Fans watching the final few moments of the Super Bowl last weekend set a new record for Tweets-per-second (TPS) for a sporting event: 4,064 Tweets were sent at 10:07:16 p.m. EST, according to Twitter.

The previous TPS record, of 3,283, was set during Japan’s 3-1 win over Denmark during the World Cup soccer tournament last summer. In fact, the Super Bowl was so much more popular for Tweets that the World Cup record was surpassed six times over the course of the game. Early touchdowns by the teams and the halftime show were the inspirations for these spikes.

The all-time TPS peak wasn’t sporting-event related, coming just after midnight in Japan on New Year’s Eve/Day.

Interestingly, the most Tweeted-about subjects weren’t the game or the players. Twitter says musician Usher was the most talked-about person during the Super Bowl, with his appearance during the halftime show performance, plus further talk about him, winning him the title. The Black Eyed Peas were next most discussed, with Slash, Eminem and Christina Aguilera following behind. The most mentioned player, Aaron Rodgers, came in sixth.

Among brands who bought Super Bowl commercials, Doritos’ “Pug Attack” spot was the most talked-about. Audi and Pepsi came in second and third, followed by Chevy, Coca-Cola and Groupon.
