Bing Adds Directions Driving Directly In Search Results

bing-airport-maps-featured Bing announced they now offer driving directions in the form of a quick answer directly in the Bing search results. For example, last week, I drove from New York to Toronto and I wanted to tell how long the drive was. So all you need to do is search for [nyc to toronto] and Bing will tell you it is about 7 hours and 31 mins and 491 miles. Clicking on the map will take you to Bing's turn-by-turn driving directions, and it also works when you try it from your Windows Phone, iPhone and/or Android devices. Here is a picture: Of course, Google has offered a similar experience for a whi [...]

Bing Ads Starts Allowing Keyword Variations Once Flagged As Duplicate

bing-ads-600 Just about anyone who has imported a campaign from Google AdWords or uploaded a new keyword set into Bing Ads has experienced the "duplicate keyword" error that occurs when two keywords in an ad group have subtle differences like hyphens or accents. That's because Bing Ads removes extra characters from keywords in a process called "keyword normalization" which then creates the duplication. Bing also normalizes search queries. For example, if you bid on the keyword "bike repair" and a user searches for "bike-repair", your ad could show because Bing removes the hyphen from the search query [...]

10 Key Takeaways From Meet The Search Engines @ SMX West

key-door-keyhole-600 Another SMX is in the books! This show definitely had one of the most engaged attendee groups I have ever seen at any conference in recent memory. The polite, attentive search engine marketers weren't there to just network and enjoy the San Jose sun. They were interested and looking for answers. And on day three of SMX West 2014, the Meet The Search Engines session delivered a lot of those answers. This panel is generally one of the crown jewel sessions at SMX and drew yet another big crowd. Bing's Duane Forrester (@duaneforrester) and Google's Matt Cutts (@mattcutts) were jovial, infor [...]

Bing Ads Now Shows Zero-Click Search Queries, Offers 20 To 40X More Data Than Before

Bing logo Formerly dubbed the Search Query Report, Bing Ads has updated what's now called the Search Term Report, which houses the data on the terms users actually typed before clicking on an ad. Included in the new release are results on zero-click search queries. These terms had been excluded from the report, but advertisers had been requesting to see them in order to build out stronger negative keyword lists and to better understand the terms for which their ads are not resonating with users. With the update advertisers now have access to 20 to 40 times more search term data than in the past, acco [...]

Drive PPC Revenues By Addressing The Bing Dilemma

Life Beyond Google Meme In February, comScore released their monthly analysis of the US search marketplace, reporting Google with a 67.6% share of the search market and Bing, which powers Yahoo! search, a 28.7% share. Though these findings continue to confirm Google’s dominance in the search landscape, it’s important to highlight that Bing’s share of the market has continued to grow year-over-year, accounting for 3.6 billion searches per month. As advertisers continue to navigate an increasingly competitive and complex landscape, these search trends underscore an incredibly profitable and accessible oppor [...]

Cortana screen shot Microsoft will be introducing its Siri and Google Now/Voice competitor Cortana with Windows 8.1 in April. The new "intelligent assistant" will eventually be available cross-platform, although launching on Lumia Phones. The name Cortana comes from a character in the game Halo. It was originally thought that Cortana would look like her character in the game (see image right). However it now appears "she" won't have a face or a body. Cortana is intended to help users discover and search for information as well as providing Google Now like personalization and "predictive search" capabilities [...]

Bing Saves, Search Bookmarking Feature, Now Public Beta

bing-saves A month ago, Microsoft started testing a new search feature named Bing Saves. This feature enabled searchers to save URLs and searches to their personal Bing/Microsoft account, in order to build an index of their own saved searches. That feature seems to now be available as public beta for anyone who wants to try it. To try it yourself, go to bing.com/saves and you should see this dashboard: You will also see a link in the top Bing navigation that says "SAVES beta." There is a disclaimer on the footer of the page that reads, "This feature is an experiment. Saved results may not be [...]

Bing Quietly Adds A Scientific Full Size Calculator

bing-2013-logo-featured Bing, Microsoft's search engine, has finally added a full size scientific calculator to their search results. Daniel Rubino from WP Central first noticed this addition on Friday saying that now when you search for a math answer, not only do you get the answer, but you also get an interactive calculator in the search results. Here is a picture: Google has had this feature for a long time. But how scientific can Bing go with their math? We know Google can get graphical calculations, but Bing fails to do so. They do however link to their partner, Wolfram Alpha that can offer those re [...]

bing-600 Microsoft Bing has added new features to the Bing search results when you search for tax related queries. This is being done because Bing and other search engines see a huge increase in the number of tax related queries between January and April, i.e. before your taxes are due on April 15th. Bing now shows smarter results when you search for [tax forms], [IRS forms], or even specific forms like [irs form 1040]. Bing Tags Hangs It Up & Shuts Down

bing-600 Bing Tags, which launched two years ago as Bing Linked Pages and then renamed and did an expansion about a year ago, has hung up the project and shut down the feature. Bing closed down Bing Tags on June 14, 2013. A Microsoft spokesperson told us: We can confirm that beginning on June 14, 2013, Bing Public Tags were no longer available and all existing tags were removed from Bing. Most search engines are constantly testing new features, removing failed features and trying alternatives out all the time. It is not surprising to see this feature go away. What Was Bing Tags? The feature allo [...]

Bing’s Satori Adds Timeline Data For About 500k Famous People

bing-satori-knowledge2-featured Satori, Bing's knowledge index, is expanding with the addition of timeline-style facts about important individuals. The new "Timeline" section is now showing up in the right-side search results for famous people such as Abraham Lincoln and Isaac Asimov (shown above), along with athletes (Serena and Venus Williams), artists (Vincent Van Gogh), business people (Bill Gates, Donald Trump, etc.), explorers (Sacagawea) and other important people. The Timeline section seems to be almost exclusively reliant on Wikipedia, at least based on my searches this morning. Bing says it currently h [...]

Bing: Poor Grammar & Typos May Result In Lower Search Rankings

spelling-grammar-typos-600 Duane Forrester from Bing wrote a blog post on the Bing Webmaster Blog suggesting that Bing's search ranking algorithms do in fact consider poor grammar, typos and poor language to be part of their ranking factors. Duane said, "just as you’re judging others’ writing, so the engines judge yours." Meaning, Bing does look at how a page of content is written. If the page has typos, grammar issues and so forth, to the extent that it might stop a reader from reading on - then it might also negatively hurt your rankings in Bing. Duane wrote: If you [as a human] struggle to get past typo [...]

Bing Webmaster Guidelines Updated To Include Demotions For Keyword Stuffing

bing-600 Bing has quietly updated their Webmaster Guidelines to include a stern warning to webmasters who think they can use keyword stuffing techniques to manipulate their rankings and get away with it. The warning says Bing may demote the site or delist the site that is using keyword stuffing. The new section was added sometime yesterday to their guidelines document. Here is the new keyword stuffing section: When creating content, make sure to create your content for real users and readers, not to entice search engines to rank your content better. Stuffing your content with specific keywords w [...]

Can Bing Be More Competitive In Search?

bing-satori-knowledge2-featured Recently, Nathan Safran wrote a piece titled, "The Bing Dilemma: What To Do With The Little Search Engine That Can't." In it, he posits that everything Bing has done in the past to grab market share is not working, partly because people are so used to using Google that any hope of capturing market share from the #1 player is an impossible dream. He suggests that, since the online division has been "bleeding rivers of cash with little to show for it" for many years, it might be time for Bing to give up altogether. I would grant Bing a little more gravitas and a little more time. With new [...]
