Why Yahoo’s Not Going To Steal The Search Default For iPhone Away From Google

Apparently Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer wants to be the default search for Apple's Safari browser on iPhone and iPad and has been preparing to make a solid pitch. Well, we all want things we can't have, and I'd be incredibly surprised if Yahoo got its wish here. Kara Swisher over at Re/code has the scoop, in her Marissa Mayer’s Secret Plan to Get Apple to Dump Google and Default to Yahoo Mobile Search story. Be sure to read that. Here, I'm going to share the incredibly tough list of obstacles that would have to be overcome to turn this from a fantasy into reality. Yahoo Has No Search Techno [...]

Search Market Share: Yahoo Hits New Low About To Slip Into Single-Digits

us-map-bing-google-yahoo-featured On the heels of Yahoo's Q1 2014 earnings in which its search business showed signs of life, comScore released new monthly search market share figures for the US market. They show Yahoo with 10.1 percent of the market -- a new low for the company. It would appear that Yahoo is continuing its long, slow, market-share decline and about to slip into single-digits for the first time. In absolute numbers, however, Yahoo search query volumes were up. So were Yahoo's rivals. By comparison, Google was flat and Bing was up 0.2 points. It appears that Bing continued to siphon off Yahoo's usage. [...]

Yahoo Turns To Yelp To Beef Up Local Search

Yahoo-Yelp deal According to a report appearing today in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Yahoo will be incorporating local content and listings from Yelp into its main search results. As the article points out, Yelp has a similar deal with Microsoft-Bing and, of course, with Apple (maps). Yelp has an API that permits third parties to use a portion of its reviews and local listings content. The Bing deal, announced in June of last year, is a more elaborate version of that with a deeper integration. Below is a screenshot of how Yelp content is shown in Bing search results today: Yahoo has recently sta [...]

With Nadella’s Appointment, The “Search CEOs” Now Run Google, Yahoo & Microsoft

google-microsoft-yahoo-featured Satya Nadella being named CEO of Microsoft isn't just big news for Microsoft. It's big news for search. For the first time in ages, the three major search companies in the US are all run by CEOs who either came out of a search-background or have a solid understanding of it. Despite the attention search has gained over the years, I feel like it still gets overlooked as the powerhouse it is. It's responsible for about half of online ad spending in the US. It's where the majority of Google's money comes from. As I joke, Google Glass and those self-driving cars are being funded by ads about mes [...]

Yahoo Tells SEC: 31% Of Our Revenue Comes From Microsoft

microsoft-yahoo-search-alliance Yahoo has revealed in a US Securities & Exchange Commission filing that nearly one-third of its revenue last quarter -- 31% -- came from its search deal with Microsoft, according to a Bloomberg report. That's far higher than the "more than 10%" figure Yahoo previously acknowledged, making it seem even more difficult for the company to potentially walk away from the deal. From the Bloomberg report: The company outlined the portion of revenue it gets from a search agreement with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), following inquires stretching back several months, according to new regulatory filings [...]

Yahoo-Microsoft Search Tensions On Public Display In Court Ruling

Microsoft has essentially had to sue Yahoo to get the company to fully comply with the terms of their 2010 "Search Alliance" agreement. Yahoo under Marissa Mayer had sought to delay rollouts of Bing search results in Taiwan and Hong Kong, awaiting a new Microsoft CEO. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer resigned ahead of schedule under board pressure because of a growing sense that Microsoft's core businesses were increasingly under siege and the company wasn't making sufficient headway. Former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop is arguably the leading candidate to succeed Ballmer. Regarding the Bing rollou [...]

Yahoo’s Mayer: “Our Search Share Has Declined” But She’s Optimistic About Opportunities

yahoo-purple-y-logo Yahoo is making progress in a number of product areas under CEO Marissa Mayer, but search isn't one of them -- a fact that Mayer herself admitted during today's Q3 earnings call. Yahoo's US share of the search market was just 11.3 percent in September, according to just-released comScore numbers -- that ties Yahoo's all-time low set back in July. On the conference call today, Mayer essentially stated the obvious about Yahoo's position in search: "It is true that, over the past several years, our search share has declined. In terms of the search alliance, we're trading share with Microso [...]

Google Gets Lowest Score Ever In Customer Satisfaction Survey

google-angry-frustrated-insanity-featured There's a mystery surrounding the latest customer satisfaction numbers released by ForeSee Results (for the American Customer Satisfaction Index [ACSI]). Published late last night, they indicate the lowest levels of consumer satisfaction with search engines (and portals) since 2003. The satisfaction scores for social sites are worse. According to the survey, which ranks sites on a 100 point scale, Google received its worst score (77) since the inception of the survey more than a decade ago. Google's score last year was 82. This year Bing and Yahoo both received scores of 76, which are lo [...]

Yahoo To Shutter AltaVista, Axis & Several More Products

yahoo logo Out with the old. Out with the new. Yahoo's latest round of spring cleaning includes the shut down of one of the web's oldest search services (AltaVista) and one of the newest (Yahoo Axis), along with 10 other Yahoo products and services. Goodbye AltaVista Yahoo says AltaVista will be shutting down on July 8th. AltaVista launched way back in 1995, when you practically had to walk uphill in the snow -- both ways -- in order to find anything on the internet. It was the first full-text web search product and became a popular online destination. I remember it being scary good for that era. [...]

Yahoo Wins $2.75 Billion Appeal In Yellow Pages Case

Yahoo legal Yahoo announced yesterday that it had prevailed in an appeal of a $2.75 judgment in Mexico obtained by former joint venture partners. Those former partners, Worldwide Directories and Ideas Interactivas, sued Yahoo for breach of contract and damages. The case arose from the termination of a contract between Yahoo de Mexico and Ideas Interactivas. In roughly 2002, the companies agreed to jointly produce online and print directories: "Yahoo! Paginas Utiles." The project was initially successful and the parties sought to expand the deal to other countries and regions, including Central America, [...]

Former Google Product Manager Takes A Senior Director Role At Yahoo

yahoo-logo A Yahoo spokesperson confirmed that Dylan Casey has joined Yahoo as a senior director in the platform organization. According to Casey's Linkedin profile, the new Yahoo senior director was head of project management at Path for the last year and five months after serving as a product manager at Google for nearly eight years. During his time at Google, Casey was responsible for launching the Google bar, as well as developing and launching Google Realtime Search. A one-time professional cyclist, Casey led the development of Path's product strategies in 2012 and 2013, while recruiting Path's p [...]

Yahoo Announces New Search Tools & Upgrades In Their Continued Battle To Win More Of The Search Market

yahoo-search-featured Just a day after the story broke that Yahoo wanted out of their deal with Microsoft, Yahoo's senior vice president of search Laurie Mann commented on new search tools and upgrades that are scheduled to launch over the coming months. According to an article in Bloomberg News, some of the planned upgrades are being created along with Microsoft. "We've got some really cool things in the pipeline, which we'll be announcing and rolling out over the coming months," said Mann. After playing a key role in establishing Google as the world's most popular search engine,  Marissa Mayer has been dri [...]

Even If Yahoo Wants To Leave Microsoft, Here’s Why It Can’t

google-microsoft-yahoo Despite effectively renewing its search deal with Microsoft recently, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Yahoo wants a way to break that deal. Why didn't Yahoo take the opportunity it just had? I suspect that technically and financially, it couldn't. Yahoo's "Get Out Of Microsoft Free" Card The WSJ story says that Yahoo has been "quietly" trying to find a way out of its deal with Microsoft. There are some very specific reasons why Yahoo could break that ten year deal early. One of them is the failure for Microsoft to help Yahoo to reach promised "revenue per search" or RPS goals. T [...]

Yahoo Extends Microsoft Search Deal & Revenue Guarantees

microsoft-yahoo-featured Yahoo is giving Microsoft a further chance to prove that its search ads really can make Yahoo as much money as promised -- at a price. Microsoft has agreed to extend "search revenue guarantees" that it has continually paid since the two companies signed a deal in 2009. Yahoo Declares An Extension Reuters spotted the extension as part of Yahoo's latest quarterly financial filing: On April 30, 2013, Microsoft extended the RPS Guarantee in the U.S. for an additional 12 months commencing April 1, 2013. Second Time Guarantee Extended To translate into plain language, when Yahoo & Microso [...]

Chitika ads appear on various Yahoo PC sites (e.g., Answers, Local) and Yahoo (Bing) search/text ads are syndicated across Chitika’s network of roughly 250,000 publisher sites. Now that relationship is expanding to mobile. According to the news out this morning: The multi-faceted agreement with Yahoo! includes; off--network search syndication, monetization of Yahoo! owned and operated properties, and mobile ad serving and monetization. This deal allows Chitika to continue to provide world-class monetization sol [...]

Yahoo Buys Mobile Startup With Big Search Chops

yahoo Earlier today Yahoo and Jybe announced that the latter was being acquired by the former. Jybe, which I had not heard of previously, is described by Yahoo as "a personalized recommendation company founded with the vision to help people find the things they love to do based on what’s trending in their social circles." It sounds like a "social search" or "social discovery" app. Indeed, all five Jybe team members are former search people -- and former Yahoo employees: As part of this acquisition, we’re welcoming an extremely talented group of engineers and data scientists who will join Ya [...]

Yahoo Clues, App Search & Other Products To Shut Down April 1

yahoo-chopping-block-featured Marissa Mayer is tightening Yahoo's belt. Since taking over as Yahoo's CEO, she's spoken repeatedly on the need to zero in on being part of its users' "daily habits." Today, the company announced the shut down of seven products that don't fit that "daily habit" mantra. Included in the group are a couple search-related products, including one under-the-radar keyword research tool that we (and others) have written about fondly in the past. Yahoo Clues will be shut down on April 1st. It was poorly named and was primarily positioned as a search trends product, but for SEOs it was an inter [...]

Burden Of Search UI Innovation Now Falls To Yahoo Veteran Laurie Mann

yahoo-y-logo Laurie Mann has been promoted to run Yahoo Search. Mann, who is a man, has been senior vice president of engineering operations at Yahoo since 2002. Prior to that Mann spent a number of years at Oracle in various engineering roles. The news was first reported late last night by AllThingsD. Mann fills the position that was previously held for approximately three years by Shashi Seth. Seth left Yahoo in January. He was charged with "innovating in search" on top of the Microsoft algorithm and search index. He presided over a period in which Yahoo saw its share of the US search market d [...]

Yahoo Announces Secure Search Partnership With AVG

yahoo-avg-search Yahoo and AVG announced a new partnership deal where Yahoo will power AVG's secure search, which will protect AVG's customers dangerous websites and online threats. The process uses AVG's LinkScanner technology to protect their users from malicious web sites. As we reported a couple of days ago, there was an 80% increase in the number of infected search results clicked on by users this holiday season. So the need for security in search is there. "AVG is excited to team up with Yahoo! to help provide Internet users with peace of mind when searching the web or accessing their favorite onli [...]

The rumors and expectations of this go back for years. Now the latest twist: Yahoo and Facebook will team up together.
