International Search Summit Keynote: Yandex Co-Founder & CTO Ilya Segalovich

Yandex is Russia's leading search engine, besting even mighty Google in numbers of unique visitors in its home country. But, did you know comScore also ranks it as the world's fourth largest overall search engine, ahead of Bing in number of search requests processed? In part, that's due to its global ambitions to expand beyond its home borders. With recent product introductions and infusions of capital, Yandex has positioned itself to be a solid competitor over the coming years. And, if you're a serious search marketer, that means Yandex should be showing up as a very bright light on your r [...]

Live @ SMX London: From Authorship To Authority: Why Claiming Your Identity Matters

While "content is king," many marketers overlook the all-important factor of authority, and the process required to establish and maintain it. Google underscored the importance of authority when it introduced "author rank" as an important factor in its ranking algorithm. To get good rankings these days, you not only need good page rank, but good author rank, as well. Beyond improving your search engine visibility, there are other benefits to becoming an authority. First and foremost is the intangible but very real positive perception you gain when Google acknowledges you as an authority [...]

Live @ SMX Advanced: Think You Know Good Content? Fuggedaboutit. Here’s What Really Counts

Ever since Google "pandalized" the rankings of many sites, the mantra of many publishers and search marketers has been "content, content, content." Wise words: the now ongoing Panda updates are designed to reward websites that offer valuable information and penalize sites that are using old-school optimization techniques like keyword stuffing, "pretending" to offer insights about a particular topic while in reality serving up thin gruel in a fruitless attempt to garner high rankings. But, even though everyone "knows" good content when they see it, almost nobody can offer a concise defin [...]

Live @ SMX Advanced: Managing Search In A Multiscreen World

Quick survey question: How many "screens" are you paying attention to right now? Computer? Check. Smartphone? Check. Tablet? Check. Television? Perhaps. And for how many of these screens have you optimized your search campaigns? And how do those campaigns interact and reinforce one another when your customers also are multitasking in their simultaneous multi-screen worlds? It's an important question, primarily because many of us are still living in the single screen world of desktop search. And current evidence suggests that may prove to be a serious, perhaps fatal mistake. Just yesterd [...]

Live @ SMX London: Facebook’s New Graph Search & Its Marketing Implications

In January, Facebook unveiled its first major move into the search space: Facebook Graph Search. Graph Search is not just another index of the Web, however. Rather, it's powered by what people are liking and sharing, leading to vastly different results than you'd see on Google. And while it’s not currently a direct threat to Google, the writing is on the wall, so to speak: Graph Search is poised to change the very fundamentals of SEO, and socially-informed search and content marketing. Graph Search is currently being rolled out as a small private beta, but over time all billion-plu [...]

Report: Tablets Yield 15% Lower RPC Than PCs; (Another) Rebuttal To AdWords Tablet/PC Combo

The proliferation of tablet devices has begun to lower the value of the tablet segment overall for paid search marketers, even as competition heats up. That's according to the Q1 Digital Marketing Report by RKG, which finds that tablets generated 15% lower revenue per click than traditional computers. Revenue Per Click by Device Type vs Computer "Discrepancy is More Likely to Increase" Much has been made of Google's decision to combine tablets and PCs in enhanced campaigns. The RKG  report is not alone in challenging Google's claim that usage behavior and ad performance among the devices [...]

Live @ SMX Advanced: The Periodic Table Of SEO Ranking Factors, 2013 Edition

Many people think of the periodic table as a basic organizational map of the elements. It is, but it's also much more powerful than that. By definition, a periodic table incorporates recurring trends, allowing you to make connections and deduce relationships that might not be obvious at first glance. It can also be used to predict new or undiscovered properties and trends that others may not be aware of, and that can be hugely influential in the highly competitive environment of search marketing. That's why The Periodic Table Of SEO Ranking Factors, 2013 Edition is one of the lead-off s [...]

SMX Advanced Keynote: Microsoft’s Vision Of The Future Of Search

Ask just about any search marketer what they associate with Microsoft, and the answer will be "Bing." But, Microsoft is much more than Bing, with many business units and a formidable research division. And increasingly, Bing is not "just" Microsoft's Google competitor; rather, it is at the core of everything the company is trying to accomplish. If Microsoft is successful with even a handful of its ambitious projects in big data, data mining and connecting the various technologies it has developed, the new possibilities and opportunities that will open up for marketers will be enormous.
