Stat Rant: Does Facebook Trump Google For News & Can’t We Measure Twitter Correctly?

Earlier this week, Hitwise put out stats suggesting that Facebook is beating Google and Twitter when it comes to driving traffic to news sites. I dug a little deeper, and I beg to differ. Along the way, some pokes at the need to more digging into stats in general. The Hitwise blog post reported that Twitter accounted for only 0.14% of "upstream" visits to the "News & Media" sites category last week, far beyond similar stats for Facebook and Google. Here are all of them compared, based on that blog post: Facebook: 3.64%, the 3rd biggest source of visits to News & Media sites Go [...]

Bing Hits All-Time High Market Share: Nielsen

The latest search market share numbers from Nielsen are out, and it's more good news for the folks in Redmond. Nielsen says Bing's market share in February was 12.5%, an all-time high that continues Bing's overall growth since it launched last year. That figure represents a 15% increase from its January market share. It's also two solid months of growth for Bing after a dip in December. Meanwhile, Google has seen two straight months of falling market share. Those are Nielsen's February numbers above. Below is a chart showing Nielsen's numbers over the past four months. Lest a [...]

Facebook Passes Google (Again) As Most-Visited US Site: Hitwise

Facebook.com was the most-visited web site in the U.S. last week, surpassing even Google.com. And this is not the first time it's happened. According to Experian Hitwise, Facebook.com received 7.07% of all internet visits during the week that ended on March 13th, with Google getting 7.03%. This compares visits between the two main domains -- Facebook.com and Google.com. When this first happened over the holidays, we explained that the numbers don't include other Google properties like Google News. In addition to the holiday numbers, Hitwise also says Facebook.com surpassed Google [...]

Google, Yahoo & Portals Are Top Online News Sources: Study

Major news portals -- like Yahoo News, Google News, AOL, and Topix -- are the most commonly used online news sources, beating out the web sites of major news outlets like CNN, CBS, and the New York Times. That's according to the the State of the Media report issued tonight by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism. The study surveyed more than 2,200 online news consumers between December 28, 2009, and January 19, 2010, and found that more than half of online news readers use a major news portal on a typical day, and among younger news consumers (aged 18-29), more tha [...]

Bing’s Market Share Up For Third Straight Month: Hitwise

Just last week at SMX West, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said his short-term goal for Bing is to gain a point here or a tenth there -- to chip away and slowly increase its share of the search market. The latest numbers from Experian Hitwise show that Bing is doing exactly that. Hitwise shows Bing gaining share for the third straight month, and its 9.7% share of searches in February was up 4% over its January numbers. For the month, Google dropped slightly and Yahoo remained static. That's two consecutive months of slight drops for Google, according to the Hitwise numbers. Greg Ster [...]
