“Beam Me Up” Works To Beam You Up To Star Trek, On Bing

Bing is continuing to honor Star Trek (and promote tomorrow's release of Star Trek Into Darkness, the latest in the Star Trek film franchise) by boldly going where no homepage has gone before. After announcing their Klingon translator yesterday, Bing dedicated their homepage to the iconic series today, serving up numerous Star Trek facts and images when users search on secret star trek phrases. Today's Bing homepage features the planet Mercury, along with hidden links to facts about the planet, a film on space travel, and Mercury-inspired music performed by the BBC Philharmonic. B [...]

Bing: More Than 50% Of Searchers Click The First Result; 75% Click On Deep Links Result

The value of ranking first on a search results page is no secret, but today Bing is putting some hard numbers on it: More than 50 percent of Bing users click the first result, and more than 75 percent click there if the first result includes Bing's deep links. In a blog post today, Dr. Ronny Kohavi of Bing's Research & Development team, shares some valuable data about how Bing users interact with search results. After the 50 percent of users that click the top result, Bing says that only about 4-6 percent click the third result (depending on if it's an Instant Answer or a regular web [...]

Bing Adds Search Filter To Sort Results By Time Period

Bing has added a search filter that gives users the opportunity to limit search results to three recent time periods: Past 24 hours Past week Past month The options appear directly below the search box on Bing's search results page. It's a welcome addition, but one that Google has had for a long time now. In fact, Bing's time filter comes up a bit short of Google's in a couple regards: on Google, you can set a custom date range (but not on Bing) and, after limiting search results on Google to a specific time frame, you can also sort them by relevance or date. Bing's filter ap [...]

Official: Bing Updates Social Sidebar Design

Bing has officially announced they have redesigned the search results screen and social sidebar to help improve usability of the page. The changes include: The social results on the right are now clearly labelled as "Social Results" The search results on the left are now left-justified Addition of a + more link to expand the results to see more. We saw this was coming in tests that were leaked a few weeks ago. In that story, Danny Sullivan digs deeper into the main changes. Here are screen shots of before and after: Before: After: Related Articles: Bing T [...]

Bing’s New Social-Friendly Search Interface Now Live

The new Bing interface, with a healthy dose of social connections and discovery, is now live for all users. Bing's announcement today says that anyone can access the new interface at www.bing.com/new, but you should also see a new message atop the Bing home page that invites you to try "the best search, now with people from your social networks." Even without clicking the "Check it out" link or first going to www.bing.com/new, I was shown the new, three-column display on a search for "seattle restaurants." When Bing announced the new interface last week, it included "Snapshots" - [...]

Bing Goes Search-Retro With Cleaner Look For Results

Microsoft has started to roll out a new, simpler look for the Bing SERP. It looks very much like the "old Google." It's more spartan than the previous Bing UI -- or "clean" if you prefer. As Google has added more graphics, icons and features to its SERPs some have complained that the pages are starting to look cluttered or bloated. The Bing blog says that the intent behind the new SERP is to a create a "fresh, de-cluttered experience designed to help you find the results you want faster" and to make the page "easier to scan." Google and Bing Switch Places Bing originally launched with a [...]

Bing Testing New, Google-y Local Search Results

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the folks at Bing Local are paying Google a very nice compliment with a new display for local search results that looks quite a bit like what Google often shows. As first spotted by BrightLocal.com, Bing's new local search results no longer consistently show a "pack" of businesses listings and map at the top of the page, above all of the regular organic links. Instead, with the new display, Bing shows a mix of local results: The "pack" of listings may appear anywhere in the search results, not just at the top of the page. The map appears [...]

Bing Testing New Search Results Design

Bing is testing a new design for the search results layout. The new design seems a lot cleaner, fresher and more organized compared to the older design. Jason Hart tipped us off listing out the key differences: Vertical tabs removed Top and bottom search boxes widened Search button icon changed Several links removed from header Location information no longer displayed Icons used instead of text for rewards and preferences My smiling face added to the page instead of just my name Related searches moved from left rail to under the search box Here is a picture of the new design: [...]

Two New Bing UI Tests Spotted

The folks at Liveside.net, an independent blog that covers Microsoft's online efforts, have posted screenshots of two new Bing user interfaces that some of their readers have seen recently. In my searching this morning, I wasn't able to see either UI while doing about 5-6 different searches. Liveside calls the first one a "Metro style" -- it takes the daily photo and, rather than show a bit of across the entire header, boxes it in the upper left behind Bing's logo. The rest of the header looks (to my eyes) like Google's current search bar area. Liveside's reader explains that the abo [...]
