Activity Streams & Other Social Nuggets From Leaked Google Video

A new video, apparently leaked and intended to orient new Googlers about the Google Reader application, has shed some new light on Google's plans in the feed and social space, as well as providing some stats on Google Reader itself. Leaked Google Video Discusses Google Reader, Social Efforts from Google Blogoscoped is an excellent, detailed rundown on the video, worth checking out. The video itself has now been pulled, though the chatter about it continues. Below, what I found most interesting from the summary and some observations ranging from "Activity Streams" of social activity o [...]

Facebook Opens Profiles To Tap Into Google Traffic, While Google Grabs Facebook’s News Feed Idea

Google is getting a bit more like Facebook by enabling a Facebook-style news feed within its Orkut social networking site, while the king of the walled gardens Facebook acknowledges in actions (rather than words) that it really can't go it alone without search engines like Google, as it prepares to let crawlers into its public user profiles. Actually, Facebook is telling its users that existing profiles already accessible to search engines will be exposed even more. Below, more on the moves, with lots of screenshots and explanations. Facebook Says Public Listings To Be Made Crawlable Public [...]

Brazil Says Google Still Not Cooperating Over Illegal Orkut Activities

Brazilian prosecutors say Google has not provided Orkut user information regarding crimes from the Associated Press reports that Brazilian authorities say that Google Brazil is still not complying with requests to hand over information on those using Orkut for illegal activities. Some use Orkut to help spread child pornography and hate speech. Prosecutor Sergio Gardenghi Suiama said: In some cases Google has not even preserved the evidence we need to file charges against the pedophiles that use the Internet to spread their ideas. Google's attitude is ensuring the impunity of pedophiles an [...]

Google’s Orkut Gets Polls; Answers Next?

The wisdom of orkut from the Official Google Blog covers how Google's social networking site Orkut now allows people to post polls. No big deal? Perhaps not. But it also makes me wonder if it's a first step toward trying to give Orkut an answer search roll for Google. Yahoo Answers -- where a community provides answers to each other -- continues to gain steam. Yahoo recently added social networking features to Yahoo Answers, and LinkedIn added LinkedIn Answers to its own social networking service back in January. Google had its own Google Answers service, of course. That was a fee-based [...]

Google Fensi: Google’s Asian Social Networking Site?

Over the past day or so, there has been a lot of discussion about something named "Google Fensi." Google Operating Systems first posted about it linking to this screen capture. Garett Rogers then dug deeper to explain it was found within the Google in Your Language page, but he isn't sure if it is a social networking site, since Google already has Orkut. Garett tells us that a few months ago he received a tip from a Google Tester that Google is developing a "MySpace meets Microsoft Live" type of application - so maybe this is it? Philipp Lenssen commented at Google Operating Systems that " [...]

Google To Test SMS Feature In Orkut Brazil

The Google Blog announced that Google will be launching a new feature for Orkut users that use Claro as their mobile provider in Brazil. The feature will enable users of Orkut to SMS message their Orkut friends from their mobile phones. The details on exactly how this is done, is not exactly clear. But if you do receive a "scrap" message from a friend and it has the word "mobile" next to the friend's name, then it was sent via mobile phone (via Orkut help). [...]
