Life With Cortana, Microsoft’s Predictive Search Challenger To Google Now & Siri

cortana-600px Microsoft's new predictive search agent Cortana is finally becoming available to the general public. How does it compare to longstanding champion Google Now? After months of using them both, it's no contest. Google Now easily wins, in my daily life. But Cortana does gives Microsoft an important foundation in the predictive search space and puts it well ahead of Apple's own Siri. Welcome, Cortana Microsoft announced that Cortana would be part of Windows Phone 8.1 earlier this year. Developers and others who chose to install the Windows 8.1 preview on their phones have had access to Cortan [...]

Bing & Cortana To Get Academic Search Integration At A Whole New Level

cortana-600px Microsoft shared details about their future plans for deeply integrating academic data/search into the Bing search engine. Starting this Fall, Microsoft said they "will be able to point the way to a wealth of information from the academic community." Microsoft explained that currently Cortana, Microsoft's version of Google Now and Apple Siri, is powered by Bing. But in the Fall Bing "will have academic data tightly integrated and prominently featured on its search pages." Adding a blow to Google, Microsoft added that "instead of treating scholarly information as a separate search engine [...]

WATCH: Microsoft’s Cortana Keynote At SMX Advanced 2014

cortana-600px You're probably pretty familiar already with Siri and Google Now, the personal assistant-type technologies from Apple and Google, respectively. Each has its own approach to the idea of providing information and answering questions without needing a traditional search box and search query. You may be a bit less familiar with Cortana -- she's Microsoft's upcoming take on personal assistant technology, and in many ways, she promises to combine some of the best aspects of Siri and Google Now. There's no need to be unfamiliar any longer. Microsoft's Marcus Ash and Rob Chambers sat down with D [...]

Microsoft: No Plans For Ads In Cortana Yet; Debating Bringing To Androids & iOS

cortana-phone-600 It's far too early to consider monetizing Cortana, Microsoft's new virtual personal assistant, but the company is already thinking about how to scale her across different devices, platforms and around the world. Those were two of the key points from Microsoft's keynote conversation Thursday morning at our SMX Advanced conference in Seattle. Marcus Ash, a Windows Phone Group Program Manager, and Rob Chambers, a Group Program Manager in the Applications and Services Group, shared video and live demos of Cortana, and sat down for a Q&A with Search Engine Land's Founding Editor, Danny Sulli [...]

Microsoft’s SMX Advanced Keynote: Cortana Makes People More Likely To Search

cortana-600px We're ready to get started on day two of SMX Advanced, and today's opening keynote promises to talk about the future of search. Microsoft's Marcus Ash (Group Program Manager for Windows Phone) and Rob Chambers (Group Program Manager, Applications and Services Group) will be here to talk about Cortana, the company's recently launched virtual assistant that many have called Microsoft's version of Apple's Siri and Google Now. Cortana, like those other platforms, aims to provide answers, search results and assistance without a traditional search query. Together, products like these are [...]

Microsoft’s Cortana Assistant Personalization Comes To Bing On The Web

One of the most interesting things about Microsoft's new Cortana search assistant has just gone live for those early adopters of it: integration with Bing's search results. Cortana Personalization Comes To Bing Those using Cortana will now find "personalized cards" that will appear at the bottom of the Bing home page: Personalized information cards will also be integrated into Bing's search results, when deemed relevant. For example, here's how it looks for someone who has flight information being tracked (which Cortana learns about by reading the email on your Windows Phone): Ad [...]

Videos: Comparing Cortana & Siri & Google Now

cortana-600px Today, Microsoft released the developer preview of Windows Phone 8.1 and with that, the ability to play with a preview of Cortana, Microsoft's answer to Apple Siri and Google Now. Both Gizmodo and CNet have released video demos comparing Cortana & Siri & Google Now. I like the Gizmodo comparison a little more, so we will post that first followed by the CNet review. Gizmodo has not made their video embeddable, so you need to view it on Gizmodo.com. Here is the CNet video: [...]

Part Siri, Part Google Now: Microsoft Announces “Cortana” Virtual Assistant

cortana-600px Rumored for months, Microsoft has formally announced its answer to Apple's Siri and Google's Voice Search/Google Now: Cortana. Danny Sullivan is at the Microsoft Build Conference and live blogging it. Cortana appears to be sassy like Siri and can perform many of the functions that Google Now does (providing reminders and notifications regarding dates, meetings and so on). It appears to have numerous manual personalization capabilities as well. Cortana will also interact with and can launch apps on the device (like Siri or Google). Showing Cortana's smarts, there was apparently an examp [...]

New Video Shows Microsoft “Assistant” Cortana In Action

Cortana screen shot Microsoft will be introducing its Siri and Google Now/Voice competitor Cortana with Windows 8.1 in April. The new "intelligent assistant" will eventually be available cross-platform, although launching on Lumia Phones. The name Cortana comes from a character in the game Halo. It was originally thought that Cortana would look like her character in the game (see image right). However it now appears "she" won't have a face or a body. Cortana is intended to help users discover and search for information as well as providing Google Now like personalization and "predictive search" capabilities [...]
