computer-hacking-malware-feature About three years ago, Google was labeled in one study as the "King of Malware." Things have apparently changed a lot since then. A new study reports that Google is beating its primary search competitors pretty significantly when it comes to keeping malware out of search results. The 18-month study (PDF), done by a German IT security group called AV-TEST, reviewed more than 40 million web pages -- the vast majority (about 38 million) coming from Google, Bing, Yandex and Blekko. The results: About .0025 percent of Google's search results were links to malicious websites. Blekko was [...]

Fastest Growth For Baidu, Second Place For Yandex & Google Is The Runner Up?

Last time, I was analysing the financial performance for the quarter of Google and demonstrated that internationally -- excluding the UK -- Google's growth rate over last year was around 44%. We have now seen the same quarter's figures from other major international search engines and we can conclude that Baidu's growth rate in China tops the lot, followed by Yandex in Russia. Even though Google's rate of growth outside the US and UK exceeds the US by some 20%, it still seems significantly behind both the Chinese performance of Baidu at 85% growth over the same quarter in 2010 or Yandex's [...]

Yandex Expands To Turkey, First Shots Fired In New Google, Baidu & Yandex Stand Off

yandex-baidu-google-featured Did you think the search engine war was over and that Google had won? Perhaps you believed that there were a few outposts still resisting the Google conquest, but expected that they’d give in eventually? If so, you’d better sit down and take a strong drink as the first salvos in the new Search Engine War has just been exchanged -- and this time, it’s not going to be so one-sided. Google’s ‘Blitzkrieg' from 2003 to 2006 took out many locally strong search engines who simply couldn’t find the resources, couldn’t match Google’s pace of innovation or couldn’t resist Google [...]

Yandex Has Blockbuster $1.3 Billion IPO

Yandex NV, the parent of the Russian search engine Yandex, had a very successful debut on the Nasdaq market yesterday. The company raised more than $1.3 billion in its IPO. It follows last week's similarly splashy but much smaller IPO from LinkedIn. As with the LinkedIn IPO last week many investors turned right around and sold the company's shares for some quick profit-taking. However, many investors anticipate considerable growth for Yandex, whose home country is Europe's second largest internet market after Germany. Yandex also operates in several other countries that were once part of th [...]

The State Of Online Marketing In Russia

For online marketers, Russia offers two appealing qualities: It's one of just five countries in the world where Google isn't the market leader, and Russia is now the 2nd biggest online market in Europe in terms of users, having passed the UK last year. Yandex is the market leader in Russia, with a 64% market share, more than double Google's 22% share, according to Russian statistics service LiveInternet (Dec. 2010). In addition to reaching native Russian speakers, Yandex (Yet Another Indexer has been aggressively expanding globally, now reaching 56 million users from all over the world. [...]

Yandex & Seznam: Local Powers That Be In Europe

A few weeks ago, the Czech online industry suddenly was in an uproar. The search engine Seznam was seemingly outranked by Google in market share. With almost the entire of Europe being dominated by Google, the Czech Republic, together with the Russian Federation, held an exceptional position. In these countries, Google isn't the most dominant force in search. Instead, local search engines take the leading positions there. The shift in dominance from Seznam to Google was disputed by Seznam, and it seems they have a valid point in their criticism. The numbers provided by web measurement se [...]

If Google Played Jeopardy: Smartest Search Engine, But It’s No Ken Jennings

Google: Go to the head of the class. Wikipedia: You stay after school for extra tutoring. That seems to be one of the conclusions you can draw from a fun blog post today by Wolfram|Alpha founder Stephen Wolfram. Writing about the Jeopardy battle between past champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter and IBM's Watson computer (the computer won a dry run earlier this month), Wolfram decided to see how several search engines would fare when asked to answer Jeopardy clues. The results? Google scored highest in both having the answer show up anywhere on the first page of search results and ha [...]

As announced today, the deal has two parts: First, Facebook will supply Yandex with a data feed of status updates from Facebook Pages.
