Bing Quietly Adds A Scientific Full Size Calculator

bing-2013-logo-featured Bing, Microsoft's search engine, has finally added a full size scientific calculator to their search results. Daniel Rubino from WP Central first noticed this addition on Friday saying that now when you search for a math answer, not only do you get the answer, but you also get an interactive calculator in the search results. Here is a picture: Google has had this feature for a long time. But how scientific can Bing go with their math? We know Google can get graphical calculations, but Bing fails to do so. Bing Tags Hangs It Up & Shuts Down

bing-600 Bing Tags, which launched two years ago as Bing Linked Pages and then renamed and did an expansion about a year ago, has hung up the project and shut down the feature. Bing closed down Bing Tags on June 14, 2013. A Microsoft spokesperson told us: We can confirm that beginning on June 14, 2013, Bing Public Tags were no longer available and all existing tags were removed from Bing. Most search engines are constantly testing new features, removing failed features and trying alternatives out all the time. It is not surprising to see this feature go away. What Was Bing Tags? The feature allo [...]

Bing’s Satori Adds Timeline Data For About 500k Famous People

bing-satori-knowledge2-featured Satori, Bing's knowledge index, is expanding with the addition of timeline-style facts about important individuals. The new "Timeline" section is now showing up in the right-side search results for famous people such as Abraham Lincoln and Isaac Asimov (shown above), along with athletes (Serena and Venus Williams), artists (Vincent Van Gogh), business people (Bill Gates, Donald Trump, etc.), explorers (Sacagawea) and other important people. Bing: Poor Grammar & Typos May Result In Lower Search Rankings

spelling-grammar-typos-600 Duane Forrester from Bing wrote a blog post on the Bing Webmaster Blog suggesting that Bing's search ranking algorithms do in fact consider poor grammar, typos and poor language to be part of their ranking factors. Duane said, "just as you’re judging others’ writing, so the engines judge yours." Meaning, Bing does look at how a page of content is written. If the page has typos, grammar issues and so forth, to the extent that it might stop a reader from reading on - then it might also negatively hurt your rankings in Bing. Duane wrote: If you [as a human] struggle to get past typo [...]

Bing Webmaster Guidelines Updated To Include Demotions For Keyword Stuffing

bing-600 Bing has quietly updated their Webmaster Guidelines to include a stern warning to webmasters who think they can use keyword stuffing techniques to manipulate their rankings and get away with it. The warning says Bing may demote the site or delist the site that is using keyword stuffing. The new section was added sometime yesterday to their guidelines document. Here is the new keyword stuffing section: When creating content, make sure to create your content for real users and readers, not to entice search engines to rank your content better. Stuffing your content with specific keywords w [...]

Can Bing Be More Competitive In Search?

bing-satori-knowledge2-featured Recently, Nathan Safran wrote a piece titled, "The Bing Dilemma: What To Do With The Little Search Engine That Can't." In it, he posits that everything Bing has done in the past to grab market share is not working, partly because people are so used to using Google that any hope of capturing market share from the #1 player is an impossible dream. He suggests that, since the online division has been "bleeding rivers of cash with little to show for it" for many years, it might be time for Bing to give up altogether. I would grant Bing a little more gravitas and a little more time. With new [...]

Bing: Don’t Be Held Hostage Over The Perfect Domain Name

bing-2013-logo-featured Duane Forrester, Bing's Senior Product Manager, posted on the Bing Webmaster Blog that you should not be too crazed over picking an expensive domain name for your new web site. He said, even when you buy old domain names that are pricy, those domain names may have some bad history. Domain names with bad history can actually be a negative and thus less valuable than brand new domain names never used. He recommends you check the Way Back Machine when investigating what content was on the domain prior to buying it. He also recommends that you don't spend your whole budget on your domain nam [...]

bing-drawing-sketch-featured What will search look like in 2028? That's a question that the folks at Bing were tasked with answering for the new movie, Robocop. In a blog post this week, the Bing search folks shared a few screenshots showing a 3D, three-panel search display that they come up with for search circa 2028: (Note: Bing's original images were pretty dark, so I brightened them a bit in Photoshop for sharing here.) Here's how Bing describes the vision: Building off the voice recognition work we have releas [...]
