Yahoo’s Re-Organization: Search Stays Alive, At Least On Paper

Following last week's layoffs of about 2,000 employees, new Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson announced today an overhaul of the company's structure -- and, despite concerns about the future of Yahoo search, it remains alive. At least in the memo that Thompson sent to Yahoo employees this morning. Yahoo's new corporate structure will take effect on May 1st and have three primary divisions: Consumer - this will have three units: Media, Connections and Commerce Regions - this is the division that serves Yahoo advertisers and is "accountable for all Yahoo revenue" Technology - the infrastructure [...]

Yahoo In A Fight For Its Life

According to Reuters on Tuesday next week the already embattled new Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson will lay out his vision for the company. The pressure will be on to deliver a coherent and convincing plan -- emphasis on convincing. Following the announcement of 2,000 layoffs earlier this week Thompson sought to reassure Yahoo employees in a company memo. A streamlined organizational structure will better enable Yahoo to compete in the future, he reportedly said. That new structure will apparently not include Yahoo Chief Product Officer Blake Irving, who has resigned. His organization took a d [...]

Yahoo Confirms 2,000 Employees Getting the Axe

After several days of rumors, first reported by AllThingsD, Yahoo confirmed this morning that it's restructuring and laying off 2,000 employees: Today, the company will begin the process of informing employees about these changes. As part of that effort, approximately 2,000 people will be notified of job elimination or phased transition. Yahoo! expects to realize approximately $375 million of annualized savings upon completion of all employee transitions. The company currently expects to recognize the majority of an estimated $125 to $145 million pretax cash charge relating to employee sev [...]

Will Pending Layoffs Put Final Nail In Yahoo Search?

Whatever is left of Yahoo Search -- and, frankly, that's unclear at this point -- might be gone completely within the next couple of weeks. At AllThingsD today, Kara Swisher is reporting that Yahoo is planning substantial layoffs as early as next week, with a company restructuring to be revealed the week after that. Swisher, who's been correct on things like this in the past, mentions "a half-dozen sources" in reporting on Yahoo's impending plans. Of note for Search Engine Land readers is the discussion of what might happen to Yahoo Search. AllThingsD says that Yahoo has been in talks wi [...]

The comScore February search market share numbers are being exposed by the various financial and investment firms this evening. Bing continued to gain, while its partner Yahoo lost market share. Google was up compared to January and year over year. Keeping in mind this isn't yet the official comScore release, the following are the numbers for February: Google: 66.4 percent (vs. 65.4 percent a year ago) Bing:  15.3 percent (vs. 13.6 percent a year ago) Yahoo: 13.8 percent (vs. 16.1 percent a year ago) Ask: 3 percent (vs. 3.2 percent a year ago) AOL: 1.5 percent (vs. 1.7 percent [...]

Yahoo Working On Search Across Devices

After handing over its core search results to Bing in the summer of 2010, Yahoo promised that it would continue to try new things related to its search interface. One of those new ideas is a feature that would let Yahoo users begin a search on one device -- a desktop computer, for example -- and continue to use/interact with the search on a different device, like a tablet or laptop computer. In an interview with MediaPost, Shashi Seth, Yahoo's Senior VP of Search and Marketplaces, explains this search-across-devices idea. Here's how MediaPost describes it: Yahoo has begun to test th [...]

Yahoo Launches Mobile-App Search (For PCs) In The UK

Over the weekend there was coverage of a seemingly new feature on Yahoo search: mobile-app search. However that actually launched in the US in the middle of last year. The recent coverage was triggered by the launch of the app-search capability in the UK, which is new. The UI has been improved somewhat since I last looked at it. As an app search tool it's quite nice. Neither Google nor Bing offer anything comparable in their main search engines. Of course users can search directly for Android apps in the Android Market. Somewhat ironically one of the mobile apps that Yahoo discontinu [...]

It’s Official: PayPal President Scott Thompson The New Yahoo CEO

AllThingsD reported late yesterday that PayPal president Scott Thompson would likely be named CEO of Yahoo. It's now official; Yahoo just put out its formal press release announcing Thompson's appointment. In appointing Thompson, Yahoo is choosing a leader with a deeper technology and product background than prior CEO Carol Bartz who was abruptly terminated last September. In the interim Yahoo CFO Tim Morse has been serving as CEO. Not going to sell itself now There had been an expectation that Yahoo was going to sell itself or a significant minority stake to a private equity buyer or ano [...]

With Holidays Near, Yahoo Upgrades Its Shopping & Recipe Search Results

Yahoo is rolling out a couple new search experiences that are aimed squarely at holiday searchers: recipes and shopping. Prior to tonight's new display, a search for "apple recipes" would include the standard algorithmic results (i.e., 10 blue links) along with a small shortcut at the top of the search results pointing searchers to recipes on shine.yahoo.com, Yahoo's lifestyle content site for women. Now, the Yahoo.com search results offer a much richer experience. The new content includes (1) a slider with top-rated recipes from AllRecipes.com and other sources; (2) a Filter by [...]

Yahoo & Microsoft Proceeds With Search Ad Transition In 2012

Microsoft announced they are now ready to move forward with transitioning over the search ad technology from Yahoo to Microsoft in the European regions. Microsoft said, the "European roll out is scheduled to begin with the UK, Ireland and France in the second quarter of 2012." Yahoo and Microsoft have already transitioned the search ad technology in the U.S. and Canada, as well as some other regions. But the transition scheduled slowed as revenue figures did not meet estimates and advertiser expectations were poor. Yahoo and Microsoft has completed the organic transition less than a [...]

Not Just Google: Siri Searches Bing And Yahoo Too

Earlier tonight Danny Sullivan discovered that Siri will also search Bing and Yahoo, though it searches Google by default. If you say, "Search the web for . . ." or you ask Siri a question it can't answer it will search Google (the iPhone's default search engine). But if you say, "Search Bing for Steve Ballmer News" or "Search Bing for weather" or "Search Bing for Search Engine Land" you get the following: The same is true for Yahoo. If you say, "Search Yahoo for Wilson Phillips" or "Search Yahoo for Google Earnings" you see these results: Who knew? Well, if you launch Siri, clic [...]

Yahoo Completes Global Organic Transition To Bing (Except Korea)

Twenty months later, Yahoo and Bing have announced the completion of the organic (algorithmic) transition from Yahoo powered search results to Bing powered search results globally, with the exception of Korea. If you do a search on any Yahoo powered site via your desktop or mobile device, with the exception from within Korea, the search results will be powered by Bing. Why not Korea? Because there is a three-way migration for that between Yahoo, Microsoft and Daum. They expect this transition to be completed by the end of the year. The first Yahoo portal to be switched over was U.S. a [...]

Yahoo Favors Its Own Download Site, Then Offers Yahoo Toolbar Download, Too

While the US government accuses Google of, in part, favoring its own properties in search results, Yahoo appears to be doing the same thing on download-related searches. And, in the process of offering downloads of popular software, Yahoo is also offering searchers additional downloads including the Yahoo Toolbar. This was first spotted by GFI Labs, which showed how certain download-related searches always presented Yahoo's download site, downloads.yahoo.com, at the top of the results page, ahead of the official website. That alone isn't unusual. Google and Bing both often show their [...]

Yahoo Asia & More European Properties Transitioned To Bing Powered Results

The Yahoo Search Blog announced they have transitioned much of their Asian algorithmic search to be powered by Bing with the exception of Korea. Specifically, Asian Yahoo search users in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam will now get Bing powered results. In addition, they also migrated over more European countries such as Greece, Poland, Romania, Switzerland (German, French and Italian languages) and Turkey. In addition to the transition of Yahoo UK to Bing back in August, which included Yahoo UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. Ya [...]

Yahoo Rolls Out New SERP, Will People Notice?

In the wake of the firing of Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz and amid the growing speculation surrounding a possible sale of the company, work continues for the Yahoo rank and file. (The employees must have a kind of PTSD.) But in the spirit of "life goes on," Yahoo search engineers announced that the company is introducing improved SERPs. The offer a somewhat cleaner design, with tabs showing related content and navigational filters that allow sorting by date and related searches. All the changes discussed in the Yahoo Blog post aren't live for me but they appear to be generally incremental o [...]

Bing Webmaster Tools Integrates Yahoo Traffic Data

Bing Webmaster Tools now has fully integrated in Yahoo's traffic numbers as well. So if you have seen a spike in your Bing Webmaster Tools traffic charts, this is the reason why. You should see your impressions and clicks data spike up, while the click through rate numbers may fluctuate from the norm as well. Since Bing now fully powering Yahoo search's organic results, virtually in most geographic locations now, Bing has decided to integrate their data in the tool. There are many webmasters who would love an option to filter this data by search provider, i.e. see Bing vs Yahoo [...]

After Weak Q2 Time May Be Running Out For Yahoo’s Bartz

She was supposed to help turn around the company, but Yahoo's CEO Carol Bartz may soon be the one in turnaround because of another mixed or mediocre quarter. The search alliance and revenue share with Microsoft was partly blamed for Q2 revenues being down compared the same period last year: Revenue excluding traffic acquisition costs ("revenue ex-TAC") was $1,076 million for the second quarter of 2011, a 5 percent decrease from the second quarter of 2010, primarily due to the revenue share related to the Search Agreement with Microsoft . . . GAAP revenue was $1,229 million for the second quar [...]

Yahoo Builds App Search For PC, AppSpot For iPhone, Android

Shashi Seth, SVP of Search & Marketplaces at Yahoo believes that mobile apps are like websites in the early days of the internet and will only continue to multiply just as websites have done -- seemingly exponentially. Regardless of whether the analogy is 100 percent accurate everyone agrees that app discovery has become a big problem. Among other things, it has given rise to an Amazon app store and several independent app-discovery sites like Chomp. Mobile (and increasingly desktop) apps are are an important new content category that Seth believes must be addressed by search. According [...]
