Yandex & Seznam: Local Powers That Be In Europe

A few weeks ago, the Czech online industry suddenly was in an uproar. The search engine Seznam was seemingly outranked by Google in market share. With almost the entire of Europe being dominated by Google, the Czech Republic, together with the Russian Federation, held an exceptional position. In these countries, Google isn't the most dominant force in search. Instead, local search engines take the leading positions there. The shift in dominance from Seznam to Google was disputed by Seznam, and it seems they have a valid point in their criticism. The numbers provided by web measurement se [...]

Seznam.cz Disputes Google’s No. 1 Ranking In Czech Republic

Czech search engine Seznam.cz disagrees with recent reports that Google has overtaken it as the number one search engine in the Czech Republic. In a blog post with an accompanying English-language translation, Seznam calls last week's news reports "misleading" and says they were based on "a rather unobjective interpretation of Toplist statistics." The news, which we reported here was also published and discussed in numerous Czech media outlets. According to numbers published last week by Toplist, a web measurement service, Google had surpassed Seznam by a couple percentage points in the [...]

Google Now #1 Search Engine In Czech Republic; 5 Countries To Go For Global Domination

Google has just become the number one search engine in the Czech Republic, leaving only five countries on earth where it's not the most popular site for searching the web. According to Toplist, a web measurement service, Google's aggregate share inside the Czech Republic was 47.2% between January 4 and January 12 (yesterday). That's a combination of searches done on Google.cz, Google.sk, and other Google engines used inside the country. It beats the aggregate share of Seznam.cz and two other Seznam sites, which had 45.5% share during the same week. (chart source and Google translatio [...]

Yandex Adds Image, Video Search To Global Search Engine

Yandex, the Russian search engine that received strong reviews earlier this year when it went global, has expanded its worldwide search engine to include image and video search. The new options are available as tabs/links on Yandex.com. (The Russia-only search engine is at Yandex.ru.) When Yandex announced its global site in May, the company specifically said it was more of a playground for testing search algorithms, and "not a service for the audience." But the new image and video search engines are both very user-friendly and have features that are similar to what international searc [...]

Russia’s Yandex Search Engine Goes Global

Yandex, the top search engine in Russia, has launched a global search engine at Yandex.com. And some of the early user feedback is quite good. In its announcement (Russian language), Yandex calls this an "alpha service" and the "beginning of a long journey." In this English-language news release, the company says it's been indexing foreign web sites and adding the content to its search engine for the past two years. In the Russian-language announcement, Yandex refers to this new, global search engine as "a platform for testing new algorithms [in] global search, and not a service for [...]

Report From The Field: Search In China 2008

We're wrapping up SMX China in Nanjing this afternoon. By all measures, the show was a success, with about 300 attendees and a dozen exhibitors, with people from China as well as many other Asian countries, India, Israel and even Africa in attendance. Search in China is thriving, seemingly impervious to the economic turbulence that's buffeting most of the rest of the world. There are several reasons for this—some obvious, some surprising—but the net takeaway is that China is poised to become an even more important market for search marketers once we've passed through this period o [...]

How Search Engines Redirect Users To Country-Specific Sites

Yahoo just started redirecting people in the UK who are trying to reach Yahoo.com instead to its Yahoo UK web site, something that Google has done for a long time. With the change, this seemed a good time to revisit how all the major search engines may intercept people trying to reach their ".com" versions from countries outside the United States. Below, the examples are drawn from someone in the UK trying to reach .com versions of each of the major search engines. Those in other countries often will find similar interception in place. Yahoo If you are based in the UK, Yahoo will [...]

Baidu aims to take on Google and Yahoo in Japan from Reuters reports Baidu has relaunched in Japan at http://www.baidu.jp/. The press release called the launch a "formal launch of its Japanese language search engine." As part of this launch, Baidu revamped the Japanese home page and added blog search. Baidu currently holds a 70-percent market share in China and hopes to replicate that success in Japan. Here is a comparison of Baidu's main site in China and the new Baidu Japan site, which is more portal in nature. Baidu China: Baidu Japan: Robin Li, Baidu's chairman and CEO, said: We [...]

Singapore Offers Cash Incentives To Build New Search Engine

Singapore launches contest for next-generation search engine from PhysOrg.com reports Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology, and Research is managing a contest to build out "a next-generation multi-media online search engine." What I find humorous about the contest is that they expect $100,000 and eight months to be enough time and money to be enough to pull off a major multimedia search engine. Singapore is not the first country to put government funds into the challenge against Google. Germany has its Project Theseus, France is doing its Project Quaero, and Japan has an effort, too. [...]

Alibaba.com Set For High Flying Chinese IPO

In what is widely expected to be the biggest technology IPO since Google and the biggest Internet IPO by a Chinese firm, Alibaba.com is ready to sell just over 850 million shares on the Hong Kong stock exchange. Those shares could fetch as much as $1.49 billion. Yahoo owns 39 percent of Alibaba Group, the parent of Alibaba.com, and has said it will buy about $100 million worth of shares in the offering. Trading is set to begin the first week of November. [...]

Japan Backing Device-Specific Search Tech To Compete With Google

Japan to fight Google search dominance from the Financial Times covers Japan's continuing efforts to subsidize new generation search technologies tied to gadgets and hardware, in part to be competitive against US-based search companies like Google. From the report: The Japanese project is comprised of 10 partnerships, each tasked with a specific next-generation search function. For example, the government has matched NTT Data with Toyota InfoTechnology Center and Toyota Mapmaster to create an interactive, personalised car navigation system. Other partnerships involve NEC, Hitachi and Sony Com [...]

Exalead Teams With Directory Assistance Provider To Offer Voice-Powered Mobile Search In France

Gary Price at ResourceShelf alerted us to the fact that enhanced directory assistance provider 118 218 in France is now offering a much broader service using content and results from search engine Exalead. In principle, this is comparable to enhanced directory assistance/mobile voice search services being offered in the US by Tellme, 1-800-YellowPages, Jingle Networks and Google (Goog411) but it's a much broader service. Users in France pay for 118 128 (owned by US-based InfoNXX) like traditional directory assistance in the US. By contrast, the services above (Tellme, et al) are all ad-suppo [...]

German-Backed Search Project, Theseus, Given $165 Million Grant

Theseus aims to develop an advanced multimedia search engine. The EU will allow German subsidy of the project through 2011. We covered news in the past about this search project as well as the related Quaero project, which is being backed by France. [...]

Properazzi – A European Property Search Engine

Properazzi is a multi search engine that scans property websites and provides access to over 1,800,000 properties for sale or rent in 45 European countries. Searchers can limit searches to particular towns or countries, by price, keyword and sale or rental. A Google powered map allows another method of locating a particular place or region. Individual property entries are limited to the information provided by the originating website, but they include price (obviously), usually a photograph and a description of the property. Clicking on the property takes the searcher through to the originati [...]

eTools.ch: A “Swiss Army” Meta Search Engine

I'm generally not a big fan of meta search technologies—I prefer to go directly to the search service I feel will likely give me the best response for any given query, rather than sifting through the aggregated results from several engines. But recently, developer Stephan Schmid invited me to kick the tires on his Switzerland-based meta search engine eTools.ch, and after playing around with it a bit I came away impressed. Enter a query and eTools.ch searches the four major search engines (Ask, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo), several European engines (Seekport, Entireweb and Bluewin) and [...]
