August Search Market Share Grinds To Standstill, Though Google & Bing Grow In Volume

google-bing-yahoo-logos Today comScore released US search market share figures for August. I'm tempted to say, "Nothing to see here folks, move on." All the numbers are basically flat compared with July. There was almost no movement across sites; everybody's in the same position as last month. A year ago Google's share of the US search market was 66.4 percent. Microsoft controlled 15.9 percent and Yahoo had a 12.8 percent share. Yahoo essentially gave up share to partner Microsoft while Google has grown its share. Overall search volume is down slightly from July. However it's up about 2 billion queries i [...]

Over 19 Billion Searches In July, Google And Bing Both Up

google-bing-yahoo-logos Earlier today, comScore released July 2013 US search market share data. The figures reflect modest growth for Google, stasis for Bing and contraction for everyone else. Google bumped up slightly from last month to 67 percent market share, while Bing hovered just below 18 percent. Yahoo lost a tenth of a point, as did both Ask and AOL. Looking at the data from a year ago, Google's share has been largely flat: between 66.8 and 67 percent. Bing is up a little over 2 points, and the remaining trio are all down. Bing's share gains have come at the expense of partner Yahoo and the other t [...]

AltaVista Officially Closes — What Will Pawnee Do!

City of Pawnee - Official Site We mourned the closing of AltaVista when it was announced at the end of last month. But today's the day it actually closed. No more AltaVista. Gone. Perhaps no one will suffer as much as the inhabitants of Pawnee, Indiana. The fictional town from the TV show Parks & Recreation has mentioned AltaVista in various episodes over the years, perhaps giving the now-defunct search engine the most recognition in the Media Blitz episode from Season 3. Ben Wyatt's failure as a teenage mayor is revealed after local radio talkshow hosts Crazy Ira & The Douche bring him on the air, saying [...]

A Eulogy For AltaVista, The Google Of Its Time

altavista-faded-featured Goodbye AltaVista. You deserved better than this. Better than the one-sentence send-off Yahoo gave you today, when announcing your July 8 closure date. But then again, you always were the bright child neglected by your parents. The Amazing AltaVista You appeared on the search engine scene in December 1995. You made us go "woah" when you arrived. You did that by indexing around 20 million web pages, at a time when indexing 2 million web pages was considered to be big. Today, of course, pages get indexed in the billions, the tens of billions or more. But in 1995, 20 million was huge. Exis [...]

Yahoo To Shutter AltaVista, Axis & Several More Products

yahoo logo Out with the old. Out with the new. Yahoo's latest round of spring cleaning includes the shut down of one of the web's oldest search services (AltaVista) and one of the newest (Yahoo Axis), along with 10 other Yahoo products and services. Goodbye AltaVista Yahoo says AltaVista will be shutting down on July 8th. AltaVista launched way back in 1995, when you practically had to walk uphill in the snow -- both ways -- in order to find anything on the internet. It was the first full-text web search product and became a popular online destination. I remember it being scary good for that era. [...]

Yahoo Testing New Search Results Page

yahoo-y-logo I'm not sure anyone would notice in all of the Google Penguin news and discussion, but Yahoo appears to be testing a new search results page. I'm able to see the new interface when logged in and using Firefox, but I still see the old/current interface when using Safari and logged in to a different Yahoo account. Some other Search Engine Land editors are also seeing the new interface now. A Yahoo spokesperson gave us their boilerplate response when asked if this is just a test, or if it's rolling out now to all users. Yahoo! is continually developing and testing new product concepts in a [...]

Yahoo Wins $2.75 Billion Appeal In Yellow Pages Case

Yahoo legal Yahoo announced yesterday that it had prevailed in an appeal of a $2.75 judgment in Mexico obtained by former joint venture partners. Those former partners, Worldwide Directories and Ideas Interactivas, sued Yahoo for breach of contract and damages. The case arose from the termination of a contract between Yahoo de Mexico and Ideas Interactivas. In roughly 2002, the companies agreed to jointly produce online and print directories: "Yahoo! Paginas Utiles." The project was initially successful and the parties sought to expand the deal to other countries and regions, including Central America, [...]

Study: Delaware Least Likely State To Use Google, While Yahoo Is More Popular In Southern & Midwest States

us-map-bing-google-yahoo-featured Using data from more than 35 million search queries performed in 2012, SEO company WebpageFX  set out to determine search engine market share by state for Google, Bing and Yahoo. According to their study, Google dominates across the country, taking 70 percent or more of search engine market share in nearly all 50 states. Delaware represented the only state where Google won less than 70 percent of searches, with 69.49 percent market share. While Google won more than 80 percent of the market in many states, Hawaii, Oregon, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, and Colorado led in Googl [...]

yahoo-search-featured Just a day after the story broke that Yahoo wanted out of their deal with Microsoft, Yahoo's senior vice president of search Laurie Mann commented on new search tools and upgrades that are scheduled to launch over the coming months. According to an article in Bloomberg News, some of the planned upgrades are being created along with Microsoft. "We've got some really cool things in the pipeline, which we'll be announcing and rolling out over the coming months," said Mann. After playing a key role in establishing Google as the world's most popular search engine,  Marissa Mayer has been dri [...]

Yahoo Buys Mobile Startup With Big Search Chops

yahoo Earlier today Yahoo and Jybe announced that the latter was being acquired by the former. Jybe, which I had not heard of previously, is described by Yahoo as "a personalized recommendation company founded with the vision to help people find the things they love to do based on what’s trending in their social circles." It sounds like a "social search" or "social discovery" app. Indeed, all five Jybe team members are former search people -- and former Yahoo employees: As part of this acquisition, we’re welcoming an extremely talented group of engineers and data scientists who will join Ya [...]

Prior to that Mann spent a number of years at Oracle in various engineering roles. The news was first reported late last night by AllThingsD. Mann fills the position that was previously held for approximately three years by Shashi Seth. Seth left Yahoo in January. He was charged with "innovating in search" on top of the Microsoft algorithm and search index. He presided over a period in which Yahoo saw its share of the US search market d [...]

The rumors and expectations of this go back for years. Now the latest twist: Yahoo and Facebook will team up together. Yahoo Bringing Election Results To Search Results

yahoo-y-logo Tuesday is election day in the U.S. and, by almost all accounts, the presidential race between President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney will be tight. No doubt many other races across the country will be equally close, and Yahoo will let searchers track results right in its search results pages. Some of Yahoo's "direct display" results (Yahoo has previously called these "shortcuts," as I recall) are already in place. You can see, for example, some current polling data on searches like [swing state polls] and [2012 presidential polls]. As you'd expect, searches related to the p [...]

Mayer: Yahoo Not Planning To Invest In Local Search Right Now

yahoo-local-map-featured Search is a "core priority" at Yahoo, but the company isn't planning any significant investments in local search in the near future. That's some of what new CEO Marissa Mayer revealed today in her first earnings call since she joined the company this summer. Mayer spoke several times about Yahoo and search in general, saying it's one of the "core daily habits" of Yahoo users -- a fact that makes search one of her core priorities as CEO. But that future focus on search won't apparently include Yahoo's local search products. Why? Because local search is, proverbially speaking, a tough n [...]
