Yandex, the top search engine in Russia, has launched a global search engine at Yandex.com. And some of the early user feedback is quite good. In its announcement (Russian language), Yandex calls this an "alpha service" and the "beginning of a long journey." Baidu aims to take on Google and Yahoo in Japan from Reuters reports Baidu has relaunched in Japan at http://www.baidu.jp/. The press release called the launch a "formal launch of its Japanese language search engine." As part of this launch, Baidu revamped the Japanese home page and added blog search. Singapore launches contest for next-generation search engine from PhysOrg.com reports Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology, and Research is managing a contest to build out "a next-generation multi-media online search engine." What I find humorous about the contest is that they expect $100,000 and eight months to be enough time and money to be enough to pull off a major multimedia search engine. In what is widely expected to be the biggest technology IPO since Google and the biggest Internet IPO by a Chinese firm, Alibaba.com is ready to sell just over 850 million shares on the Hong Kong stock exchange. Threadwatch points to a PC Advisor report that the euro search engine project Quaero between France and Germany is now being split up. France will continue developing Quaero to help counter American-based search giants like Google and Yahoo. Germany is to start their own search technology project called Theseus. Two articles out today highlight Google's not all powerful in every market. In Russia and some other countries, Google is fighting to gain share.
