is that your campaign can now run on desktops and mobile devices with different CPCs that are controlled by bid modifiers. However, since your ads can be run on multiple devices at the same time, you need to test your ad metrics by device. This can easily be accomplished with device preference and Excel filters. First, let’s discuss why this change needs to occur, and t [...]

AdWords Ad Group Mobile Bid Adjustments Roll-Out Starts Today

google-adwords-square-logo Google announced that ad group-level mobile bid adjustments will start rolling out today and continue over the next couple of weeks in the Web UI. The added feature went live in the AdWords API last week. Like the elusive Keyword Planner that is rolling out now, ad group mobile bid adjustments are only available in a small number of accounts today. So, be patient and remember it could take two weeks or so to be active in your account. Google made the announcement along with the introduction of the 'Set bid adjustment' button to make bulk edits to location and daypart bid adjustments. [...]

Enhanced Campaigns: New ‘Set Bid Adjustment’ Button Added For Bulk Edits

To make multiple bid adjustments for locations and dayparts without having to click into each target individually, Google has added a new "Set bid adjustments" button to the Web UI. The button is available when you are in the "All online campaigns" view, as well; so, you can make bulk changes across multiple campaigns. [...]

AdWords Campaigns That Don’t Use Advanced Settings Will Be Migrated To Standard Type Campaigns

google-adwords-numbers-featured Over the next few weeks, Google will be migrating AdWords campaigns that don't use any advanced features from "All Features" to "Standard" type campaigns. The change applies only to "Search Network Only" and "Search and Display Networks" campaigns. When Google updated the AdWords campaign setup back in June 2012 to include the "Standard" and "All Features" options, existing campaigns were automatically rolled over to "All Features". In Legacy campaigns, you can still see "not recommended" noted in red next to the Standard option. Now, ahead of the enhanced campaigns switch-over in Ju [...]

Enhanced Campaigns: Ad Group Mobile Bid Adjustments Now In AdWords API

google-adwords-square-logo The roll-out has begun. Earlier this month Google said it would be adding ad group-level mobile bid adjustments to enhanced campaigns. As of yesterday, ad group mobile bid adjustments are available through the AdWords API. The new feature is accessible from all current versions of the API with the new AdGroupBidModifierService. Google has updated the AdWords API guide to include technical aspects of the new release. The addition of ad group-level mobile bids will allow advertisers to have more granular control within their campaigns. Until now mobile bids could only be set and adjusted a [...]
