Google, MSFT, Yahoo In Talks To Buy Hulu: Report

Hulu is apparently a popular dance partner at the moment. The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are all in "confidential" discussions about buying the popular video service. YouTube remains the dominant video site online, but it's built around user-generated, amateur videos. Hulu, on the other hand, has agreements with major TV networks that gives it access to current (and professional) programming -- an area that YouTube has been trying to beef up for a few years now. That kind of programming is what attracts ad dollars, as the Times report explains: Hulu' [...]

From Apple To Google TV: A Quick Overview Of Six “Connected TV” Offerings

While many people are focused on the recent launch of Google TV, there are a range of existing alternatives for people who want more than just TV on their TVs -- or who may what to "cut the (cable) cord" entirely. The chart below offers a short overview and comparison of the major providers and systems available in the US market. It is not intended to be definitive or exhaustive. Each product or system below requires some sort of new hardware, either a set-top box or a entirely new TV. Prices range from a low of $59 for the cheapest Roku box to well over $1,000 for the largest Sony Internet [...]

Yahoo Returns To No. 2 Video Site, Ahead Of Facebook

Facebook's tenure as the number two video site in the U.S. was short-lived. According to the latest comScore video rankings, Yahoo returned to second place in September after Facebook held the spot in August. Here's the chart for September: Video viewing overall was down slightly in September in the U.S. [...]

Facebook Tops Yahoo As No. 2 Video Site

There's no drama or news when talking about the most popular video site on the web; that battle was won long ago by YouTube and doesn't seem likely to change anytime. But after that, the landscape changes a bit. Hulu and VEVO seemed like they might be on the rise, but now it's Facebook that's surpassed Yahoo to become the second-most popular video site online. Here's the latest chart from comScore, covering online video rankings for August, 2010. ComScore says that 178 million U.S. internet users watched online video in August, and averaged 14.3 hours per viewer. [...]

Yahoo Redesigns Image & Video Search Pages To Show Trending Results

Yahoo announced they have redesigned the home page for Yahoo Image Search and Yahoo Video Search to include trending search results. The new pages are no longer dull looking, they show up to "five pages of topics that are trending in search," in a sleek black background. You can scroll through the pages manually or turn on the autoscroll feature. As part of this announcement, Yahoo keeps pushing the "engagement" metric saying: Already, we’ve seen double-digit percentage increases in engagement for both image and video search since launching these new homepages, with a 60% increase [...]

Yahoo Goes Hollywood With New Video Search Refiners

Building on its previous travel and music search refinements, Yahoo has now announced new refinements for TV shows and actors. The new feature acts similarly to what Yahoo's done in the other verticals. Now, when using Yahoo Video Search to find TV shows, searchers will get a series of refinements in the left-side column that offer deeper searches for specific characters, popular episodes, and seasons. Here's the screenshot of a search for How I Met Your Mother: The second refiner deals with searches for popular film actors. The video results page will now show links to clips from an [...]

Yahoo Helps Music Lovers Find Videos More Easily

Yahoo has added a set of refinements to its video search engine that will help music lovers find videos more quickly. A video search for [U2] shows the new refinements in action: On the left side of the screen are new options to drill down to see U2 videos related to specific albums or specific songs. You can click any album or song to see the video results that match the refinement without losing the context of your original search. It looks and works similar to the travel photo tours refinement that Yahoo added to image search earlier this year. One more note: on the image abov [...]

Yahoo Upgrades Mobile Homepage

Yesterday at the CTIA mobile conference, Yahoo Mobile SVP David Ko announced a range of upgrades to its mobile homepage. The new homepage was launched this past April. According to the statement that Yahoo put out yesterday, the homepage has been optimized for 1,900 devices. Video is also a bigger part of the experience now on smartphones. Changes and upgrades for smartphones include the following: Dynamically updated content with pagination – without using additional screen real estate or refreshing, users are able to access a wealth of content. For example, the ‘Tod [...]

Yahoo Serves 5 Million Streams Of Michael Jackson Memorial, Most In Yahoo History

Our love affair with celebrity continues, as evidenced by news today from Yahoo that it served about five million streams of the Michael Jackson Memorial ceremony. That makes it the most streamed event in Yahoo's history, surpassing the inauguration of President Obama in January, when Yahoo served 1.8 million streams. While watching the event online, many viewers were also searching for information about the people involved. People not watching a live stream were looking for videos of what they missed. Yahoo says it saw spikes in searches for Elvis Presley's funeral the casket compan [...]

Google Still Owns Online Video, But Hulu Is Rising

Google remains the dominant player in the online video space, but Hulu is on the rise. It's now the number three video property according to the latest comScore numbers out today. According to comScore, Hulu has passed Yahoo properties and moved into the third spot with 2.6% of all videos viewed during March. Yahoo dropped to fourth with 2.3 million videos watched on its sites. Google properties (primarily YouTube) are still miles ahead of the competition with almost 41% of all videos viewed during the month. ComScore estimates that almost 150 million Internet users watched an averag [...]

Yahoo Shutting Down Jumpcut Video Service

After disabling new uploads in December, Yahoo will formally kill off Jumpcut in June. More than just a video upload-and-watch site, Jumpcut allowed users to share videos and photos, creating essentially a library of "stock" clips and images that any user could include in his/her own videos. It also offered online video creation and editing tools. Jumpcut was a somewhat novel concept that apparently didn't catch on enough -- at least not enough to survive CEO Carol Bartz's promise to reorganize and refocus the company. TechCrunch has posted the email sent out to Jumpcut users with news o [...]

YouTube Continues To Dominate Growing Video Landscape

Google continues to dominate the online video market in much the same way it dominates search. Google properties set a record in October with more than 100 million video viewers -- 99.5 million of whom watched videos on YouTube. Those are some of the numbers issued this afternoon by comScore from its Video Metrix service. Google's video market share represents more than two-thirds of the estimated online video watching audience for the month. As the chart below shows, Fox Interactive and Yahoo ranked second and third, respectively, in audience share. As you'd expect, YouTube also dom [...]

Branding Coming To Search In A Big Way

Search has historically been seen as a direct response vehicle and the notion that search is a branding medium has traditionally been met with considerable skepticism by search marketers, albeit somewhat less recently. In an effort to be provocative in moderating the "branding and search" panel at SMX West last month, I said, "Search is much more a branding medium than anything else." When I asked how many people agreed in the audience, only a few hands went up. James Lamberti of comScore then presented evidence to argue that search was in fact a powerful branding medium because of its reach, [...]

Despite Takeover Turmoil, Yahoo Not Rolling Over & Playing Dead

A curious thing is happening: Yahoo seems to be executing in the midst of the chaos of uncertainty surrounding its future. Speaking at an IAB event yesterday, Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang [...]

The improvements include: A wider, 16:9, video player Additional content including music, movies, TV, news, sports, and more The max file size is now 150 megabytes (Google and YouTube are 100MB, I believe) Added networks, playlists, and related videos to your selected video You can now share playlists by embeddable playlists under your embeddable video; an example can be seen over here More detailed profile pages For a full list of changes, see the Yahoo Video Blog announcement. [...]

Yahoo Live Launches – Online Video, Um, Live

Techmeme is all abuzz with news of the Yahoo Live launch. I'm thinking Yahoo's doing online video? Again? But weren't they closing Yahoo Video? No, that was Yahoo Podcasts -- it's hard to keep track of the closures. But still, what's special about Live? Then I hit the official Yahoo blog post about it and it all became clear (and potentially cool). Yahoo Live lets you broadcast live video. From [...]

Yahoo Does Deals With Cars.com, CNBC, Renews Deal With InfoSpace

Yahoo Autos has swapped out previous partner, AutoTrader, and replaced it with a broader editorial content and listings deal from newspaper-owned Cars.com. It's unclear whether Yahoo's embrace of the newspaper industry had anything to do with the deal. But it promises more content and listings on the site and apparently "marks the first time new car listings will be available on Yahoo Autos." Separately, Yahoo said that it will begin offering news and video content from CNBC.com. The relationship attempts to keep Yahoo's popular finance site a step ahead of new and improved rivals like AOL [...]

Yahoo To Host Web Only US Presidential Debate

Yahoo! to stream web-only US Prez debate from The Register reports that Yahoo will be airing a web-only U.S. presidential debate soon. Yes, Google did something like this recently with YouTube and the Democratic debate. But Google's version was not exclusive to online only, Yahoo's is. Charlie Rose, of PBS, will be hosting the debate, and questions will be taken in real-time. [...]
