Based on an analysis of millions of mobile search impressions from its ad network, the company found that “Clothing and Restaurants make up the lion’s share of mobile coupon searches.” The study was conducted the first week of September.

The two categories represented 50.2 percent of all mobile coupon searches seen by Chitika. Clothing lead restaurants slightly, followed by more general “retail” and “arts & crafts.” These top four categories together constituted 80 percent of all mobile coupon-related searches during the study period.

Restaurants is the top local-mobile search category and has been for several years. And mobile users love coupons, which continues to be a preferred form of mobile advertising. So these results make sense. Clothing-related coupon searches could be driven by in-store shopping queries.

In order to ensure that it was counting only coupon-related searches and not general search queries, Chitika said that it only considered “mobile search impressions whose intent could reasonably be related to coupons.”
