All my sites were impacted, most of them favorably though so I was quite happy. And yes, definitely an update no matter what Google says. All the writers on Examiner, one of the garbage content farms I used to write for, are now complaining their page views are in the toilet :)

Don’t believe anything Google says. DO Evil has been their motto for years, which is why I now always use Yahoo or Bing for search. Wouldn’t touch Google with a 10 foot.

  • http://autospace.co/ Aditya Pandey

    I completely agree with you.
My site is heavily affected, impression goes down to 1000-1500.. :(

I hope we can get what’s exact reason that they down ranked our site.

Impact can due to lot of reasons not only updates. You need to look at what the reason may be and then find the solution.

  • Juggernart Games

Sorry to say, but according to my stats Google either lies or they don’t know themself what happened. But there definately happened something around Dec. 11/12/13. I can see it clearly in the stats of two of my sites.

  • Brandon Lobo

Well, from my stats traffic dropped by 50% on that day… It’s climbed back up a bit to around 75% or so now. But, my main keywords still rank the same, could it be some other factor? My Google traffic is what crashed, so it has to be something with Google – but no idea as to what it could be.

It’s probably one of those 200 algorithm changes they keep referring to… :)

  • http://twitter.com/marcusbowlerhat Marcus Miller

Maybe, just maybe, the algorithm has become self aware and is now issuing it’s own updates in some kind of scary, Skynet / Wargames turn of events.

Good Evening Eric Schmidt – Would you like to play a game (with peoples livelihoods).

Oh, wait. These trusted sources for Algo ‘weather’ changes were not right? *gasp*.

  • daveintheuk

Well that MUST be the case then. I cannot think of a single case of Google lying or omitting the truth ever.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ashley.jenner Ashley Jenner

I saw exactly the same, 50% Drop in one day. My main keywords still take #1 but lost a lot of residual page serps. 100% it was google traffic that dropped. Mine has crawled back up again, mainly to do with changes to combat the drop.

  • Michelle Murphy

Perhaps a Google newbie unintentionally done something and
    isn’t fessing up to it!?!

    Hi Barry,

May I suggest another SERPS Weather Tool (Made In France) http://www.ranks.fr/fr/serpometre

This one did indicate something happening… friday

If it’s not an update, then it must be a test – and maybe even a series of tests.

And it might be one that’s lasting longer than we’re used to. It all makes sense (swap it a bit, see if it’s giving users a better experience, swap it back, swap here swap there, and hence the chaos).

However, as always, take things Google says with a grain of salt. Case in point – Google used to be the ones who claimed paid placement was evil – and now it’s pay to play for many eCommerce websites.

Its skynet, I though the terminator movies where to good to be made up lol

But we have seen a lot of ranking improvements over the past week and looking at keywords tracking from Thursday, I can see a lot of our clients keywords have moved up the SERPs quite a bit since then.

So maybe we are seeing google change to skynet (that would be a great name for a google update lol) or maybe, just maybe google telling us porkies, or another options is googles doing some testing to bring an update out just as we all finish for the Christmas and new year holidays!

I hope the last one is just me joking and google aren’t that evil to us all!

  • http://twitter.com/incrediblehelp Jaan Kanellis

Interesting to hear some of you see traffic drops, but keyword ranking the same. Maybe some changes to personalization and/or localization.

  • http://www.linkworxseo.com/ Link Worx Seo

Actually noticed an increase after the update. Had not seen any official release information but it sure made an impact. Saw jumps from page two back to page one or full page jumps for several pages. Was a plus to see this happen, but surely not everyone benefited from it. I just see it this way, if you are doing what is right for SEO then you really should not have any concerns. But making sure you keep up to date with changes is extremely important and not some Sky Net movie thing, Although that is funny…

  • daveintheuk

Remember when Google “accidentally” hoovered up tons of unencrypted wifi data with their fleets of StreetView cars around – they said that was an accident and caused by one rogue engineer… so they clearly have very sloppy release management – perhaps a rogue engineer made a change and didn’t tell anyone.

Oh wait, I just remembered, they finally admitted months later than loads of people know and it had been signed off.

  • http://twitter.com/kernmedia Dan Kern

Yep, ever since Google Shopping became pay to play, it seems eCommerce sites have been getting targeted via the Panda updates (cross-domain duplicate content from dupe product descriptions being a big focus).

I noticed something big on Sunday. so something is up.

Same with my start-up site. It went from being on page 2 to now nowhere to be found… Hmmm?

Its funny that everytime google says that they didnt do any update and every time the admit it around 2-3 weeks later…

  • Brian Warner

We noticed a drip that began Friday morning and recovered by Sunday. I firmly believe the dip was caused by the Sandy Hook shooting. The entire nation was distracted by the tragedy and not in the mood to look at the web casually. No panda update, just a grieving country.

  • Durant Imboden

Our Google referrals and traffic are off compared to the same time last month, but I’ve witnessed traffic troughs between U.S. Thanksgiving and Christmas every year since 1997. If an unnamed Google update is having an effect on our site (either good or bad), the effect is being masked by the usual pre-Christmas lull.

I think this will be a simple case of Google coming clean at a later date. sigh

I actually saw an improvement in EMD penalty… Perhaps this “update” also includes that?

  • Tim Koster

Yes it was a Panda update. Here’s my perspective.

We were ranked #1 for public records, #1 for free public records and in the top 3 for public records for all states and most counties since 1999 (the result of a lot of hard work, a free site, and continual improvements). We are still ranked #1 for public records, but on June 11, 2011 we went from #1 to #6 for free public records, #1 to #15 (later to 82) for Canada public records, #3 to #52 for California, #3 to 180 for Florida, #2 to 9, New Jersey #3 to 39, Arizona #6 to 105, etc. etc. We worked for 18 months to find and fix any possible cause, and October 29th, 2012 our rankings went almost exactly back to or above what they were before Panda for all of our keywords. Then on December 11th, 2012 they all dropped back to or below where they were prior to Oct. 29th (e.g. free public records went form 6 to 1 to 6, California went up to 3 then down to 103, Arizona up to five and then down to 107, Canada up to #2 then down to not being in the top 200). Daily traffic reflected the rankings. Huge drop in June of 2011, big increase back to pre-panda on October 29th, and then huge drop to the lowest point since 1998 on December 11th.

Prior to October 29th we made some significant changes to eliminate duplicate content (e.g. we suspended thousands of ‘Code of Ordinance’ links). But we made no significant changes to the site after that and are completely befuddled as to why we were hit again.

If this isn’t Panda, then what is it? The only answer may be is that they simply want us off of the Internet.

  • Mike Boulton

WOW wingnut are you nostradamus? My serps fell dramatically today. Also it is supposed to be the end of the world today as it is the end of the long count mayan calendar. Maybe the new update will be called “long count”. Either way it is not helping. On another note. I created an amazon affiliate site 6 weeks ago to use as testing. I brought the EMD domain and added 5 0r 6 pages to it in a day. I was going for 4 keywords and blasted all 4 keywords with about 2000 links within the space of 4 days. I tried to do everything anti google. All keywords ranked on the first page within 2 weeks and have not moved since. You just can’t win with Google
