Google Operating System posted that the Google Dictionary has switched content providers.

Google used Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner’s English Dictionary in the past but today they are now using Oxford Pocket Dictionary of Current English. What is the difference? Well, here are two words with different explanations:

Collins: “If you call someone a swot, you disapprove of the fact that they study extremely hard and are not interested in other things.”

Oxford: “A person who studies hard, esp. one regarded as spending too much time studying.”

Compare other words yourself between Collins and Oxford.

Google announced they have redesigned and enhanced their dictionary results.

Google said you no longer have to type define or what is prior to your search to trigger a dictionary. Google added “implicit triggering” of the dictionary result, so for example, a search on [stupendous] shows a dictionary result at the top of the page:

The dictionary result also includes speech and pronunciation information and additional dictionary links to third-party sites. Plus, Google pushed this out to all global English users. There are more changed coming, including improvements to the mobile experience.
