Here is a quick synopsis of the new features: Browser Compatibility with Safari and Chrome, and mobile [...]

StumbleUpon Responds To Concerns About Links & Iframing

On Wednesday, Feb 1, 2012, we published an article discussing some changes StumbleUpon made during their recent redesign which removed source links from their content pages and forced all users to view content from the site through an iframed toolbar, which they could not close if they were logged in. One of the things I have always really loved about StumbleUpon is that unlike many social communities, they listen to their users and always try to move the site forward based on user feedback and testing. After publishing the story, StumbleUpon reached out to me in an effort to explai [...]

StumbleUpon Kills Direct Links, iFrames Everything

Story Update: February 3, 2012 - StumbleUpon Responds To Concerns About Links & Iframing StumbleUpon, who happens to be one of the more popular and successful social media sites with over 20 million users (doubling from 10 million in about a year and a half), recently launched one of the biggest redesigns I can remember… basically changing everything about the site as a whole. Having recently removed blogs, themes, and groups off the site, the new changes continue to move away from any focus on the site and more towards getting users back into the toolbar, whether iframed or i [...]

SEMPO LA Event Highlights Rapidly Emerging Opportunities In Mobile

At the recent SEMPO LA Mobile Event (sponsored by AT&T interactive) moderator Danny Sullivan told a story about the early days at Google. As early as 2000, Sergey Brin was telling everyone who would listen about the incredible applications of his search engine on cell phones. Even for a forward thinker like Danny, this seemed a little bit farfetched and ahead of its time. Fast forward to 2011, and Google still has quite a bit to say about mobile. Mobile Commerce Is Maturing Bon Mercado, a mobile product specialist at Google, said that the wide adoption of smart phones in the US (up to [...]

New Google Analytics Feature: Load Time Measurement

Since the beginning of last year, Google Analytics has been pushing a faster load time by pushing the new asynchronous tracking code to being the default code. Matt Cutts also commented on how the new Google Analytics code is slightly better in terms of search (watch video on the bottom of this article). But now, with the addition of Site Speed to Google Analytics*, we will be able to understand how load times affect not only search ranking (or ppc quality score), but also how it affects user experience and ultimately, the conversion rates of specific pages and the site as a whole. New [...]

Zuckerberg In Zion: Speaks To Senator Hatch, Students At BYU

zuck-hatch-featured You might wonder what in the world could bring the Harvard dropout and under-30 founder of Facebook together with the 77-year-old conservative Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) to talk to students and attendees at Brigham Young University earlier today. I'm still trying to figure that out myself, despite having attended the event. Overall, it was fairly interesting, the crowd seemed to enjoy it, but many were there for the "Social Network" guy, thinking he was just like the character in the movie - those people, I believe, were surprised by his cheerful demeanor. I was there to see what Zuck sa [...]

SEO Gets Dissed by CBS TV Series “The Good Wife”

Finally! SEO gets its first mainstream exposure since 2005, when search marketer David Karandish briefly appeared the Martha Stewart edition of NBC's The Apprentice (yes, I really did pull that reference out). But this time, the lights of Hollywood didn't shine so brightly on search engine optimization - SEO was mentioned in a negative clip. In the most recent episode of CBS's hit drama The Good Wife (air date 1/18/11, episode title "Two Courts") - the courtroom case of the week featured a defendant accused of killing his father, who fears a jury will be biased against him based on what he [...]

Search & The 2011 Sundance Film Festival

The annual Sundance Film Festival is about to converge here in Utah January 20-30, 2011, with and YouTube as Leadership Sponsors. Bing is the official search engine of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival website, and YouTube has two special channels for the event, the main Sundance Film Fest channel, and the YouTube Screening Room, featuring 12 short films from this year's festival, which will only be available on YouTube until February 3. Bing Continues To Cozy Up To Hollywood Earlier today, the Bing Entertainment team announced earlier a special new video site: [...]

Bing Busts Out An Early Look At Most Popular Search Trends In 2010

It's not even December yet, and already at least one of the search engines is ready to get a jump on the annual round up of the things we searched for most in 2010. Today, Bing sent over a brief list for us to preview their most popular overall searches, tallied from the last 11 months of search data. Certainly 2009 was a big year for celebrity news, as Michael Jackson's death was the top story (see my coverage of last year's biggest search trends: This Is It: The Most Popular Searches Of 2009), but even posthumously, he didn't drop that far out of the top people searches. Celebrity news co [...]

OTA Coalition Forms, Calls Google+ITA Deal A Threat To Consumers And Competition

Last week, it was announced that was formed by a group of travel and technology businesses, including  Expedia Inc. (, Hotwire , TripAdvisor),  Farelogix, and  SideStep; and Sabre Holdings, owners of Travelocity to lobby against Google's acquisition of ITA software (for $700 million) which provides data to a number of top travel websites, including Bing Travel (Farecast). Speculation worried the travel industry for months leading up to the formal announcement on July 1, 2010, and ever since then, Google's Acquisition of ITA has been highly scrutini [...]

Justin Timberlake Releases Facebook Movie Trailer: “The Social Network”

The full length trailer for the social saga based on Facebook debuted on JT's official blog and Yahoo Movies earlier today: The full length movie is scheduled to be released in early October, bringing the story of Facebook's rise to fame to the big screen. From the trailer, it looks like we'll see quite a bit of Boston style backstabbing from its early days of development at Harvard (was that the same bar from Good Will Hunting I spotted in the clip?) and the courtroom drama ensuing from lawsuits over security, privacy and copyright infringement. The movie stars Justin Timberlake as Naps [...]

Bing To Rollout Red Carpet In Hollywood Along With New Features

What's the hottest trend in Hollywood right now? Ding, ding, it's Bing. Google's so 2009. As previously reported by CNET, Bing is hosting a special entertainment focused event in Hollywood on June 22, which Danny Sullivan and I will be attending; we'll be live blogging and tweeting it, of course. Bing made a splash at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and the search engine has already been rubbing elbows in the entertainment vertical for awhile with xRank. Here's the press invite that they sent out, which shows what they have planned for Tuesday's event: We're expecting to [...]
