Yahoo announced they have appointed a new executive vice president of the Americas region. Levinsohn will report directly to CEO Carol Bartz and be responsible for company's media group, advertising sales, and partnerships for the Americas region. Back in the mid-to-late 1990s, the most powerful person in search was arguably Yahoo's Srinija Srinivasan. If Yahoo's was the "gateway" to the web in the way some think Google is today, Srinivasan was the chief gatekeeper. And now after 15 years, she's leaving Yahoo. Yahoo is laying off more people in its seemingly ever-shrinking search group. In addition to previous general Yahoo layoffs, many search executives and employees have left or are being moved to Microsoft as part of the Yahoo-Bing search integration. Yahoo’s Bartz Takes In $47 Million, Yang Gets One Dollar

paidContent reports on Yahoo's executives salaries for 2009. Yahoo's CEO, Carol Bartz earned $47 million in 2009, with a salary of $969,872 and $13 million in stock, almost $30 million in options, and some other earnings. Yahoo clarified that $42 million was not actually realized in the year and the amount Bartz will actually realize is based on meeting specific metrics. Meanwhile, Yahoo's co-founder and former CEO, Jerry Yang earned his customary $1 annual salary from the company. Yahoo has suffered attrition and a brain drain of top talent for the past couple of years. Google and Microsoft, in some cases, have been beneficiaries of those defections. TechCrunch has screen shots of Google AdWords ads targeting Joshua Schachter, a former well-known Yahoo employee, and leading to Yahoo's recruiting web site. Yahoo Compels Employees to Take Extended Holiday

According to the Wall Street Journal Yahoo is compelling most employees to take the week after Xmas off, using vacation or unpaid leave. It is also shutting down offices until after January 1. The move is an effort to save money. Yahoo employees over the past few years have been "encouraged" but until now not required to take the time off. According to Yahoo spokeswoman Dana Lengkeek "essential functions" will remain staffed during the period. Beyond "customer support" it's not clear what those roles are from the article. Yahoo engineers in France went on strike and protested yesterday over Carol Bartz wanting to close down the R&D center in Grenoble and ultimately putting 78 engineers out of work. Some of these protestors created a web site named Yahoo It Was You on a Google owned Blogspot, as a way to mock Yahoo's "Its You" campaign. Yahoo Readying For Bing Integration By “Identifying” Engineers Who Will Become Part Of Microsoft

According to a report on Wednesday, Yahoo is in the process of identifying as many as 400 engineers who may be headed to Microsoft after US government regulators do their anti-trust review and clear the companies' search deal. The formal agreement between the two companies closed at the end of last week. The 400 engineer transfer is part of the formal agreement between the two companies. Yahoo Board Member Icahn Trims Stake, Bartz Wants Wants To Stop “Navel Gazing”

Investor and Yahoo board member Carl Icahn has reportedly reduced his holdings in Yahoo by roughly 12 million shares, according to a recent regulatory filing with the US SEC. Icahn became a board member last year after a prolonged and very public episode that involved heavy criticism of then Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang and an attempt to oust the existing Yahoo board, including Yang, for blocking Microsoft's earlier takeover attempt. Doug Cutting Leaving Yahoo

Doug Cutting, creator of the Hadoop technology that powered Yahoo's search index, is leaving the company at the end of August for a position at Cloudera. While the immediate reaction is to assume this is related to the Yahoo-Microsoft deal, in which Microsoft would take over Yahoo's search engine, Cutting tells the New York Times that's not the case.
