Microsoft’s SMX Advanced Keynote: Cortana Makes People More Likely To Search

cortana-600px We're ready to get started on day two of SMX Advanced, and today's opening keynote promises to talk about the future of search. Microsoft's Marcus Ash (Group Program Manager for Windows Phone) and Rob Chambers (Group Program Manager, Applications and Services Group) will be here to talk about Cortana, the company's recently launched virtual assistant that many have called Microsoft's version of Apple's Siri and Google Now. Cortana, like those other platforms, aims to provide answers, search results and assistance without a traditional search query. Together, products like these are [...]

Search Engine Land's founding editor, Danny Sullivan, will be sitting down for a lengthy chat with Matt Cutts, the head of Google's webspam team. The session is due to begin at 5:00 pm, and I'll be liveblogging it right here as fast as I can. Growth Of Mobile Search “Like Seeing My Second Child Grow” Says Google Search Chief At #SXSW

Amit Singhal The growth of mobile search is like seeing a second child grow up. SEO isn't bull. The knowledge graph, speech recognition and natural language are search's biggest challenges. And, he really, really likes Star Trek. That's just some of what the head of Google's search efforts, Amit Singhal, shared when talking at SXSW today. Singhal is senior vice president and a Google Fellow who oversees Google Search. He spoke during the "The Future of Google Search in a Mobile World" keynote at the SXSW conference in Austin today. The session didn't stick just to mobile search -- that was pro [...]

Search Convergence In SF: Matt Cutts, Danny Sullivan, Mike Grehan & Brett Tabke

It might be more than foggy in San Francisco this morning, as Brett Tabke of said after I took this picture, "that was a twilight zone moment for me". [caption id="attachment_161953" align="aligncenter" width="300"] A meeting of the search conferences with Matt Cutts[/caption] It must have been interesting feeling for him then about 10 minutes later when Mike Grehan invited him and Danny Sullivan on stage to have an impromptu conversation with Google's Matt Cutts at SES SF. Mike Grehan jovially greeted the early rising crowd (including me... go me!!) for a special s [...]

Matt Cutts On Penalties Vs. Algorithm Changes, A Disavow-This-Link Tool & More

cutts-sullivan Is it a penalty? Or is it just a change to Google's algorithm? That's been one of the hot topics in search marketing in recent months thanks to the Panda and Penguin updates, and it was one of the topics of discussion tonight at our SMX Advanced conference in Seattle. During the annual "You & A with Matt Cutts" keynote session, Google's web spam chief told Search Engine Land Editor-In-Chief Danny Sullivan that Google's definition of a "penalty" is when manual action is taken against a site -- and that Google doesn't use the term "penalty" as much as they say "manual action." Cutts went [...]

F8: Live Blogging The Keynote (Timeline + Ticker)

Screen shot 2011-09-22 at 11.50.54 AM I'm sitting in the large hall in the SF Concourse awaiting the F8 keynote from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, now a wealthier man (on paper) than Google co-founders Brin and Page. We expect a series of announcements around music and movies but there will be a ton of stats about Facebook usage and growth. If you want to see the live stream you can watch it here. SNL's comedian Andy Samberg is now on stage doing his impersonation of Mark Zuckerberg. Funny. He's doing a stand-up routine lampooning Zuckerberg's discussion of sharing and engagement. Now he's making masturbation jokes ("sometim [...]

OK, it's round two. And I can tell you no, don't expect much. How do you clear the press table when Google competitors are about to testify at a Senate hearing? Have Eric Schmidt do a post-game recap in the hearing room hallway. He's done, I'm back, will catch up as best I can. NOTE: Our follow-up article, which covers the entire hearing with highlights and without live blogging typos is now available: Google Hearings: The Post-Game Show. Live Blog: Google’s Eric Schmidt At The US Senate Hearing

Today's the day. Google chairman Eric Schmidt is being called on the carpet in front of a US Senate subcommittee, to talk about whether his company is a monopolistic orge. I'm here, live blogging. Fun starts at 2pm ET. NOTE: Our follow-up article, which covers the entire hearing with highlights and without live blogging typos is now available: Google Hearings: The Post-Game Show. You can also continue on with the live blogging, below. Here's a quick note. I barely made it in, went to the wrong place, long story, you don't need all that. But I'm playing so serious catch-up. So cut me some sla [...]

Live Blog: “Which Way Google?” At SMX East

Which Way Google Welcome! It's the "Which Way Google?" panel here at SMX East. We've got a great panel -- Jeff Jarvis, Steven Levy and Marc Rotenberg -- set to cover a range of issues. Let's live blog. This is new for me -- I never live blog at my own conferences. But I saw the queen of live blogging, Lisa Barone, sitting there ready to go and couldn't resist trying it myself. Link to her live blogging later. More with the panel. Jeff Jarvis, professor at CUNY, author of What Would Google Do and new book Private Parts coming up. Steven Levy, most recently author of In The Plex (get it!). Marc Rotenberg, [...]

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo’s “State Of The Union” Address

11 - 1 100 million active users. 1 billion tweets every seven days. Plans to grow the ad business. These stats and facts are part of a "State Of The Twitter" talk Twitter CEO Dick Costolo gave to the press today. Live blogging below! Dick arrives. Nothing big, he says. "I just wanted to give you a state of the union on the business." He's naming some of the people who have come on to help build the business. Jack Dorsey among those who came back in. "He speaks with the fluency of the inventor of the product," which is good to have when you have contention between groups in the company. "If y [...]

SMX Advanced Liveblog: Social Data & Search With Bing’s Stefan Weitz

bing-weitz Day two of our SMX Advanced conference is set to begin shortly with a keynote session on the "Confluence of Social Data & Search." Bing Director Stefan Weitz is due to give a presentation/demo and then chat with Danny Sullivan. With 10 minutes to go before we start, I see no evidence of pandas on the stage ... but there is some kind of covered podium/thing that looks mysterious (and a bit creepy, if I'm being honest, like a person is about to jump out from under the black covering). Stay tuned and we'll be back soon with coverage from today's keynote. We're back and we're underw [...]

SMX Advanced Liveblog: ‘You & A’ Keynote With Google’s Matt Cutts

sullivan-cutts-smx Day one of our SMX Advanced conference is wrapping up with a late afternoon tradition: Danny Sullivan's "You & A" conversation with Google's top spam cop, Matt Cutts. The session is due to start at 5:00 pm PST but, just between us, it's bit hectic up front and gut feeling is that we'll be a little late. (In other words, the Cuttlets are already out in force and Matt is being mobbed.) For those of you who like to keep track of what Matt wears, it's a green polo shirt today. Come on back and follow along as I try to keep up with what's always an entertaining session to wrap up the first day o [...]

Demand Media & Being “The Best Click” On Google

Demand Media's success? Listening to what people want and generating great content to show up at Google. At least that's part of it, said Demand's chief revenue officer Joanne Bradford -- and she came armed with screenshots and examples to prove it. Bradford's illustrations came during a case study presentation, "Are You Really Listening," at FM's Signal LA event. My live blogging of her talk is below. I've added some analysis, as well. Yes, Demand Tracks Bananas Bradford starts off saying people buy lots of bananas, $1.05 billion of them per day (or maybe per year). More people check [...]

Biz Stone: Twitter Drives “Let’s Watch It When It’s On” Viewing

Twitter doesn't claim to have caused the biggest Super Bowl viewing audience in history, but maybe it helped, says Twitter cofounder Biz Stone. Stone sees Twitter as helping drive live viewing by creating a shared experience. Stone also had a further rebuttal to Malcolm Gladwell's dissing of the value of social media in political movements. Stone's comments came during an on stage interview with Julia Boorstin of CNBC at FM's Signal LA event. My live blogging of the interview is below. Twitter & Marketing Has Twitter changed the marketing conversation? Biz, sure, it's a two way street [...]
