Yandex Takes Exception To Search Malware Study

yandex-logo-200px Yandex has taken exception to a recent study that reported it has more malware in its search results than other major search engines like Google and Bing. The company shared its concerns with Search Engine Land via email, saying that it also sent the same response to AV-TEST, the German IT security firm that published the findings from an 18-month search/malware study. We reported on the study yesterday after PC Mag was first to report on it. The AV-TEST study examined more than 13 million Yandex search results and found malware in about .024 percent -- twice the percentage of malware it [...]

computer-hacking-malware-feature About three years ago, Google was labeled in one study as the "King of Malware." Things have apparently changed a lot since then. A new study reports that Google is beating its primary search competitors pretty significantly when it comes to keeping malware out of search results. The 18-month study (PDF), done by a German IT security group called AV-TEST, reviewed more than 40 million web pages -- the vast majority (about 38 million) coming from Google, Bing, Yandex and Blekko. The results: About .0025 percent of Google's search results were links to malicious websites. Blekko was [...]

Described by the company as "experimental," the app responds to users' spoken queries and displays results from that user's social connections in a horizontal format which Yandex believes may be the best way to display social search for the future. One key aspect of the app is the historical nature of the data queried. "Wonder" is not [...]

apple-yandex-logos It's no secret that Apple is ditching Google Maps on iOS6. In Russia, that decision looms large for Russian search engine Yandex, which will provide the backend for the new Apple Maps app, according to Bloomberg. Software developers in Russia that have been using the developer version of iOS6 have reported seeing the Yandex integration in Apple's new mapping app. As one developer told Bloomberg: "When you search for Vladimir Lenin's Mausoleum, it offers you to get more details on Yandex.Maps application or offers to download Yandex.Maps from App Store if the user doesn't have it installe [...]

Google has been moving lots of goal posts for us all recently and the "Hreflang" tag is a case in point. A succession of Google speakers has presented the latest "Hreflang" thinking at International Search Summits @SMX throughout 2012. On each occasion, the presentation and explanation was different from the one before. But Don't Canonicals & Hreflang Tags Belong Together? Susan Moskwa presented first when Google was [...]

iPad-apalooza: Yandex Looks At iPad Search & 30 Percent Of North Americans Want iPad3

On the even of the iPad3 (or "HD") Russian search engine Yandex released data on iPad usage in Russia. The company found that "iPad users accounted for about 1 percent of all internet users in Russia." The majority were from the greater Moscow area. While the iPad is neither a PC nor a "mobile" device exactly, Yandex said that the behavior coming from iPad users was more like PC user behavior than that of smartphone owners: iPad users make as many search queries as, and even slightly more than, PC users, and significantly more than mobile phone users. The share of long search sessions on iPa [...]

Fastest Growth For Baidu, Second Place For Yandex & Google Is The Runner Up?

Last time, I was analysing the financial performance for the quarter of Google and demonstrated that internationally -- excluding the UK -- Google's growth rate over last year was around 44%. We have now seen the same quarter's figures from other major international search engines and we can conclude that Baidu's growth rate in China tops the lot, followed by Yandex in Russia. Even though Google's rate of growth outside the US and UK exceeds the US by some 20%, it still seems significantly behind both the Chinese performance of Baidu at 85% growth over the same quarter in 2010 or Yandex's [...]

Yandex Expands To Turkey, First Shots Fired In New Google, Baidu & Yandex Stand Off

yandex-baidu-google-featured Did you think the search engine war was over and that Google had won? Perhaps you believed that there were a few outposts still resisting the Google conquest, but expected that they’d give in eventually? If so, you’d better sit down and take a strong drink as the first salvos in the new Search Engine War has just been exchanged -- and this time, it’s not going to be so one-sided. Google’s ‘Blitzkrieg' from 2003 to 2006 took out many locally strong search engines who simply couldn’t find the resources, couldn’t match Google’s pace of innovation or couldn’t resist Google [...]

Yandex Launches English-Language Version Its Webmaster Tools

Russian search engine Yandex has launched an English-language version of Yandex.Webmaster, its suite of webmaster tools. The service can be reached at webmaster.yandex.com. If you've used the Google and/or Bing webmaster portals, Yandex's will be familiar to you. On sign-up, users have five options to confirm site ownership: HTML file, meta tag, text file, WHOIS or DNS. Once your site is confirmed, Yandex.Webmaster shows a lot of information about how Yandex sees your site -- pages that the spider has visited, pages appearing in Yandex search results, links, search queries and others. Yandex Has Blockbuster $1.3 Billion IPO

Yandex NV, the parent of the Russian search engine Yandex, had a very successful debut on the Nasdaq market yesterday. The company raised more than $1.3 billion in its IPO. It follows last week's similarly splashy but much smaller IPO from LinkedIn. As with the LinkedIn IPO last week many investors turned right around and sold the company's shares for some quick profit-taking. However, many investors anticipate considerable growth for Yandex, whose home country is Europe's second largest internet market after Germany. Yandex also operates in several other countries that were once part of th [...]

Yandex Finally Files For Long-Awaited IPO

Russia's leading search engine Yandex formally filed for an IPO that has been expected for at least three years but was delayed by the global recession. The company plans to raise roughly $1 billion through its US Nasdaq offering. Founded in 1997, Yandex controls approximately 65 percent of the Russian search market and is valued at an estimated $6 billion to $9 billion. Google controls just over 20 percent of Russian search. Yandex also operates in Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. Yandex.com (the English language site) was launched in May of last year. The shares offered to the market w [...]

The State Of Online Marketing In Russia

For online marketers, Russia offers two appealing qualities: It's one of just five countries in the world where Google isn't the market leader, and Russia is now the 2nd biggest online market in Europe in terms of users, having passed the UK last year. Yandex is the market leader in Russia, with a 64% market share, more than double Google's 22% share, according to Russian statistics service LiveInternet (Dec. 2010). In addition to reaching native Russian speakers, Yandex (Yet Another Indexer has been aggressively expanding globally, now reaching 56 million users from all over the world. [...]

Yandex & Seznam: Local Powers That Be In Europe

A few weeks ago, the Czech online industry suddenly was in an uproar. The search engine Seznam was seemingly outranked by Google in market share. With almost the entire of Europe being dominated by Google, the Czech Republic, together with the Russian Federation, held an exceptional position. In these countries, Google isn't the most dominant force in search. Instead, local search engines take the leading positions there. The shift in dominance from Seznam to Google was disputed by Seznam, and it seems they have a valid point in their criticism. The numbers provided by web measurement se [...]

If Google Played Jeopardy: Smartest Search Engine, But It’s No Ken Jennings

Google: Go to the head of the class. Wikipedia: You stay after school for extra tutoring. That seems to be one of the conclusions you can draw from a fun blog post today by Wolfram|Alpha founder Stephen Wolfram. Writing about the Jeopardy battle between past champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter and IBM's Watson computer (the computer won a dry run earlier this month), Wolfram decided to see how several search engines would fare when asked to answer Jeopardy clues. The results? Google scored highest in both having the answer show up anywhere on the first page of search results and ha [...]

Search Marketing Tips For Yandex, Russia’s Top Search Engine

Globally, Russia is the eighth largest market of Internet users, and as we know, Google is playing second fiddle to Yandex, which is currently the main search engine in Russia with well over half of the market share. Comscore ranked the web property first in Russia with 34.9 million unique visitors in August 2010, It is also the 25th site in the Alexa Top 100. What's more, Yandex is the de [...]

Yandex, Facebook Strike A Deal For Status Updates

Yandex, the number one search engine in Russia, has struck a deal with Facebook to get some updates for its search engine index. As announced today, the deal has two parts: First, Facebook will supply Yandex with a data feed of status updates from Facebook Pages. This is similar to the Facebook-Google agreement announced last December, but falls short of Facebook's agreement with Bing, which also includes updates on personal Facebook profiles. Yandex says it will add the Facebook data into its blog search index. Second, the Yandex.ru home page is showing a Facebook content widget (see im [...]
