Over the weekend there was coverage of a seemingly new feature on Yahoo search: mobile-app search. However that actually launched in the US in the middle of last year. The recent coverage was triggered by the launch of the app-search capability in the UK, which is new. The UI has been improved somewhat since I last looked at it. AllThingsD reported late yesterday that PayPal president Scott Thompson would likely be named CEO of Yahoo. It's now official; Yahoo just put out its formal press release announcing Thompson's appointment. Yahoo is rolling out a couple new search experiences that are aimed squarely at holiday searchers: recipes and shopping. Microsoft announced they are now ready to move forward with transitioning over the search ad technology from Yahoo to Microsoft in the European regions. Microsoft said, the "European roll out is scheduled to begin with the UK, Ireland and France in the second quarter of 2012." Earlier tonight Danny Sullivan discovered that Siri will also search Bing and Yahoo, though it searches Google by default. If you say, "Search the web for . . ." or you ask Siri a question it can't answer it will search Google (the iPhone's default search engine).
