Thailand Taking YouTube To Court Over Insulting Video

Remember that case where YouTube was hosting a video many Thais felt was insulting to their king? Thought it was all resolved? Think again. The Thai government plans to go after Google in court.

Most stories I’ve seen so far talk about Google getting sued, but the AP reports this move might be a criminal action:

Sitthichai Phokai-udom, the minister of information and communications technology, told The Associated Press that a suit would be lodged with a Thai court next week on charges of lese majeste, or offense against the monarchy, which is a crime in Thailand.

"Thailand is a fairly small country and not the economic or military powerhouse, so we are at the mercy of the greedy businessman in America," he said.

From Asia-Pacific News, more that it will be alleged Google lied about what it could do to stop the video:

CT Minister Sitthichai Pookyaudom said he will proceed with the court case against the Google-owned website on the grounds that it had lied about not being able to stop a video clip that ran on YouTube last month that ridiculed Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who will celebrate his 80th birthday this year.
