With Bing's latest round of new Twitter-related search features, users now can perform hashtag searches to find topics trending on the social media platform, as well as search for specific Twitter handles and celebrity-related tweets. WATCH: Microsoft’s Cortana Keynote At SMX Advanced 2014

cortana-600px You're probably pretty familiar already with Siri and Google Now, the personal assistant-type technologies from Apple and Google, respectively. Each has its own approach to the idea of providing information and answering questions without needing a traditional search box and search query. You may be a bit less familiar with Cortana -- she's Microsoft's upcoming take on personal assistant technology, and in many ways, she promises to combine some of the best aspects of Siri and Google Now. There's no need to be unfamiliar any longer. Microsoft's Marcus Ash and Rob Chambers sat down with D [...]

seo-200 A newly released report from Shareaholic claims the top five search engines -- Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask.com and AOL -- have all experienced a decline in search traffic since December of 2013. Using data from December 2013 through May 2014, Shareaholic evaluated aggregate organic search traffic numbers from more than 300,000 publishers reaching an audience of more than 400 million monthly unique visitors. The report shows Google's search traffic fell 17 percent between last December and May of this year. Bing, Yahoo, Ask.com and AOL saw an even bigger drop in search traffic numbers [...]

Amazon Fire Phone: Bing For Search, Nokia For Maps

Amazon Maps logo The emerging consensus from the early "hands on" or "first look" reviews is that the Amazon Fire Phone has some novel and interesting features but that it doesn't measure up, overall, to the iPhone or "true Android" devices. I've argued that Amazon missed the boat with its high-end pricing. Interestingly, there has been almost no talk about search on the Fire. Gmail, Google Maps, Google Search and other Google apps are not present in the Amazon Store. Users can still get to Google services on a browser of course. But Amazon has erected barriers to using Google on its devices. Among them [...]

Bing Ads Expands Bid Landscape Estimator Tool To Ad Groups, Non-U.S. Markets

Bing Ads Bid Lanldscape Ad Group Leve In March, Bing Ads launched its Bid Landscape tool in the U.S. -- essentially equivalent to the Bid Simulator in Google AdWords. Now, Bing Ads is rolling out Bid Landscape at the ad group level. Non-U.S. advertisers also now have access to bid landscape at the keyword level. Bid Landscape shows the estimated cost, click, impression and top impression impact of a bid adjustment based on recent history.  Estimations reflect how performance would have changed with a different bid in the past 7 days, so, like AdWords Bid Simulator estimates, they aren't guarantees for future performance. Two [...]

Will Google & Bing Penalize Microsoft Over Their Sponsored Post Campaign For Internet Explorer?

google-penalty-600 This morning, news broke that Microsoft Internet Explorer is getting help from SocialChorus to build more awareness for the aging browser by way of sponsored posts. Michael Arrington posted on his site an email from the company, soliciting him into this paid blog post campaign. The campaign instructs bloggers to write about their experience with using the new Internet Explorer and link to the brand page, but, at the same time, provide disclosure that the sponsored post is paid. In the instructions, there is no indication that the bloggers must use nofollow attributes in the link. As yo [...]

Microsoft Shuttering Bing Ads Express

express-train-station-travel-600 Bing Ads Express, Microsoft's program to encourage small businesses to adopt the paid search platform, will be sunsetted this summer. Launched just last October and modeled on Google's own AdWords Express, the program was designed to simplify and automate paid search advertising across the Yahoo Bing Network. Small and local businesses could use their Facebook pages as a landing page in lieu of having their own dedicated websites. Expanded targeting options were rolled out as recently as April. Apparently it wasn't enough. In a blog post announcing the shutdown, Bing Ads Express produ [...]

Microsoft: No Plans For Ads In Cortana Yet; Debating Bringing To Androids & iOS

cortana-phone-600 It's far too early to consider monetizing Cortana, Microsoft's new virtual personal assistant, but the company is already thinking about how to scale her across different devices, platforms and around the world. Those were two of the key points from Microsoft's keynote conversation Thursday morning at our SMX Advanced conference in Seattle. Marcus Ash, a Windows Phone Group Program Manager, and Rob Chambers, a Group Program Manager in the Applications and Services Group, shared video and live demos of Cortana, and sat down for a Q&A with Search Engine Land's Founding Editor, Danny Sulli [...]

Bing Ads URL Auto-Tagging Finally Arrives

bing-ads-600 Rejoice, the Bing Ads team has finally rolled out one of its most-requested features -- auto-tagging for ad destination URLs. When UTM tags are added to destination URLs on ads, the performance metrics can flow into Google Analytics. Until now, advertisers have had to manually add tag URLs or rely on a third-party solution every time they uploaded new ads in their Bing Ads campaigns. Here's how you do it: Go to the account and billing tab in the Bing Ads web interface and check the box next to "Add UTM tags to my ads' destination URLs". You then have two options, either to replace all ex [...]

Microsoft's Bing search engine has to obey it, as well -- and Microsoft says today that it expects to provide information on how to request removals "soon." In a short help file page that went up today, Bing said that it is working on a system for how those in the European Union can request removals. Here's Bing's full statement: We’re currently working on a special process for residents of the European Union to request blocks of specific privacy-related search results on Bing in response to searches on their names. Bing Sitemaps Best Practices & Large Site Sitemaps Issues

Bing logo large Bing has posted on the Bing Webmaster blog their best practices on how to implement XML Sitemaps files for your site. The post includes a large topic on how the best practices apply to really large web sites, with many URLs. Bing's Six Best Practices For Sitemaps: Follow the sitemaps reference at www.sitemaps.org. Common mistakes we see are people thinking that HTML Sitemaps are sitemaps, malformed XML Sitemaps, XML Sitemaps too large (max 50,000 links and up to 10 megabytes uncompressed) and links in sitemaps not correctly encoded. Have relevant sitemaps linking to the most relevant cont [...]
