The 10 Most Important Paid Search Developments So Far In 2014

money-mouse-ppc-600 It's been a big year so far for product listing ads on both Google and Bing. Google started putting more ads in the Knowledge Graph. Bing followed Google's lead on combining tablet and desktop traffic. And Google said it would begin stripping paid search queries from referrer strings. Now that we're halfway through the year, let's step back and look at what's happened so far in paid search. These were the 10 biggest announcements and changes to come from Bing Ads and Google AdWords in the first half of 2014. Bing Ads There were three announcements made by Bing Ads in the first hal [...]

Bing Ups Its Twitter Game: Rolls Out Hashtag & Twitter Handle Search Features

bing-twitter-600 Starting this week, Bing users are going to see even more Twitter content in search results. As a result of an exclusive partnership between the two companies that started in 2009, tweets have been showing up in Bing search results for some time. With Bing's latest round of new Twitter-related search features, users now can perform hashtag searches to find topics trending on the social media platform, as well as search for specific Twitter handles and celebrity-related tweets. To find topics currently trending on Twitter via Bing, users can enter a hashtag symbol at the start of a search [...]

WATCH: Microsoft’s Cortana Keynote At SMX Advanced 2014

cortana-600px You're probably pretty familiar already with Siri and Google Now, the personal assistant-type technologies from Apple and Google, respectively. Each has its own approach to the idea of providing information and answering questions without needing a traditional search box and search query. You may be a bit less familiar with Cortana -- she's Microsoft's upcoming take on personal assistant technology, and in many ways, she promises to combine some of the best aspects of Siri and Google Now. There's no need to be unfamiliar any longer. Microsoft's Marcus Ash and Rob Chambers sat down with D [...]

Study: Top 5 Search Engines See Search Traffic Drop By As Much As 31% Since December 2013

seo-200 A newly released report from Shareaholic claims the top five search engines -- Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask.com and AOL -- have all experienced a decline in search traffic since December of 2013. Using data from December 2013 through May 2014, Shareaholic evaluated aggregate organic search traffic numbers from more than 300,000 publishers reaching an audience of more than 400 million monthly unique visitors. The report shows Google's search traffic fell 17 percent between last December and May of this year. Bing, Yahoo, Ask.com and AOL saw an even bigger drop in search traffic numbers [...]

Amazon Fire Phone: Bing For Search, Nokia For Maps

Amazon Maps logo The emerging consensus from the early "hands on" or "first look" reviews is that the Amazon Fire Phone has some novel and interesting features but that it doesn't measure up, overall, to the iPhone or "true Android" devices. I've argued that Amazon missed the boat with its high-end pricing. Interestingly, there has been almost no talk about search on the Fire. Gmail, Google Maps, Google Search and other Google apps are not present in the Amazon Store. Users can still get to Google services on a browser of course. But Amazon has erected barriers to using Google on its devices. Among them [...]

Bing Ads Expands Bid Landscape Estimator Tool To Ad Groups, Non-U.S. Markets

Bing Ads Bid Lanldscape Ad Group Leve In March, Bing Ads launched its Bid Landscape tool in the U.S. -- essentially equivalent to the Bid Simulator in Google AdWords. Now, Bing Ads is rolling out Bid Landscape at the ad group level. Non-U.S. advertisers also now have access to bid landscape at the keyword level. Bid Landscape shows the estimated cost, click, impression and top impression impact of a bid adjustment based on recent history.  Estimations reflect how performance would have changed with a different bid in the past 7 days, so, like AdWords Bid Simulator estimates, they aren't guarantees for future performance. Two [...]

Will Google & Bing Penalize Microsoft Over Their Sponsored Post Campaign For Internet Explorer?

google-penalty-600 This morning, news broke that Microsoft Internet Explorer is getting help from SocialChorus to build more awareness for the aging browser by way of sponsored posts. Michael Arrington posted on his site an email from the company, soliciting him into this paid blog post campaign. The campaign instructs bloggers to write about their experience with using the new Internet Explorer and link to the brand page, but, at the same time, provide disclosure that the sponsored post is paid. In the instructions, there is no indication that the bloggers must use nofollow attributes in the link. As yo [...]

Microsoft Shuttering Bing Ads Express

express-train-station-travel-600 Bing Ads Express, Microsoft's program to encourage small businesses to adopt the paid search platform, will be sunsetted this summer. Launched just last October and modeled on Google's own AdWords Express, the program was designed to simplify and automate paid search advertising across the Yahoo Bing Network. Small and local businesses could use their Facebook pages as a landing page in lieu of having their own dedicated websites. Expanded targeting options were rolled out as recently as April. Apparently it wasn't enough. In a blog post announcing the shutdown, Bing Ads Express produ [...]

Microsoft’s Catapult Project Aims To Speed Bing Search, Improve Relevancy

bing-catapult-600 A major datacenter project at Microsoft could lead to faster and more relevant search results on the company's 5-year-old search engine, Bing. The Catapult project is a collaboration between Microsoft researchers and the Bing team that was presented Monday at an industry conference on computer architecture. A Microsoft blog post explains some of Catapult's technical aspects, including the use of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) on Microsoft's servers. It also details the improvements that Microsoft has seen in early testing. The potential impacts on Bing are what matter most to [...]

Microsoft: No Plans For Ads In Cortana Yet; Debating Bringing To Androids & iOS

cortana-phone-600 It's far too early to consider monetizing Cortana, Microsoft's new virtual personal assistant, but the company is already thinking about how to scale her across different devices, platforms and around the world. Those were two of the key points from Microsoft's keynote conversation Thursday morning at our SMX Advanced conference in Seattle. Marcus Ash, a Windows Phone Group Program Manager, and Rob Chambers, a Group Program Manager in the Applications and Services Group, shared video and live demos of Cortana, and sat down for a Q&A with Search Engine Land's Founding Editor, Danny Sulli [...]

Bing Ads URL Auto-Tagging Finally Arrives

bing-ads-600 Rejoice, the Bing Ads team has finally rolled out one of its most-requested features -- auto-tagging for ad destination URLs. When UTM tags are added to destination URLs on ads, the performance metrics can flow into Google Analytics. Until now, advertisers have had to manually add tag URLs or rely on a third-party solution every time they uploaded new ads in their Bing Ads campaigns. Here's how you do it: Go to the account and billing tab in the Bing Ads web interface and check the box next to "Add UTM tags to my ads' destination URLs". You then have two options, either to replace all ex [...]

Microsoft’s SMX Advanced Keynote: Cortana Makes People More Likely To Search

cortana-600px We're ready to get started on day two of SMX Advanced, and today's opening keynote promises to talk about the future of search. Microsoft's Marcus Ash (Group Program Manager for Windows Phone) and Rob Chambers (Group Program Manager, Applications and Services Group) will be here to talk about Cortana, the company's recently launched virtual assistant that many have called Microsoft's version of Apple's Siri and Google Now. Cortana, like those other platforms, aims to provide answers, search results and assistance without a traditional search query. Together, products like these are [...]

bing-2013-logo-featured To kick-off today's 2014 FIFA World Cup, Bing has launched a number of features around the tournament, including using its Bing Predictions technology to forecast World Cup winners. "On the heels of our recent foray into predictions, where we forecasted which contestants were most likely to get voted off or win The Voice, Dancing with the Stars and American Idol, we are taking the experiment a step further applying it to the World Cup," said Bing. Basing its predictions on factors like team records, home field advantages, weather conditions, and win-loss probabilities, Bing users can see [...]

Bing Says “Right To Be Forgotten” Request Info Coming Soon

mistakes-forget-forgotten-erase-600 The EU's new Right To Be Forgotten doesn't just apply to Google. Microsoft's Bing search engine has to obey it, as well -- and Microsoft says today that it expects to provide information on how to request removals "soon." In a short help file page that went up today, Bing said that it is working on a system for how those in the European Union can request removals. Here's Bing's full statement: We’re currently working on a special process for residents of the European Union to request blocks of specific privacy-related search results on Bing in response to searches on their names. [...]

Bing Sitemaps Best Practices & Large Site Sitemaps Issues

Bing logo large Bing has posted on the Bing Webmaster blog their best practices on how to implement XML Sitemaps files for your site. The post includes a large topic on how the best practices apply to really large web sites, with many URLs. Bing's Six Best Practices For Sitemaps: Follow the sitemaps reference at www.sitemaps.org. Common mistakes we see are people thinking that HTML Sitemaps are sitemaps, malformed XML Sitemaps, XML Sitemaps too large (max 50,000 links and up to 10 megabytes uncompressed) and links in sitemaps not correctly encoded. Have relevant sitemaps linking to the most relevant cont [...]

How A PPC Fraud Ring Impersonated 300+ Advertisers In May 2014

ppc-featured Did you know that your paid search ads are susceptible to the same type of fraud that affects other forms of digital advertising? And we're not just talking about click fraud here.  The fraudulent tactic affecting PPC the most dramatically these days is a fairly insidious one that can be hard to detect. It's called PPC ad impersonation and occurs when an impostor advertiser takes a known URL, like JossAndMain.com, and uses it as the Display URL of their own advertisement. When you first hear about PPC fraud rings, you tend to think of click fraud where an automated system, not a real pe [...]

HTTP_shutterstock Regular expressions (regex) are one of the most powerful tools we have in our SEO arsenal,  but they're incredibly intimidating! Learnings From SMX London: The Impact Of Social On Search

fire_shutterstock_31640122 SEOs and Social Marketers speculate on the impact that Social Media marketing has on how well their websites perform in search results. There has been much conjecture with many people interpreting an array of correlations as causation. Both Google's Matt Cutts and Bing's Duane Forrester have come out (on more than one occasion) to emphatically state that Facebook Likes, Tweets, Google +1s, Pinterest Pins and other similar social indicators are not part of their algorithms. At the recent SMX London on May 13, 2014, John Mueller of Google and Duane Forrester of Bing took the stage to talk [...]

Bing announced on its Facebook page that it is currently accepting entries for its 2014 homepage photo contest. Coinciding with its 5th birthday, Bing is asking for photo submissions to be uploaded via a link it has posted on Facebook: It’s been 5 years since we launched Bing. To celebrate, we’re looking for amazing images from you! Submit your personal photo of a place you love for a chance to be showcased on Bing and win an Xbox One. Bing says the top ten finalist will be announced on June 23. Last year, the Bing Homepage Photo Contest winner was an image of Niagara Falls. The ph [...]

Finding New Music On Bing Just Got Easier

bing-music-featured Bing announced today it has updated the way it delivers music video search results. According to the announcement, people search for music videos differently than when they are searching for other types of videos: When we examined search session data, we realized that when people search for music videos they tend to explore rather than finding what they were looking for and then moving on. Bing says its music video search experience was designed to reflect how people have historically experienced music. Now, when users perform a Bing video search for an artist, band or album, Bing deli [...]
