Can Bing Be More Competitive In Search?

bing-satori-knowledge2-featured Recently, Nathan Safran wrote a piece titled, "The Bing Dilemma: What To Do With The Little Search Engine That Can't." In it, he posits that everything Bing has done in the past to grab market share is not working, partly because people are so used to using Google that any hope of capturing market share from the #1 player is an impossible dream. He suggests that, since the online division has been "bleeding rivers of cash with little to show for it" for many years, it might be time for Bing to give up altogether. I would grant Bing a little more gravitas and a little more time. With new [...]

Bing: Don’t Be Held Hostage Over The Perfect Domain Name

bing-2013-logo-featured Duane Forrester, Bing's Senior Product Manager, posted on the Bing Webmaster Blog that you should not be too crazed over picking an expensive domain name for your new web site. He said, even when you buy old domain names that are pricy, those domain names may have some bad history. Domain names with bad history can actually be a negative and thus less valuable than brand new domain names never used. He recommends you check the Way Back Machine when investigating what content was on the domain prior to buying it. He also recommends that you don't spend your whole budget on your domain nam [...]

For Robocop, Bing Imagines The Future Of Search In 2028

bing-drawing-sketch-featured What will search look like in 2028? That's a question that the folks at Bing were tasked with answering for the new movie, Robocop. (Well, "new" as in a remake of the 1987 original that just hit theaters this week.) In a blog post this week, the Bing search folks shared a few screenshots showing a 3D, three-panel search display that they come up with for search circa 2028: (Note: Bing's original images were pretty dark, so I brightened them a bit in Photoshop for sharing here.) Here's how Bing describes the vision: Building off the voice recognition work we have releas [...]

Microsoft: We Don’t Censor Search Outside China

bing-china-600 Bing censors search results in China in accordance with Chinese law. But does it do so in the US and elsewhere around the world for Chinese users? That disturbing proposition was raised yesterday in an article appearing in The Guardian. The article asserted that Bing search results for Chinese language speakers in the US were radically different than those in English for controversial terms such as Tiananmen Square or Dalai Lama: Microsoft’s search engine Bing appears to be censoring information for Chinese language users in the US in the same way it filters results in mainland China. S [...]

Like Bing, it uses pricing from the  Coindesk Bitcoin Calculator. WolframAlpha also offers Bitcoin conversion, having launched that in January. As for Google, it remains a no show. It provides conversion of a [...]

Microsoft Testing “Bing Saves” Search Bookmarking Feature

Bing logo Microsoft appears to be testing a new feature for Bing: Bing Saves. According to a Neowin community member who saw the beta, it's a way to click and bookmark a search result for later retrieval from a personal Microsoft account. Below is a screenshot of the feature from Neowin. The utility of such a feature is fairly self evident. Users can create a personalized "index" or repository of sites and URLs for later reference and use. What's interesting is that search bookmarking and "personal web" databases existed for several years and were mostly discontinued for lack of adoption. [...]

“When Do The Olympics Opening Ceremonies Start?” Search Engines Compete To Answer

olympic-rings-featured Who knew a simple question would be so hard to answer? Yesterday I searched across all three engines to find out more about the Olympic opening ceremonies and when they start. I quickly discovered that the official website of NBC, which is broadcasting the games in the U.S., had nothing about the ceremonies or when they'll air in the States.  So back to the search engines I went, chronicling my odd experiences along the way. Oh, and to cut the suspense, the Opening Ceremonies happen at 12:14pm ET on Friday, Feb. 7, although in the US, NBC won't broadcast them live, going with a recording 7 [...]

Microsoft’s $15 Million Check-in: Will Redmond Buy Foursquare?

microsoft-foursquare-featured Microsoft has invested $15 million in Foursquare and said it will license the former's location data according to news released yesterday. Foursquare aspires to be "the location layer for the internet." With real-time feedback about local data accuracy, based on user movements and check-ins, Foursquare is becoming a stronger and stronger source of local information. However I wouldn't necessarily agree with the notion that Foursquare's data are the most accurate in the market. Google and Yelp may still have better data -- although I suspect Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley would dispute that. [...]

With Nadella’s Appointment, The “Search CEOs” Now Run Google, Yahoo & Microsoft

google-microsoft-yahoo-featured Satya Nadella being named CEO of Microsoft isn't just big news for Microsoft. It's big news for search. For the first time in ages, the three major search companies in the US are all run by CEOs who either came out of a search-background or have a solid understanding of it. Despite the attention search has gained over the years, I feel like it still gets overlooked as the powerhouse it is. It's responsible for about half of online ad spending in the US. It's where the majority of Google's money comes from. As I joke, Google Glass and those self-driving cars are being funded by ads about mes [...]

goal-posts-wisecontrarian-flickr-7993738373_db9fa4009a_b It looks like we have an upset. Volkswagen has garnered the top spot with the most ad impressions on Google. While Nestle has taken the lead on Bing to promote the new Butterfinger Cups. Nadella presided over the transition from Live Search to Bing and understands the search business. Nokia's Stephen Elop said that he might consider selling Bing if he were elevated to the CEO role. Nadella would be very unlikely to do that, recogniz [...]
