Google Launches Shopping Campaigns To Ease PLA Management

google shopping While Google's switch to paid Product Listing Ads for Google Shopping has proven wildly successful, growth has likely been hindered by the fact that setting up and managing Product Listing Ad campaigns for Google Shopping has been plagued with complexity. Today, Google announced a new campaign type called Shopping Campaigns designed to  make it easier for advertisers to manage PLAs. The key feature in Shopping campaigns is that feed data will now be visible from within AdWords, rather than being walled off in Google Merchant Center. You'll be able to see attributes in your Google Merchant [...]

Google Launches Expanded AdWords PLAs On Mobile Devices

google-shopping-products-featured Google rolled out product listing ads (PLAs) on mobile devices in March. Now the company has launched an updated display for PLAs on smartphones that allows more products to be displayed from the search results page. Users can swipe to see more PLAs from their smartphones. Google also enlarged the product images and product titles for mobile PLAs. According to Google, early tests of the updated view have shown to drive more traffic to retailers. [...]

Turn Domain Bias In Search Results To Your Advantage

thinking_thought-bubble_man_doubt_veer_3077149_M There's been valid debate over how influential keyword and exact match domains are in search engine optimization. Whether or not the latest Google or Bing algorithm takes the words in your domain name into consideration, the reality is that searchers -- those consumers actually choosing to click your link -- most likely do. The phenomenon has been dubbed "domain bias," defined as a user's propensity to believe that a page is more relevant just because it comes from a particular domain. While search engines generally reward good content with good rankings, there are certain qualities that ma [...]

Google AdWords Third-Party “Review Extensions” Start Rolling Out To All Accounts

adwords-quality-score-featured In June, Google announced the beta release of Review Extensions which allow advertisers to append a quote of endorsement from a reputable publication in their AdWords ads. Today, these Review Extensions will begin to roll out to all AdWords accounts. You should see the Review Extensions option under the Ad extensions tab in your account within the next few days. The blurb you include in your ads can be a paraphrased review or an exact quote from the publication. Review Extensions can take a few days to be approved. Google recommends setting one Review Extension at the campaign level fo [...]

Study Finds Small Businesses Waste 25 Percent Of Their PPC Budgets

money-garbage-shutterstock While pay-per-click marketing has become an integral part of many small businesses' marketing plans, most SMBs struggle to find the time and resources to manage their PPC campaigns. A new study finds that, due to managerial and strategic errors, SMBs inadvertently waste a quarter of their paid search budgets. Paid search software firm, WordStream, conducted the study by reviewing the accounts of 500 small and mid-sized business clients who manage their own AdWords accounts. WordStream found that less than half of the businesses have conversion tracking installed on their landing pages. A la [...]

Debate: Do Single Product PLA Ad Groups Strangle ROI?

Google Shopping Building out Product Listing Ad campaigns in Google AdWords with single product or single SKU ad groups has become a fairly common practice. The idea being that isolating each product into its own ad group gives advertisers more control over which item gets served for a given query and enables faster product-level performance analysis and more granular bidding strategies. A new paper from CPC Strategy challenges this approach to PLA management. It's not a new position from CPC Strategy, but CEO Rick Backus says, "We were surprised to see how quickly this SKU-level build out strategy gained [...]

Local Google Shopping PLAs And Local Storefronts Roll Out To Limited Set Of Retailers

google-shopping-featured Today, Google is making public what several speakers at SMX East alluded to last week: local availability for Product Listing Ads. The latest iteration of Google's wildly successful Product Listing Ads, which will be referred to simply "Local PLAs" in this article, are currently available to a select set of US based retailers such as REI and Sephora. When users click on a Local PLA, they are taken to a local storefront -- yet another new feature -- which includes product detail and availability, related items available in that location, store hours and directions and other typical Google Pl [...]

Out With The Old, In With The New: Google Partners Replaces Google Certification Program

google-adwords-certified-partner-logo1 Google launched its new Google Partners program yesterday, a certification platform that provides agencies and online marketers with free certification exams, access to "Google experts" and other members in the Google Partners community, along with sales and marketing toolkits. After the initial announcement was published on the Google Agency Blog, an addendum was added, clarifying that the new certification "experience" on Google Partners will replace the Google Certification Program beginning November 13. According to a report on Search Engine Round Table by Search Engine Land news edi [...]

Bing Ads Launches Call Extensions With Skype On All Devices

bing-ads-featured Long anticipated, Bing Ads has rolled out call extensions powered by fellow Microsoft entity, Skype. The use of Skype uniquely allows Bing Ads call extensions to be delivered across all devices, including desktops. Call extensions can be set up using the web UI, Bing Ads Editor or the new Bing Ads APIs.  They will also import directly from Google AdWords campaigns into Bing Ads. The set up options are very similar to AdWords, though there is the option to use a local or toll-free forwarding number. As with the "directions" link that rolled out in Bing Ads location extensions last m [...]

Hot Tactics For Geo-Targeted Ads On Google & Bing

Geographic Segmentation Map for PPC Ads At SMX East this morning, I sat in on the Improving Your Geographic Targeting Tactics On Google & Bing session, in large part because I'm far more familiar with SEO than with paid search, so I like to stretch myself and learn more about the advertising side of the local search equation. The session was moderated by Matt Van Wagner (President of Find Me Faster), and featured speakers Kevin Lee (CEO of Didit.com), Sam Owen (PPC & CRO Account Manager of Hanapin Marketing), and Paul Corkery (Senior Operations Program Manager at Microsoft). I actually have quite a lot of familiari [...]

A PLA Investigation:The Case Of The Hot Pink Wedge Pump

womens_pumps The takeover of the formerly-free Google Shopping by Product Listing Ads (PLAs) is less than a year old. With any new online marketing channel, you would expect some kinks in the system -- i.e., some idiosyncratic behavior that is unexpected -- and PLAs are no exception. This article delves into a very specific problem within an actual campaign of a marketer that was using Adchemy software to manage their PLA campaigns. (Specific product brands, store name and campaign results have been disguised.) This problem may seem very esoteric at first, but if you look closely, chances are the same [...]

Google’s Hummingbird Takes Flight: SEOs Give Insight On Google’s New Algorithm

google-hummingbird4-featured On the eve of its 15th birthday last week, Google revealed a new search algorithm named Hummingbird. Designed to be more precise and provide faster query results, the algorithm is based on semantic search, focusing on user intent versus individual search terms. As Search Engine Land's Danny Sullivan explained in his FAQ: All About the New Google "Hummingbird" Algorithm: Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query - the whole sentence or conversation or meaning - is taken into account, rather than particular words. The goal is that pages match [...]

“100% Not Provided Is Not The End Of SEO” Insider Opinions On Google’s Move To Withhold Data

Not Provided Earlier this week, Google revealed it would be encrypting all search data, rendering website owners unable to see search term information previously offered through the "referrer" system. While Google had encrypted the data two years ago for searches performed by users signed in to their Google account, and then earlier this year for any searches from the Chrome omnibox, the decision to withhold all data - regardless if a user is signed in or not - left many SEO insiders surprised it happened so suddenly. To take a pulse of the industry, we've published reactions to the "100% not provide [...]

Local Voice Search Wars And The Opportunity For Businesses

siri-google-voice Since the official inception of mobile voice search with Apple's launch of Siri in 2011, consumers, search professionals and businesses have watched for the rise of voice search in local. Despite Siri's initial inadequacies and obvious voice recognition challenges, savvy multitasking mobile consumers are finally adopting the technology to find the best nearby restaurant, an urgent care center or a plumber in a pinch. Why? It's fairly intuitive, really. Many folks search on the go and can speak faster than they can type and need both hands free in this 24/7 world. As voice search becomes mor [...]

Organic Vs. Paid: What $10 Million In Search Revenue For Hewlett-Packard Tells Us

click-share-top-position It certainly isn't the first look at the relationship between paid and organic search, but new a new study by Resolution Media and Kenshoo claims to put an end to the debate over whether paid search campaigns cannibalize organic revenue or add incremental value, even when organic visibility is substantial. Search agency Resolution Media and Kenshoo, a marketing technology company, analyzed a year's worth of US paid and organic campaign data from Imaging and Printing Group (IPG) of Hewlett Packard (HP). The data set included only clicks and visits in instances where both a paid listing and a [...]

4 Paid Search Strategies To Advertise Your Entire Product Catalog

Clothes Shop Production

As retailers continue to invest more in paid search, consumers continue to expect a richer and more engaging shopping experience. In order to capitalize on this growing revenue opportunity, retail advertisers must be equipped to advertise their entire product inventory. [caption id="attachment_172 [...]

Google Expands AdWords Conversion Window Settings

google-adwords-square-logo In a small but significant change, Google is doing away with the 30-day conversion window in AdWords. Now advertisers can customize the conversion window from 7 to 90 days. Extending the window up to 90 days is good news for marketers whose sales cycles typically take longer than 30 days after an ad click or for those advertisers focused on luring repeat buyers back to the site and want to track performance on that metric. Advertisers with shorter sales cycles that don't want lagging conversions to cloud their attribution data, can opt to shorten the window. Some may wish for an even sho [...]

Paid Search Drives Store Revenue… But How Much?

Category Test Set Up RKG has long been interested in the question of online to offline spillover. We've also long been critical of the sloppy, ill-conceived tests that have misled many advertisers on this spillover in the past. We've recently participated with a few of our retail-chain clients on more carefully designed studies to get a more responsible answer to this question. The Conventional Wisdom You hear numbers thrown around all the time about the online to offline spillover factor. I've heard that for every order tracked online there are 4, 6, 7 -- I even heard 10 once -- offline orders driven. All of th [...]

10 Questions To Ask Before You Hire A Customer Review Management Service

Thumbs Up & Down [caption id="attachment_170947" align="alignright" width="300"] Photo credit: Man Ray Shotland[/caption] I have been doing a bit of work in the reputation management space as of late, and the subject of customer review management comes up a lot. There are probably hundreds of review management services out there, and it's difficult to understand what makes one better than the other. With that in mind, I thought it would be helpful to provide a list of questions for those in the market for a review management service: 1. Do you syndicate content? If so, where? If the reviews actually go [...]
