Today’s Google logo marks the 44th celebration of Earth Day. In honor of this day devoted to environmental policies, Google has created an interactive logo, depicting six animals from across the globe.

Each of the animated illustrations includes a link to share the image of the animal on Google+, Facebook or Twitter, as well as a search icon to learn more information about each creature. A replay button switches from one illustration to the next.

The first image is of the Rufous Hummingbird, a migratory bird that is known to travel more than 2,000 miles through the Rocky Mountains and down into Mexico. Also included in the logo is a Veiled Chameleon, a reptile indigenous to Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia:

Established in 1970, Earth Day is often defined as the birth of the modern day environmental movement, and credited with helping move forward legislation like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act.

While originally proposed by peace activist John McConnell in San Francisco, Earth Day is now celebrated on a global scale.
